Warrior’s right-back Tendayi Darikwa recently took to social media to share an emotional message with Wigan Athletic supporters after his departure from the club was confirmed.
The 31-year-old Zimbabwean international will leave Wigan at the end of the 2022/23 season following their relegation from the Championship, ending his two-and-a-half-year stay at the club.
Darikwa shared a message on Instagram, reflecting on his time with the Latics and thanking the fans for their support. He wrote:

On the day I signed for Wigan Athletic, the club was fighting for survival at the bottom of League One.
It was a difficult journey, but after survival, we were crowned league champions and gained promotion to the Championship.
Captaining that group was an honour and to share a dressing room with my teammates is something I will never forget, and I couldn’t have been more proud of the way we performed for our supporters.
This season has been difficult; we worked as hard as we physically could and didn’t achieve what we set out to do.
That’s football, sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. But we gave it everything and left it all out there on the pitch.
It is with a heavy heart that I announce that I have played my last game for Wigan Athletic.
I leave with nothing but respect for my teammates and the people who helped me along the way.
I hope things move in a more positive direction off the pitch. Wigan is such a fantastic club, and I would love nothing more than to see my teammates get treated with the honesty and respect they deserve.
Thank you to the fans for the support you have shown me, my teammates and the hard-working staff. I wish you all nothing but success for the club in the future.

Darikwa joined Wigan from Nottingham Forest in January 2021, helping them escape relegation from League One in his first season before captaining them to the third-tier title the following year.
He departs Wigan after making 116 appearances during his time in Lancashire.

Tendayi Darikwa Leaves Wigan Athletic

Warriors full-back Tendayi Darikwa and his Wigan Athletic teammates have finally been paid their wages after a two-week delay.
Tendayi Darikwa is the Latics captain.
The Wigan players released a statement on Friday afternoon saying their wages “were two weeks overdue” and accused the club’s owners of “disrespect”.
<a href="https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11095/12841654/wigan-athletic-players-accuse-owners-of-disrespect-after-wages-go-unpaid-again">Sky Sports News</a> reported that later in the day, it was confirmed that the players had been paid.
Wigan were deducted three points earlier in March for failing to pay players for the fourth time in nine months. A statement from Wigan’s players said:

We are all proud to play for Wigan Athletic Football Club and we recognise that it has been a difficult season for the club in terms of results and performances on the pitch.
With a lot of speculation in the media surrounding the club off the pitch, we want to clarify the current position we find ourselves in. We haven’t been paid our wages this month and they are now two weeks overdue.
To add to that, we have been given inaccurate information on numerous occasions about when the outstanding wages would be paid and this isn’t the first time this has happened to us this season.
The disrespect that this shows all members of staff at the club isn’t acceptable and it needs to change. We are now closer to next month’s pay and the staff at this club need reassuring that the situation will change.
This isn’t just about the players, this is about the financial security and well-being of every member of our WAFC family that work at the club.
Finally, Wigan is a working-class town that prides itself on hard work, integrity and sticking together as a community.
We need the owners of the club to show this commitment and respect to the staff and the fans.
Thank you for all your support in what is a difficult time for everyone associated with the club.

Chairman Talal Al Hammad said late wage payments would “never happen again”. He said in a statement:

I think it is important to be as honest and open with you as possible. As the club statement dated March 10 stated, we had a cash flow issue which caused the delay.
This issue has now been resolved and I can assure you that the late payment of wages will not happen again. It simply cannot happen again.

Wigan’s points deduction leaves them eight points adrift of safety in the Championship with just six matches left to play this season.

Tendayi Darikwa Finally Paid By Wigan Athletic

Warriors defender and Wigan Athletic captain Tendayi Darikwa injured his shoulder during Saturday’s 1-5 loss to Burnely.
Darikwa required lengthy treatment after going down in the second half against his former club but was able to leave the pitch on his own with his left arm in a makeshift sling.
Wigan Athletic manager Leam Richardson confirmed the injury didn’t look good but expressed hope that Darikwa won’t be sidelined for a prolonged period of time. He said:
<blockquote>
Obviously, it didn’t look good, it looks like he’s dislocated his shoulder.
Knowing Tendayi, he’ll do everything he can to make sure he’s fit and available as quickly as possible.
At the moment, though, it’s too early to diagnose what the problem is and how long he’ll be out.

The 30-year-old has featured prominently for Wigan since joining from Nottingham Forest in January last year.
Meanwhile, goals from Jay Rodriguez (17), Josh Brownhill (27, 86), Nathan Tella (51) and Samuel Bastien (88) confined Wigan to a heavy defeat. Wigan’s only goal was a penalty converted by Will Kean (43).

Wigan Athletic captain Tendayi Darikwa snubbed the latest Warriors call up, leading to speculation he might follow the footsteps of his compatriots Khama Billiat and Knowledge Musona in quitting international football.
Darikwa last played for Zimbabwe in the World Cup qualifier against Ghana in Cape Coast in September 2021.
He was reportedly called to play in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers before it was confirmed Zimbabwe would not take part, and he turned down the invitation.
Speaking to Soccer24, National Teams General Manager Wellington Mpandare said Darikwa was not happy with the suspended Felton Kamambo-led ZIFA board. Said Mpandare:

It will take a lot of convincing to have him back. Tendayi was never happy with the ZIFA board because of false promises before and during the Egypt AFCON tournament.

Darikwa Shuts Door On Warriors, Unhappy With ZIFA Over Broken Promises

Warriors right-back Tendayi Darikwa has withdrawn from the squad to face Bafana Bafana in the 2022 FIFA World Cup Africa Group G qualifier on Thursday due to undisclosed personal reasons.
Darikwa is one of three players who had been invited to the squad by coach Norman Mapeza but were absent from the team’s first training session which was held in Sandton, South Africa, on Tuesday morning.
Knox Mutizwa and Brendon Galloway also missed out on the training session but had both joined the squad by Tuesday evening.
Meanwhile, Leicester City sensation Tawanda Maswanhise will miss the Bafana Bafana match as he is trying to obtain a Zimbabwean passport.
He is expected to make it for the Ethiopia clash on Sunday in Harare.

Warriors right-back Tendayi Darikwa has been named Wigan Athletic captain, the English League One club confirmed on Friday.
Meanwhile, Max Power has been confirmed as Club’s vice-captain after his return from Sunderland, while Jamie Jones remains as Latics’ Club captain. The club said:

We can confirm that Tendayi Darikwa is the Wigan Athletic captain for the 2021/22 season, with Max Power and Jamie Jones forming the Club’s leadership team as vice-captain and Club Captain.

England-based Warriors defender, Tendayi Darikwa has extended his stay at English League One side Wigan Athletic after signing a two-year contract saying “I’m delighted to be back here.”
The 29-year old whose contract was set to expire in June is one of the nine players at the club who have been offered new deals.
The Latics announced this Thursday that they were delighted to confirm that defender Darikwa has signed a new deal at the Club until the summer of 2023. Said the club:
<blockquote>_Darikwa joined Latics in January following his departure from Sky Bet Championship side Nottingham Forest, making over 50 appearances for the Club._
_The right-sided defender was a mainstay in Latics’ starting XI in the second half of the 2020-21 League One season and played a crucial role as he helped Leam Richardson’s side heroically survive from relegation against all of the odds._
_After making his debut in the 3-3 draw at Rochdale in January, the Zimbabwe international went on to make a further 25 league appearances for Latics, helping the defence provide a solid platform to push towards safety._

Several Nottingham Forest fans expressed their displeasure on social media over Tendayi Darikwa’s departure from the club to join Wigan Athletic on loan.
Nottingham Forest confirmed that the Warriors full-back had completed a loan move to the Latics and will be at DW Stadium until the end of the current season.
One Reds fan said it was incredible that Cyrus Christie was being selected ahead of Darikwa and that it was a shame to lose the Clifton Cafu.

Nottingham Forest Fans React To Darikwa's Move To Wigan

Nottingham Forest coach Sabri Lamouchi says he has been impressed by Tendayi Darikwa’s progress in the past weeks after the player recovered from a ruptured anterior (ACL) on the eve of this campaign.
The Zimbabwean defender resumed training in late February but was given more time to blend with the team and Lamouchi has not used him yet since the restart of the season.
He made his first appearance in the matchday squad of this term last weekend but was on the bench for the entire 1-1 draw against Preston.
With Matty Cash a doubt in Forest’s clash against Swansea tonight, the coach has suggested that Darikwa can step up to fill the right-back position. He said in a press conference:

Darikwa Set For League Season Debut

England-based Warriors right-back Tendayi Darikwa returned to training at the Nigel Doughty Academy on Monday for the first time in more than two months.
The Nottingham Forest defender has yet to feature in a game in the 2019/20 season after suffering a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) on the eve of the campaign.
An ACL is one of the most common knee injuries which affect athletes who participate in high demand sports like soccer, [American] football, and basketball.
Darikwa (28) started light training at the end of February, just two weeks before the English Championship was suspended due to the coronavirus crisis.
On Monday, he posted a picture on Instagram of himself running, while keeping a safe distance from teammate Matty Cash, and said: “Good to be back.”
He could get some minutes on the field when the season resumes as the league is left with nine rounds.
Should Forest secure a promotion play-offs spot (position 3-6), the side will play a few more games, giving him a chance to fully wear off the rust ahead of next season.

Warriors fullback Tendayi Darikwa said that it will be an honour for him to represent Zimbabwe at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations to be hosted by Egypt.
Speaking during an interview with his English Championship club, Nottingham Forest, Darikwa said:
<blockquote>It’s a fantastic honour for me to be representing my country at a tournament such as the African Cup of Nations.
It means competing against the best players in Africa which will be a tough test but I’m ready to step up to the challenge and make my country proud.</blockquote>
He added that he is looking forward to the brilliant atmosphere of facing Egyptian stars such as Mohamed Salah, who has been top goalscorer in England in each of the past two seasons. Said Darikwa:

Darikwa said that The Warrior would play to make the fans proud of the national team, not only those who will accompany the team to Egypt, but also those who will be following the matches from home.
After the Egypt clash (on June, 21), Zimbabwe faces Uganda on the 26th and their final group match will be against the Democratic Republic of Congo on 30th June.

Darikwa Tells Nottingham Forest Of His Pride In Playing For Zimbabwe

Nottingham Forest and Warriors fullback Tendayi Darikwa is hopeful that his English Championship club will make it into the playoffs position and fight for promotion to the English Premier League (EPL) next season.
Nottingham Forest is currently 9th on the log standings with 7 games left. The top six teams, (that is, the teams that finish 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th) will play in the playoffs, the winner joining the winners and runners-up of the Championship in being promoted to the EPL.
In an interview on Nottingham Post website, Darikwa expressed optimism that they will make it to the playoffs. He said:
<blockquote>It is up there with the top leagues in Europe, in terms of how competitive it is.
It is one of the few leagues where the majority of teams will feel like they have a chance of promotion or even of winning the league.
It is a competitive league, and I wish we were higher in the table – but we still have a chance, and we have to take that belief into these games.</blockquote>
Darikwa became the first footballer born in the United Kingdom to play for The Warriors. He helped Zimbabwe qualify for the AFCON finals to be hosted by Egypt in June/July this year.

Warriors defender Tendayi Darikwa says he is excited for the game against Congo Brazzaville set for the National Sports Stadium on Sunday.

Warriors-Congo Clash 'Excites' Tendayi Darikwa

Warriors fullback Tendayi Darikwa’s Championship Club Nottingham Forest was held to a 0-0 draw by Derby County.
Darikwa almost conceded a penalty during the match after he appeared to foul Tom Lawrence. However, the referee Keith Stroud waved play on.
Commenting on the penalty incident after the match, Derby Manager Frank Lampard had this to say
<blockquote>I think that the most staunch Nottingham Forest fan in the far side of the stadium thought that was a penalty. The easiest penalty to give is one where the striker gets a touch, clearly, and the defender follows through and catches him in the waist, clearly. The referee is on his own in his opinion that wasn’t a penalty. It was a game-changer.</blockquote>
However, Nottingham Forest manager Aitor Karanka has a different view. He said

Tendayi Darikwa's Nottingham Forest Held To A 0-0 Draw By Derby County In English Championships Match

Zimbabwean Warriors and Nottingham Forest defender Tendayi Darikwa has been praised for sending his boots and shirts to Zimbabwe to help grassroots football.
Writing on microblogging site Twitter on Sunday, Darikwa said
<blockquote>On behalf of all my teammates and everyone at #NFFC, I will be sending a selection of boots and shirts to help grassroots level football in Zimbabwe.</blockquote>
Darikwa was born in 1991 in Nottingham, in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northen Ireland to expatriate Zimbabweans parents.
He made his Warriors debut in October in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier away to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
A fan of Darikwa wrote

Warriors Defender Tendayi Darikwa Praised For Donating Boots, Shirts To Local Grassroots Football

United Kingdom based, Marshall Gore, who has said that Burnley defender Tendayi Darikwa is ready to commit to the Warriors. He said that even though the defender cannot feature in Zimbabwe’s opening AFCON 2019 qualifying match against Liberia on June 11 because he holds a British passport, he would still like to travel to the country so that he gets to know his teammates better.
Said Gore:
<blockquote>The latest is that after a lot of discussions I can reveal that Darikwa has committed himself to playing for Zimbabwe and that is very positive news indeed. A lot has been said and written about his situation but he is a professional and we had to talk to him at that level and he has told me that he has made up his decision and wants to play for Zimbabwe.</blockquote>
Gore said that he was waiting for ZIFA to give him the green light so that he can buy a ticket for Darikwa to fly to Harare.
