<p class="js-tweet-text tweet-text with-linebreaks " lang="en">The Secretary-General of the Zimbabwe Association of Doctors for Human Rights, Dr Norman Matara has warned the citizenry to expect more side effects when they get second jabs of the COVID-19 vaccines.</p>
<p class="js-tweet-text tweet-text with-linebreaks " lang="en">Dr. Matara said there was no need to panic as that is a common phenomenon that suggests that one&#8217;s body is producing more antibodies. He tweeted this Thursday:</p>

<p class="js-tweet-text tweet-text with-linebreaks " lang="en">The 2nd doses of the vaccine in Zim are due today for some people. The 2nd dose usually triggers a faster and stronger immune response. Expect more side effects than the 1st dose. If this happens, it&#8217;s actually a good thing. Shows the body is producing more antibodies Musazoti 666 yatanga (when you see that happening, don&#8217;t speculate that 666 [satanism] has begun)</p>
<div class="js-card-container">Common side effects to expect include muscle aches and pains, headaches, fever, fatigue, and chills. Roughly 40-50% people will experience this. No matter how severe the symptoms are, they are self-limiting. They do go away within days.</div>

<div class="js-card-container">Zimbabwe took delivery of the second batch of Chinese-manufactured COVID-19 vaccines &#8211; Sinopharm and Sinovac- that is meant to kickstart the second rollout of the vaccination programme.</div>

<div class="js-card-container">According to the Minister of Health and Child Care, Vice President <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Constantino_Chiwenga">Constantino Chiwenga</a>, the second rollout will also target the education and religious sectors following the <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/11/21/dr-norman-matara-responds-to-distress-call-treats-sickly-gogo-free-of-charge-report/">reopening of schools for examination classes</a> and the authorisation of religious groups.</div>

<div class="js-card-container">Dr. Matara&#8217;s remarks come as some have been sceptical of the COVID-19 vaccines at the backdrop of conspiracy theories that suggest that the vaccines were produced to depopulate Africa.</div>

<div class="js-card-container">Others are just afraid that since the COVID-19 vaccines were not tried and tested over a long period of time, as required, and since their efficacy is not known, they might have huge or more than expected side effects.</div>

<div class="js-card-container">Meanwhile, the United Nations&#8217; World Health Organisation (WHO) is adamant that the vaccines are safe and so far have not produced any side effects to warranty their suspension.</div>

Dr Matara: Expect More Side Effects From 2nd COVID-19 Doses

<p>Experts have said COVID-19 is yet to reach its peak in Zimbabwe and the situation will get worse before it gets better, the Daily News reports.</p>
<p>The publication spoke to Mpilo Hospital Director Dr. Solwayo Ngwenya who told the publication that:</p>
<blockquote><p>This is just the beginning. When a pandemic hits a community, there will be loads and loads of deaths and we are not even close to where the pandemic can go<i>.</i></p>

<div>We are talking of double figures now, but the deaths are going to increase and soon we will be talking of triple figures a day.</div>

<p>What we are seeing now are called index deaths. We cannot expect deaths to decrease anytime soon. We actually have to expect more deaths, especially with the way people are behaving towards the virus.</p>
<p>We are going to experience the consequences of us allowing the virus to spread. We have not seen the worst of it yet.</p></blockquote>
<p>Another expert, Senior Hospital Doctors Association (SHDA), Aaron Musara said COVID-19 deaths will continue to increase:</p>
<blockquote><p>Currently, there is no adherence to control measures to an acceptable level, yet strict adherence to the preventative measures against Covid-19 is one effective way to bring down death figures.</p>
<p>People are not following Covid-19 rules and as long as people are flouting the control regulations, Covid-19 cases and deaths will continue to increase.</p></blockquote>
<p>Dr. Norman Matara of the Zimbabwe Association of Doctors for Human Rights (ZADHR) said people should not delay going to the hospital in order to save their own lives against the killer virus:</p>
<blockquote><p>A lot of people are delaying going to hospitals and when they do, it will be too late, which explains why deaths are increasing.</p>
<p>The health system also needs to be attended to before things get much worse than they already are. A lot of people would have survived and in future will survive if there are enough resources in hospitals.</p>
<p>The costs in many hospitals are also not allowing an ordinary person to get treatment in those hospitals that are taking care of Covid-19 patients, which means that they will just suffer at home till they die.</p></blockquote>
<p>President Mnangagwa during a national addressed urged people to calm down as he said help is on the way. This was after it emerged that Russia and China offered Zimbabwe their vaccines at a cheaper price than that of other drugs produced in other countries like Pfizer.</p>

Things Will Get Worse Before They Get Better - Experts On COVID-19

<p>Doctors have vowed to continue with their strike and said the government should just meet its end of the bargain to avert the looming crisis, rather than plead with them to return to work, The Standard reports.</p>
<p>This was revealed by Norman Matara, the Zimbabwe Doctors for Human Rights secretary-general when he was speaking to the publication. Matara said:</p>
<blockquote><p>The government should simply meet its end of the bargain, pay health workers a living wage, provide them with adequate personal protective equipment, and equip hospitals with medicines and equipment. If they do this simple task, health workers will happily return to work and do their job of saving lives.</p>
<p>The government wants health workers to act “in the nation’s interest and exhibit a sense of responsibility’, yet the same government is not meeting its end of responsibilities. Health workers cannot work on empty stomachs and without protective clothing simply because they save lives.</p></blockquote>
<p>Seniors doctors downed their tools last month and joined other health workers who had already embarked on industrial action against their employer several weeks before.</p>
<p>The <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/07/31/ed-pleads-with-striking-health-workers-to-return-to-work/">president pleaded with health workers </a>to return to work as the COVID-19 outbreak reach unprecedented levels in Zimbabwe.</p>

The Government Should Simply Meet Its End Of The Bargain - Doctors Vow To Continue Their Strike

<p>Doctors from the Zimbabwe Hospitals Doctors Association (ZHDA) said that they successfully carried out an operation on a lady (pictured) on Friday who was assaulted by police.</p>
<p>The lady reportedly fractured her right patella or kneecap (a flat, circular-triangular bone which articulates with the femur (thigh bone) and covers and protects the anterior articular surface of the knee joint) following the assault.</p>
<p>She is said to have been on her way to <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Nyabira" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><strong>Nyabira</strong></a> to visit a relative when she was caught in the crossfire when riot police swooped on MDC supporters who were waiting to be addressed by party leader <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Nelson_Chamisa" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><strong>Nelson Chamisa</strong></a> at the party&#8217;s headquarters.</p>
<p>The woman is said to be stable after the successful operation. This was revealed by Dr Norman Matara on Twitter. He wrote:</p>
<blockquote><p>As Zimbabwe Hospitals Doctors Association, we successfully operated this lady yesterday who fractured her right patella after being assaulted by the police whilst en route to visit a relative in Nyabira. The operation was successful and the lady is stable.</p></blockquote>
