The director of communications and advocacy in the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, Taungana Ndoro, said that the revised school curriculum will have six learning areas at primary level and five compulsory learning areas from Form 1 to Form 4.
Ndoro said for Forms 5 and 6, schoolchildren are to continue to study strictly three learning areas.
Last month, Cabinet approved a framework to revamp the education curriculum, whose thrust is on imparting digital skills and modern research techniques critical for the 21st century to learners.
The unpopular continuous assessment learning activities (CALAs) will be replaced with the new school-based projects of practical applications system.
Speaking to <a href="https://www.sundaymail.co.zw/revised-curriculum-will-enhance-quality-education-delivery">The Sunday Mail</a>, Ndoro said the revised curriculum will reduce the burden on primary school learners while maintaining the quality and relevance of learning content. Said Ndoro:

It was rationalisation that identifies the following six learning areas at primary level: Indigenous language; English language; Mathematics; Science and Technology; Physical Education and Arts; and Social Sciences.
At secondary school level, there will be five compulsory learning areas for Forms One to Four: Mathematics; English language; Indigenous language and Literature; Combined Science; and Heritage Studies.
There will be three elective learning areas from the following categories: sciences; languages; humanities; commercials; technical and vocational; and physical education and arts.
The recommended number of learning areas for study for a Form One to Four learner is eight.
For Forms Five and Six, schoolchildren are to continue to study strictly three learning areas.
The learning experience is made more focused for our learners.
This curriculum framework has rationalised the infant and junior school curriculum from the previous eight subjects into six learning areas.
This rationalisation was achieved through the elimination of duplication and overlaps and shifting of other concepts to next-grade levels and to other learning areas.
The process of rationalisation will see a review of syllabuses to factor in the changes in the framework.
The net effect should not overload primary school learners with both content and language learning materials in the bags and at the same time maintain quality and relevance of learning content.
Each learning area is allocated learning hours to avoid overload.
The rationalisation identifies the following six learning areas, which constitute the curriculum at infant school level: Indigenous language; English language; Mathematics; Science and Technology; Physical Education and Arts; and Social Sciences.
At secondary school, we have also reduced a number of compulsory learning areas to five so that we allow learners to choose learning areas that align with their desires and strengths and to focus on only essential learning areas.

Ndoro said the Government will provide teachers with resources and training to support the effective implementation of the heritage-based curriculum.
He also said the 2024 examination candidates for Grade Seven, Form Four and Form Six will continue with CALAs as before.
They are expected to complete the last two CALAs per learning area for 2024.

Revised Schools Curriculum To Reduce Burden On Primary School Learners - Ndoro

Teachers’ unions have expressed mixed views on the proposed Heritage-Based Education 2024-30 Curriculum.
Under the Heritage-Based Education 2024-30 Curriculum Framework, learning the History of Zimbabwe will become compulsory, and national shrines, cultural heritage sites and the national pledge will be accorded special emphasis.
Speaking to <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200023934/new-curriculum-divides-teachers">NewsDay</a>, Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) president Obert Masaraure said the current history being taught in schools is flawed. He said:
<blockquote>
We, however, take exception to the issue of emphasising the learning of a flawed history of Zimbabwe. The current history was written to simply praise those who assumed power in 1980.
The true history of Zimbabwe, including the important roles of ZAU, Ndabaningi Sithole and all liberation war heroes should be taught.
The missteps of the ruling party and violations of human rights post-independence, including Gukurahundi, must be taught in our schools.
The heroic sacrifices of people like Morgan Tsvangirayi towards producing the current Constitution must be part of the taught history.
History should not be a eulogy of ZAPU PF, but a detailed account of our past to inform our future endeavours…
Funding of these good intentions is also important. The Treasury has shown a stinking austerity attitude which is not in line with realising these big promises.
</blockquote>
Educators Union of Zimbabwe secretary-general Tapedza Zhou said the Government has to explain how the proposed curriculum differs from the previous one and how education will be funded to ensure a smooth implementation of the framework. He said:
<blockquote>
Does the New Heritage-based curriculum differ from the previous one which was competence-based, what are the areas of continuity and change?
How does the minister intend to overcome the resource question given that the previous curriculum was paralysed due to failure to address this question?
One critical error made, therefore, is to rely on local resources in bankrolling the New Curriculum despite the bankruptcy of the teachers, learners and parents.
Another Concern is to have both teachers and learners being forced to endure a huge curriculum shift each time an education minister is changed.
</blockquote>
However, Zimbabwe Teachers’ Association (ZIMTA) spokesperson Goodwill Taderera said the proposed curriculum was a welcome development. He said:
<blockquote>
As ZIMTA we submitted a paper to the Education minister to the effect that almost everything had to be revised, particularly the CALA which was hovering around 30% and the number of learning areas which we thought needed to be reduced.
We are yet to study the proposed new curriculum, but it is a welcome development. We hear that they have now made it a Heritage-Based curriculum and that they have reduced from the primary sector about 11 subjects to 6 and from the secondary 7 to 5 and we think this is a welcome development.
</blockquote>
Under the the proposed Heritage-Based Education 2024-2030 curriculum framework, the infant level (ECD A to Grade 2), learning areas are being reduced from the previous eleven to six. The reduction will also apply at Junior Level (Grades 3 to 7).
At secondary school level, the core and compulsory learning areas are being reduced from seven to five.

Heritage-Based Education Curriculum Divides Teachers

Some Zimbabwean learners who are now doing Ordinary Level are still unable to read and write.
This was said by Cyprian Masocha, who is the chief director for curriculum development and technical services in the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/some-form-3-students-illiterate-says-ministry-official/">reported ZimLive</a>.
Masocha made the revelations when he recently appeared before parliament’s portfolio committee on primary and secondary education.
He said some of the weaknesses of Zimbabwe’s education system could be cured by the Continuous Learning Assessment Activities (CALA), which is being resisted by some teachers and parents. Masocha said:
<blockquote>
The problem that we have is that our education has not been all that efficient and effective as much as we would need.
That’s why you find that in infant education, we are now putting more emphasis on foundational skills where our learners should be able to read and write as they finish their Grade 2.
When they enter our junior education (Grade 3) they should be able to write.
</blockquote>
Masocha conceded some learners were facing challenges with CALA because of their inability to read and write. He said:
<blockquote>
That’s why you find parents complaining that ‘we are doing the CALA for our children’.
In most cases, it’s because those pupils are unable to read and write at Grade 6; unable to read and write at Form 3.
That’s why we have come back to you to say assist us so that we improve our curriculum to make sure that they are able to read and write.
Once they are able to read and write, the burden on us as parents doing the work for them is lessened.
</blockquote>
He appealed to lawmakers for their support for the implementation of the competence-based curriculum.
CALA is a student continuous assessment method that was set to be implemented for the November 2021 session of the Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) examinations.
CALA includes learning activities, projects or assessment that require learners to perform, demonstrate their knowledge, understanding and proficiency.

Some Form 3 Pupils Cannot Read And Write, Says Ministry Of Education Official

Cabinet last week approved a two-pronged teaching approach aimed at profit-making and academic excellence in schools.
This will be done through the commercialisation of practical subjects in schools through fostering joint ventures with private investors.
Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa said:
<blockquote>The Ministry (of Primary and Secondary Education) will promote commercial ventures in schools through the use of land and space available to schools.
The public schools will engage in commercial activities through fostering joint ventures with private investors.
A business development unit will be established at the Ministry’s head office to supervise, monitor and evaluate the implementation of the schools’ commercial venture project.
… It also seeks to increase uptake and application of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM).
Other areas of focus entail improving research, development and innovation; vocational skills and entrepreneurship among the youth and citizens and access to affordable quality education.</blockquote>
Practical subjects include metalwork, building, agriculture, fashion and woodwork.
Speaking on Sunday, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Cain Mathema said proceeds of these commercial ventures will be used to fund programmes at schools and relieve parents of the burden of paying fees.

Schools To Focus On Profit-making And Academic Excellence

Students from St Johns’ Chikwaka have dropped an album titled extra blessings, Daily News reports. The students produced their album in line with the new curriculum and were assisted by Noel Murerwa.
Murerwa spoke to the Daily News about the album and said:
<blockquote>This is the first album with the school in line with the new curriculum to help children develop life skills and encourage them to pursue other avenues of survival. It is also a move to identify and nurture talent in its raw form and develop them.
We give children the opportunity to professional platforms such as recording studios and perform live so that things such as stage fright will be dealt with at an early stage.</blockquote>

High School Students Drop An Album

The Zimbabwe Teachers’ Association (ZIMTA) said that the new curriculum came at the right time as it will produce graduates who are effective participants in society.
This was said by ZIMTA chief executive officer Sifiso Ndlovu on Tuesday in an interview with state media on the sidelines of the organisation’s national annual conference in held Harare. Said Sibanda:
<blockquote>It is important for teachers to be well trained and developed so as to produce graduates who are effective participants in society.
The new curriculum is the answer to the new generation. We want a generation which creates employment, not to rely on being employed as was the benefit of the old curriculum.
Gone are the days when institutions used to produce people who are only trained to be employed. Institutions must contribute to the development of the nation through graduates who have solutions to challenges.</blockquote>
Sibanda commended the government for adopting the new curriculum as it will equip the present generation with the necessary knowledge required on the job.

Teachers Hail New Curriculum As The Answer To Present Challenges

The Zimbabwe Schools Examination Council (Zimsec) website crashed on Wednesday, after failing to handle a huge spike in traffic generated through endless online queries by Ordinary Level students who are trying to access their November 2018 results released on Tuesday. In a statement released on Tuesday, ZIMSEC said:
<blockquote>We are pleased to announce that, beginning with the November 2018 Ordinary Level Examinations. results will be accessible to Candidates and authorised personnel online. This will be done through the ZIMSEC website: www.zimsec.co.zw.
Instructions on how to access the Results Panel are available on the ZIMSEC Examination Portal page. A circular to this effect has been sent out to all concerned institutions. The ZIMSEC Examination Panel can be accessed from any electronic device that supports the Internet.
Results on the Portal arc in view only mode, therefore, they cannot be printed. The Results Slip which can only be collected by the candidates from their respective Examination Centres is the official document of ZIMSEC results.</blockquote>
However, candidates trying to check their results on the ZIMSEC website on Wednesday were welcomed by an error message that read:
<blockquote>The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later.</blockquote>
The November 2018 Ordinary Level exams were the first to be written under the controversial new curriculum introduced by former Minister of Education Lazarus Dokora in 2016. A ZimLive.com report summarised the 2018 pass rate and those preceeding:

ZIMSEC Website Crashes As Thousands Of Pupils Seek To Access O' Level Results Online

The government through the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has acquiesced to demands from parents and stakeholders by suspending continuous assessment for this year’s Ordinary and Advanced Level classes. The tasks and continuous assessment were introduced as part of the new curriculum by the much-maligned former Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Lazarus Dokora.  However, teachers and parents complained about the way the new curriculum had been implemented saying that there was inadequate consultation as well as poor planning.
However, when Dokora was fired by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, his replacement Professor Paul Mavima initially said that the New Curriculum was not going anywhere.  He later conceded that the government was going to review the new curriculum in order to address the concerns of parents and teachers such as the contentious issues of tasks.

Government Reviewing New Curriculum, Suspends Tasks, Continuous Assessment For O Level, A Level Exam Classes

The Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Professor Paul Mavima has revealed that the government will be reviewing the new curriculum to address concerns from parents and teachers. However, the minister is upbeat about the review saying that is will address contentious issues such as tasks. The new curriculum which was introduced under the tenure of the much-maligned former minister of education Lazarus Dokora has produced a lot of debate with some criticising it for being resource intensive. Many have also criticised the manner of its implementation arguing that it was rushed. Said Mavima
<blockquote>
I am still waiting for a full report from the technical team, but we will be making a few adjustments (to the new curriculum) before the end of the month. The issue of tasks – that they be streamlined – the issue of continuous assessment, needs a redo.</blockquote>
Speaking at a curriculum review meeting organised by the Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe last week, Mavima said:
<blockquote>
Our objective is to have a competency-based curriculum so that we create the competencies and skills that are required to move our country forward.
When everything is said and done, there are certain skills that we are pushing for. We are looking for a learner who when they go through their studies, can look at a problem and start seeing solutions to them. The whole idea of innovation starts at infant level in countries like China.
We cannot be stuck in the 20th century when things are moving so fast now. We cannot train children for jobs we do not know if they will still be around in the future, but what you can train for is someone who can quickly adapt and offer themselves as value creators in any job situation they find themselves. That is the type of thing we are pushing for as far as this curriculum is concerned.</blockquote>

Govt To Review New Curriculum Says Minister Mavima

The Zimbabwe Teachers Association (Zimta) has complained that the New Education Curriculum is forcing teachers to use their own funds due to the lack of resources needed to implement the new curriculum. The new Curriculum was introduced in January this year and is reportedly negatively affecting teachers in the rural areas especially, due to the disparity in resources between urban and rural schools.
Zimta president Mr Richard Gundane said:
<blockquote>Teachers need books among other materials in order to effectively implement the new curriculum.
Some of the teachers are using their own money to access material from the internet which they then use to teach the pupils</blockquote>

Teacher's union says New Curriculum is forcing teachers to use their own funds, due to lack of resources

Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Prisca Mupfumira has revealed that the government has started recruiting 2 300 teachers ahead of the second term. The teachers will enable the implementation of the new curriculum. The recruitment is expected to be completed before schools open next week.
Said Mupfumira:
<blockquote>We have started the process of recruiting the 2 300 teachers before schools open for the second term.
We are working on the modalities and administrative issues and we are looking forward to completing the process by Monday next week.</blockquote>
The government expectsa to recruit 7 000 teachers in the end, with the 2 300 being the first batch.

Govt to recruit 2 300 teachers to implement new curriculum ahead of second term

Under the new curriculum Ordinary Level students will be expected to go for a 5 month industrial attachment and Government is engaging private companies and non-governmental organisations to facilitate the process.The initiative will also see some students get driver’s licences under a special arrangement.
Secretary for Primary and Secondary Education Dr Slyvia Utete-Masango told The Sunday Mail last week that:
<blockquote>We have been communicating with several companies and humanitarian organisations to cater for students in various disciplines. For instance, those who want to focus on agriculture might get an opportunity for such practice with the Agriculture and Rural Development Authority. And those in pure arts like visual arts, for instance, might get stints at the National Art Gallery. This programme aims to help students choose paths they want to take in terms of academic or vocational training. Even if they drop out of school at any level, they will have skills that can sustain them for life. We are going to implement the programme as soon as we have finalised modalities with different companies and organisations.</blockquote>
The curriculum became effective this year, with Government setting the number of subjects one can sit for at O-level at 10, with seven of them compulsory. The curriculum has been criticised with some citing that there were  no proper consultations done among other issues.
