Four primary schools near Matusadona National Park are set to benefit from a €200,000 feeding scheme that will last until March 2025.
The schools receiving support are Nselelo Primary School (under Chief Negande), Dove Primary School (Chief Mola), Chikuro Primary School (Chief Nebiri), and Majazo Primary School (Chief Musambakaruma).
Tinashe Farawo, a spokesperson for the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks), revealed the details of the feeding scheme during a media tour of the national park.
In 2019, Zimparks invited African Parks to assume management of Matusadona National Park under a 20-year agreement. The goal is to revitalise the park for the benefit of both wildlife and surrounding communities.

The scheme is expected to improve school attendance and reduce dropouts. Remember this is a very difficult year.
The harvest from this region was close to nothing owing to the less rainfall received.
The school feeding programme will have a major impact on children’s physical health, development and learning outcomes as, for many children, food at school will be the first meal of the day.
Adequate nutrition is essential for optimal cognitive function and learning. In drought-affected areas, where families may struggle to provide sufficient meals, feeding schemes in schools can ensure that students receive regular and nutritious meals.

Last week, United Nations officials appealed to the international community for support to help Zimbabwe address the humanitarian impacts of El Niño which is threatening 7.6 million people with acute hunger.
According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), more than 22 per cent of school-aged children are out of school because of the economic and social impacts of the drought.

Feeding Scheme Benefits 1,300 Primary School Learners

In a recent incident in Katombora, Middle Zambezi Valley, two suspected poachers met a fatal end after engaging in a firefight with Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife (Zimparks) rangers.
The confrontation resulted in the deaths of the poachers, while three others were apprehended. 
The rangers acted swiftly to protect wildlife and recovered 15 elephant tusks, along with a rifle and ammunition.
Zimparks spokesperson Tinashe Farawo confirmed the incident posting on X:

2 suspected poachers were gunned down in Katombora (Mid Zambezi) after an exchange of fire with @Zimparks rangers while 3 were arrested. 15 tusks, 375 rifle, 5 rounds of ammunition were recovered. Investigations are in progress.

Poaching remains a critical issue in Zimbabwe, threatening the country’s rich wildlife heritage.
A recent investigation revealed a cyanide scandal implicating authorities and a mysterious Chinese businesswoman named Li Song.
According to The NewsHawks report, a staggering 40 tonnes and a pallet containing 1.1 tonnes of cyanide were clandestinely and unlawfully stored at a warehouse in Bulawayo.
Cyanide, commonly associated with mining, is also used by poachers, with recent reports suggest that over 300 elephants have died in Hwange National Park due to poachers lacing watering holes and salt licks with cyanide.

Two Poachers Gunned Down, Three Arrested In Mid-Zambezi

In the tranquil fishing community of Gatche Gatche, nestled along the shores of Lake Kariba, a chilling legend has taken root.
Residents speak in hushed tones of a crocodile with supernatural powers—a creature that has allegedly claimed the lives of more than 21 people, primarily fishermen.
But it’s not the sheer number of victims that sets this reptile apart; it’s the gruesome manner of their demise.
Locals have christened this elusive giant reptile as “Macheni” because of the crocodile’s peculiar taste for human private parts.
Victims consistently lose these intimate body parts, while the rest of their bodies remain untouched.
Some even speculate that Macheni is no ordinary predator. Instead, it serves as a weapon, wielded by an individual possessing potent “magical powers.”
This mysterious figure allegedly employs the harvested private parts for dark arts.
Kariba residents, who shared their accounts with <a href="https://www.hmetro.co.zw/the-terror-of-kariba-with-a-taste-for-human-private-partszimparks-spokesperson-tinashe-farawo-responding-to-h-metro-enquiries-has-told-this-newspaper-that-residents-of-the-affe/">H-Metro</a>, insist that Macheni is no mere crocodile. They believe it is a phantom, slipping through the murky waters undetected.
Officials from the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) have reportedly struggled to track down and eliminate this enigmatic creature.
Residents also allege that most, if not all, of the attacks have occurred in a concentrated region.
Tinashe Farawo, Zimparks spokesperson, acknowledges the community’s belief that Macheni transcends the natural realm. He said:

A total of 32 lives were lost from crocodile attacks in Lake Kariba, between Sanyati River and the Lake Kariba Dam Wall, between 2016 and 2023.
Between 2016 and 2023, 38 crocodiles were eliminated during the same period. Over 40 crocodiles were also captured and translocated.
As from 2019, legal and illegal gill netting fishers in Gatche Gatche area assumed that crocodile attacks taking place in the Tsetse Island general area were caused by one crocodile.
While the fact that the attacks are caused by only one crocodile remains an assumption, efforts have been made by Zimparks to assess the area and to eliminate suspect crocodiles in the general area.
The community has named the alleged crocodile “Macheni.” Reasons for the assumption that the crocodile attacks were caused by one crocodile emanated from the fact that most of the attacks were taking place in one general area.
“The fishers have a belief that the crocodile is a spiritual crocodile and this is the reason they named it “Macheni,” since they claim that the crocodile used to only remove testicles from men after the attack.”

Farawo said that their observations have revealed that the crocodile attacks in this area were generally taking place at night. He added:

Gill netting at night is not allowed, it is actually conducted by poachers. The area of concern is not a legal fishing ground, which they also called “Macheni Bay”. Illegal fishers usually delay giving reports of attacks and this makes follow up difficult.
The reasons why most of the attacks were taking place in this general area were that many people were flocking to this area to do illegal fishing, this is probably because they were enjoying good fish catches in this area.
It is also a fact that crocodiles also feed on fish and they also tend to flock areas with more fish and this has caused this conflict. 
More than 7 crocodiles have been eliminated in the general area between 2020 and 2023, however, the Gatche Gatche community has maintained that the alleged “Macheni” is still alive. 
Several attempts to eliminate the alleged crocodile were done way after the crocodile attacks, since all reports are received days after the attacks, making the searches difficult. 
We have also called upon the Gatche Gatche community to help to identify the alleged crocodile so that we eliminate it once it has been spotted.
We are continuing working with the fishers association to identification of the alleged crocodile.

Farawo said between December and January this year, Zimparks intensified anti-poaching patrols at Tsetse Island and removed all poachers, who periodically put illegal shelters.
He said since then, no person has been attacked by crocodiles at the alleged “Macheni Bay”.
Farawo added that once the specific crocodile is positively identified, Zimparks will take decisive action to eliminate the threat it poses.

“Macheni”: The Enigmatic Crocodile Of Lake Kariba That Allegedly Feeds On Human Privates

A 67-year-old Australian tourist has gone missing in Zimbabwe’s Victoria Falls National Park.
Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority spokesman Tinashe Farawo confirmed the development last week on Friday. He said:

A 67-year-old Australian tourist has gone missing in Victoria Falls. A Zimparks reaction team and [ZRP officers] are on the ground searching for the missing tourist. Drones, sniffer dogs, and trackers are also on the ground to increase coverage.

Such incidences are said to be rare in Victoria Falls, a destination that attracts thousands of tourists from across the world.
However, there are a few cases that have been recorded in other parks. In October 2023, a German tourist went missing in Matusadona National Park in northern Zimbabwe.
The tourist was found alive and in good health three days after he was reported missing.
Andreas Hoberg had last been seen buying a drink at the park shop in Matusadona National Park before going for a game drive around 3 PM.
He failed to return by 6 PM when all game drives should have ended, and the car rental company failed to locate him on its GPS tracking system.
It later emerged that Hoberg’s car had developed a mechanical fault deep in the jungle.

Australian Tourist Reported Missing In Victoria Falls Park

The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Authority (Zimparks) has expressed concern about the increasing number of elephants in Hwange National Park. This concern comes after the death of over 100 elephants due to a drought caused by El Nino. The water sources in the park have dried up, leading to a difficult situation for the elephants.
Tinashe Farawo, the spokesperson for Zimparks, explained that there is no need to panic because the park is already overcrowded with elephants, posing a danger to the environment. He mentioned that out of the 45,000 elephants in the park, only 100 have died, <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/zimparks-concerned-with-elephant-population-destroying-the-environment/">NewZimbabwe</a> reported. The high temperatures and lack of rain have caused stress and death among the elephants. He said in an interview:

We are talking of only 100 elephants in a park with over 45 000 elephants.
It’s expected because the weather is hot. We have high temperatures and we have no water since we haven’t been receiving rain. They are bound to be stressed and die.
What we are concerned about is that they are overpopulated and they are destroying the habitat…in fact, they are becoming a danger to the environment.

The main concern is the overpopulation of elephants, leading to the destruction of their habitat and posing a threat to the environment. Hwange National Park is part of the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA), which is one of the largest nature and landscape conservation areas in the world, spanning across Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Angola.
To address the problem, Zimparks has installed 104 solar-powered boreholes in the park. However, these boreholes are not sufficient to provide enough water for the wildlife, especially during extreme temperatures. As a result, the animals are forced to travel long distances in search of water.
This is not the first time such a situation has occurred. In 2019, around 200 elephants died due to a dry spell. When elephants move from place to place to find water, they often clash with humans, leading to a rise in human-wildlife conflicts.

Five elephants were found dead in Sinamatela, Hwange, Zimbabwe, and authorities attribute their deaths to dehydration caused by extreme temperatures and a lack of rain. The elephants were part of the population in Hwange National Park, which is home to an estimated 44,000 elephants. In a statement seen by Pindula News, Zimbabwe National Parks Authority spokesperson, Tinashe Farawo said preliminary investigations have shown that they succumbed to dehydration. He said:

In recent years, elephants have been migrating to neighbouring Botswana in search of water. However, this year, the migration started earlier due to the water crisis. Young and elderly elephants, as well as those who were unable to travel long distances, have been particularly vulnerable to dehydration and hunger. Farawo told <a href="https://www.news24.com/news24/africa/news/five-elephants-die-of-dehydration-in-zimbabwe-as-el-nino-sweeps-across-africa-20231205">News24</a>:

As the dry period persists, young, ailing, and elderly elephants are particularly vulnerable since they are unable to travel great distances in search of water and food; some have been stranded near water holes, foraging all plants within their range.

Zimparks is drilling boreholes powered by solar energy in wildlife sanctuaries to provide water. However, when surface water dries up, animals are forced to travel long distances to find food and water. In 2019, about 200 elephants died due to the drought.
To protect the country’s wildlife, including elephants and lions, it may be necessary to relocate them to areas with better access to water and food. The lack of rain and rising temperatures, exacerbated by the El Nino weather pattern, continue to pose a threat to wildlife in Southern Africa.
Hwange National Park is part of the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA), covering Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Angola. In a statement seen by Pindula News, ZIMPARKS spokesperson, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Tinashe_Farawo/">Tinashe Farawo</a> said:

A Germany tourist who had gone missing in Matusadonha National Park from Saturday afternoon has been found. He is alive and well. 
We were gravely worried. We are happy he is well. He says his car developed a mechanical fault. It’s a white car, so we were hopeful we would find it.

Andreas Hoberg, who went missing in <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Matusadona_National_Park/">Matusadona National Park</a>, was driving a white car. He did not return by 6 p.m., and the car rental company couldn’t find him using GPS tracking. Farawo said the area has poor phone network coverage.
Authorities used a helicopter, vehicles, and sniffer dogs to search the park, which is home to dangerous animals.

German Tourist Who Went Missing In Matusadonha National Park On Saturday Afternoon Found

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_National_Parks_and_Wildlife_Authority/">Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZIMPARKS)</a> has said a significant number of elephants from Hwange National Park, the largest national park in Zimbabwe, are migrating to Botswana in search of water.
The park, spanning over 14,600 square kilometres, is a habitat for approximately 50,000 elephants. This movement of animals from Hwange National Park to Botswana began in August. ZIMPARKS spokesperson, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Tinashe_Farawo/">Tinashe Farawo</a>, told AFP:

Many animals have and are moving from Hwange National Park into Botswana.
Water bodies have dried up and the animals are in search for water and food.
</blockquote>
He added that buffaloes and “all types of animals present in the park” were also migrating in scores. Farawo said:

I can’t quantify how many elephants have moved whether its hundreds or thousands but it has been a lot.
The amount of animals migrating has definitely increased over the years due to the increase in water shortages.

Climate change has caused an early migration of wildlife from Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park to Botswana, according to the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority. This movement, which could result in heightened conflicts between humans and animals, poses challenges as animals encroach upon populated areas in search of water.
Tinashe Farawo expressed concerns about increased competition for water resources. Human-wildlife conflicts are already prevalent in remote parts of Zimbabwe, with elephants alone causing the deaths of at least 60 people last year. Zimbabwe has an elephant population of around 100,000, while Botswana boasts the world’s largest elephant population, estimated at 130,000.

Elephants From Zimbabwe's Hwange National Park Migrating To Botswana Due To Water Scarcity

The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZIMPARKS) has suspended two senior officials, Edmund Chirongedzo, the Procurement Officer, and Delia Mapuranga, the Procurement Clerk, effective July 21, 2023, pending investigations into allegations of procurement irregularities.
The suspension follows accusations of tampering with quotations to give favoured suppliers an advantage. ZIMPARKS spokesperson, Tinashe Farawo said:

The Parks and Wildlife Management Authority would like to confirm the suspension of Edmund Chirongedzo the Procurement Officer and Delia Mapuranga the Procurement Clerk, effective 21 July, 2023, pending investigations on allegations of procurement irregularities involving tampering with quotations in order to give advantage to certain suppliers among other malpractices. The suspension is in line with the Government’s drive to fight corruption within public entities.

ZIMPARKS had earlier been accused by a group of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) of threatening to cancel tenders awarded to them. The SMEs supply ZIMPARKS with supplies through tenders and Request for Quote (RFQ), and have accused senior officials at ZIMPARKS of attempting to create a corrupt procurement system. The SMEs had written to the office of the President and Cabinet expressing their concerns over the matter. Reads the letter:

We also seek to bring to the President’s attention that the move by the parastatal is digressing from national policies on Youth and Women Empowerment.
The move was communicated by on Brian Mupandawana who visited all SMEs providing procurement services to the environment entity. We believe that a wave of corruption is now game of the day at the parastatal and this is now affecting the survival of our local businesses.
We are kindly requesting our President through the responsible ministry to intervene on our behalf. We are living up to the Vision of the President in making Zimbabwe great using our own local SMEs, hence “Nyika inovakwa nevene vayo”. Anyone who clamps down on Women and Youths is an enemy of the Second Republic and Vision 2030.

Tinashe Farawo has denied the accusations made by the SMEs that senior officials at ZIMPARKS were attempting to create a corrupt procurement system.
Corruption and tender scandals have been a recurring issue in government parastatals in Zimbabwe. The Auditor General often reports corrupt activities in the awarding of tenders and procurement processes, with some senior officials being implicated in the scandals. These scandals have resulted in financial losses for the government and have undermined the public’s trust in the institutions.

ZIMPARKS Suspends Two Senior Officials Over Procurement Irregularities Allegations

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Parks_%26_Wildlife_Management_Authority">Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks)</a> spokesperson, Tinashe Farawo, has said there were 15 deaths and 43 injuries due to human-wildlife conflict in the first three months of 2023. Last year during the same period, there were 22 deaths and 18 injuries.
Zimbabwe has too many elephants, with around 84 000 exceeding the country’s carrying capacity of 45 000. The ban on the trade in wildlife products and species in Southern Africa has contributed to the ballooning elephant population. 
This has caused an increase in human-wildlife conflict. The elephants are coming into human settlements in search of food and water, causing problems. Farawo said more distress calls were also received this year compared to last year. <a href="https://zbcnews.co.zw/2023/04/06/human-wildlife-conflict-claims-15-in-first-quarter/">ZBC News</a> cites him as saying:

We have noticed a slight decline in terms of people who have been killed by wild animals from last year. Last year we lost about 22 lives in the first quarter and this year we are at 15. The numbers still remain high if you consider instances that we are still recording. Last year we managed to translocate about 95 animals and this year we have already trans-located 150 animals. This is a way of dealing with human-wildlife conflict within our community. There are also cattle, donkeys and goats that were also killed by wild animals. We will continue to engage communities, teaching them about animal behaviour, and what needs to be done with certain species. We are always on the ground and we are also working with a lot of Rural District Councils to which we have given appropriate authority, so it’s not only the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Authority which needs to react to this problem.

Traditional leaders from Chief Shana’s area are worried about the threat of human-wildlife conflict to food security in Hwange District. Village Head, Amos Tolani, from Jabula Village-Chief Mvuthu, said that baboons are destroying their crops, despite good results from the Pfumvudza/Intwasa program in the 2022/23 season. They are calling on Zimparks to relocate problem animals deep into national parks, compensate victims of human-wildlife conflict, pay medical bills, and increase the number of scouts or game rangers in each ward to react quickly if wild animals are seen in communities.
The pending Kavango Zambezi (KAZA) Elephant Aerial Survey results could provide proof that Southern African countries’ appeal to lift the ban on ivory and wildlife species trade is genuine.
A total of 66 people were killed by wild animals last year, down from 68 the year before. However, authorities report that nearly 400 people have died due to human-wildlife conflict in the past five years.

Dynamos Appoint Herbert Marowa As New Head Coach

Dynamos Football Club has castigated the City of Harare after energy company Sakunda Holdings walked away from a deal with the local authority to upgrade Rufaro Stadium.
DeMbare wanted to play home games in Mbare next year and the club had hoped that the agreement signed by Sakunda Holdings and the council earlier this year would give Rufaro stadium a much-needed facelift.
Addressing the media on Friday, Dynamos spokesperson Tinashe Farawo suggested that the local authority is being run by school dropouts who do not appreciate the value of football. Said Farawo:

We condemn in strongest terms what is happening at the Harare City council.
I think football, at the end of the day, should be the winner. We are not happy with what happened and it must not be allowed to continue.
I think to us, as a club, we want to encourage the formal legislature to, at least revisit, the requirements for one to be elected into office.
Some of these people who are running our cities are just school dropouts who do not appreciate the value of football.
We are exploring other options but we have made it clear. We are appealing to the central government to help us in this regard so that people are called to order.

Mbire Rural District Council (RDC) says this year they are experiencing an increase in wild animals coming from Mozambique resulting in an escalation of human-wildlife conflict.
Mbire chief executive officer Mr Cloudius Majaya, said they are also raising awareness on wild animal behaviour and how communities can co-exist with wild animals.
Five crocodiles have been eliminated in Mbire district following attacks on six people, two of them sustained serious injuries since the onset of the current rainy season.
Last week, a 60-year-old Maines Matias from Kagokotoro village in Mbire was gored into pieces by an elephant while looking for water. Majaya said:

We have killed five crocodiles for attacking six people, two of them fatally. Although there is no record of casualties to crocodile attacks we are trying to move people away from rivers.
Most of our people earn their livelihood from fishing and gardening in the river banks of major rivers, Hunyani, Angwa and Zambezi.
We are in the process of repairing an ambulance which will be based at Mushumbi Pools for use during fatalities caused by human and wildlife conflict.

Majaya said following the depression Ana which hit Mbire, large crocodiles are migrating upstream to Mbire to avoid swampy areas.
Also, large herds of elephants are migrating from Mozambique to Mbire where they graze on farmers’ crops. 
Measures to manage eventualities:

1). Mbire RDC arranged to transport victims to the hospital and pay their medical bills.
2). It is increasing the number of boreholes to remove people from river banks and ensure that water is easily accessible.
3). It is training personnel who are working closely with Zimparks in dealing with cases of human-wildlife conflict.

ZimParks spokesperson, Mr Tinashe Farawo, said last year 68 people were killed by wild animals while 79 were injured mostly by crocodiles and elephants.
He said 30 cases were by crocodiles, 24 by elephants. Wild animals also killed 319 cattle, 27 donkeys and 429 goats.

Human-Wildlife Conflict Surge In Mbire

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has reported the death of a poacher who was shot and killed during a shootout with game scouts in Malilangwe Trust, Chiredzi.
In a statement, seen by Pindula News, police said there were three poachers and the other two escaped. Reads the statement:

The ZRP reports a shooting incident which occurred at Malilangwe Trust, Chiredzi involving game scouts and three poachers on 12/03/22. The trio was spotted in the Conservancy by game wardens before an exchange of fire ensued.
One of the suspects was fatally shot and died while two others escaped. Police recovered a CZ550 rifle fitted with a telescope and loaded with one round in the chamber, two spent cartridges, 7 spent cartridges of MK3 rifle, a bag satchel containing a small iron axe and a flick knife. Investigations are underway.

Poaching attracts varying penalties ranging from fines to lengthy jail sentences depending on the animals poached.
According to the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks), pangolins are protected by law, therefore, possessing or dealing in them illegally attracts a prison sentence of up to 12 years.
In 2012, one Tichaona Mutyairi, a Zimbabwe rhino poacher with the infamous Mazhongwe gang, was sentenced to 17 years in jail after being captured during an exchange of gunfire with the police in October 2009.
In 2016, Tawengwa Machona, a poacher who was part of a gang that killed two rhinos in the south of the country was sentenced to 35 years in jail.
Zimbabwe is battling to save its few hundred remaining black and white rhinos amid an upsurge in poaching in recent years. Poaching affects the Tourism sector which has been one of the biggest foreign currency earners for the country.

Poacher Dies In Shootout With Game Scouts

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has arrested one of the poachers who trapped and killed a buffalo in Lupane. The poacher identified as Peter Nyathi has since named his accomplices who are still at large. Said police in a statement:

Police in Lupane are investigating a case of poaching in which one suspect, Peter Nyathi was arrested whilst his accomplices mentioned as Gilbert Moyo, Bukhosi Ncube, Hlalani Matwasa and Mduduzi NFPK are on the run.
The suspects trapped and killed a female buffalo which was identified by members of the National Parks and Wildlife who were on patrol on 22/10/21. An ambush was set leading to the arrest of the suspect who is assisting the police with investigations.

The impact of the pandemic has increased wildlife poaching around Zimbabwe’s national parks, as some people who lost their jobs hunt the animals for food. 
Tinashe Farawo, the spokesman of the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Parks_%26_Wildlife_Management_Authority">Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority</a>, says the efforts of such conservation groups are helping to fight poaching in this wildlife-rich country. 
Anti-poaching organizations, including Damien Mander’s <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Akashinga_Female_Anti-Poaching_Unit">Akashinga (The Brave Ones) project</a>, a squad of vegan, women rangers have been formed and Zimbabwe hopes the organisations will help eliminate poaching entirely.

Poacher Arrested In An Ambush In Lupane, Accomplices Escape

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Parks_%26_Wildlife_Management_Authority">Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZIMPARKS)</a>‘s spokesperson, Tinashe Farawo, has announced the death of one of the authority’s officers who was trampled to death by an elephant in Victoria Falls.
Farawo did not reveal details surrounding the incident. He said:

It is with great sadness that a 51-year-old anti-poaching officer has been trampled to death by an elephant in Victoria Falls. @Zimparks &amp; @PoliceZimbabwe are on the ground.

Human-wildlife conflicts are not new in areas near national parks.
Just last month, a Zimbabwean man from Kwekwe in the Midlands province was trampled to death while trying to take a selfie with elephants. The elephants seriously injured a second person who had to be admitted to the hospital.
ZIMPARKS reported that the elephant that charged at him was one of several that had escaped from a conservation area in central Zimbabwe.

51-Year-Old Anti-Poaching Officer Trampled To Death In Victoria Falls

A Zimbabwean man from Kwekwe in the Midlands province was trampled to death while trying to take a selfie with elephants.
The Chronicle reports that the elephant that charged at him was one of several that had escaped from a conservation area in central Zimbabwe.
Reports say the man was gored and dragged several metres by a large elephant before being trampled to death in a rural area outside of Kwekwe.
The identity of the man is not yet known.
The elephant was reportedly later put down by the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks).
A second person was reportedly seriously injured in the incident and has been hospitalised at Kwekwe General Hospital.
In another incident, ZimParks also reportedly put down a second elephant after it was seen heading towards residential areas. 
The incident comes after around seven elephants were reportedly spotted in the area by locals.
Zimparks Wednesday said it had put down two of the jumbos and driven the rest back to the Black Rhino Conservancy where they are said to have escaped from.
Zimparks spokesperson, Mr Tinashe Farawo said the two jumbos were taken down as they were now posing danger to human life. Said Mr Farawo:

There were two incidents, one was when our rangers had to take down an elephant after it trampled upon a man and injured another. The man is said to have been taking selfies with the jumbo when he was attacked by the animal.

In the second incident, the jumbo was gunned down in the Chicago area as it was wandering towards residential areas.
Farawo added that the rangers were still monitoring the situation, but it is now considered “under control.”
He urged members of the public to report such incidents and to avoid provoking the animals.

Zimbabwean Man Trampled While Taking A Selfie With Elephants

Zimbabwe will soon sell the right to shoot as many as 500 elephants this year in a bid to assist with conservation.
Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZIMPARKS) spokesperson, Tinashe Farawo, told CNN Thursday that declining tourism revenue owing to the coronavirus pandemic was among the main reasons for the move. Farawo said:
<blockquote>We eat what we kill. We have a budget of about $25 million for our operations which is raised — partly — through sports hunting, but you know tourism is as good as dead at the moment due to the coronavirus pandemic.</blockquote>

Zimbabwe Will Soon Sell Rights To Shoot Elephants

Disjointed body parts believed to be that of Mr Roy Dikinya, a 40-year-old Harare man who fell into a gorge at the Victoria Falls Rainforest on New Year’s Day, have been found trapped at the Danger Point.
Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Authority (Zimparks) spokesperson Mr Tinashe Farawo confirmed that the discovery of the body parts adding that they are trapped between the rocks down the gorge.
He said Mr Dikinya slipped and fell from one of the viewing points of the Victoria Falls. He said:
<blockquote>Since Friday when the tragedy occurred, we have been searching for him, and our search teams in collaboration with police managed to locate his body yesterday (Saturday) late afternoon.
We haven’t been able to positively identify him because of the location where the body is trapped, but we are certain that it his body.
The body parts were spotted about 100 metres down and are trapped between rocks. Right now we are in communication with other security experts including the army to try and find ways of retrieving the body.</blockquote>
Mr Farawo, however, said the search has not affected entry to the Victoria Falls as “it still remains business as usual for our tourists.”
Meanwhile, investigations are underway to identify a second unidentified body of a male adult found floating down the gorges around rapid number 8 down the Victoria Falls.

Victoria Falls Accident: Tourist's Remains Found

A Harare holidaymaker who was on holiday with his family fell into a Victoria Falls gorge on New Year’s day, Times Live reports. According to the publication by 5 PM yesterday, rescuers had not yet located him.
ZimParks’s Tinashe Farawo told the publication that:
<blockquote>There was an incident this afternoon when a 40-year-old man fell into the gorge around 2.30pm. We are on the ground searching for him,</blockquote>
According to The Zambezi River Authority (ZRA), an estimated 513 cubic metres per second were flowing into the Victoria Falls as of December 23 2020.
A similar incident occurred at the resort town 16 years ago in 2005 when a man fell into the gorge as he was trying to retrieve his spectacles after dropping them.

Harare Man Falls Into A Victoria Falls Gorge

Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) rangers, were reportedly involved in a gun battle with suspected poachers in Chirisa Game Park in Gokwe which resulted in 2 suspected poachers getting killed in the shoutout, The Herald reports.
The incident was confirmed by the ZimParks spokesperson Tinash Farawo who said:
<blockquote>It is unfortunate that two suspected poachers were shot dead in Chirisa Game Park,” he said. “These are protected areas, and we have always been saying protected areas are no go areas, if we see you in a protected area we are left with no option. No one is allowed in these areas, and these people will be armed which leaves us with no option. Investigations are being done following the incident that happened at the Chirisa Game Park.</blockquote>
Farawo also took the time to warn poachers off and said they were using advanced technology like drowns to survey their parks:
<blockquote>We are making use of advanced technology to detect poachers. We are detecting more because we have employed technology and most of the incursions can now be seen just by the click of a button.
With the use of drones we are now better equipped to detect poachers, and we are also able to deploy appropriately if there are any incursions.</blockquote>
According to ZimParks, 5 poachers have already been killed this year and there have been 15 shootout incidences between park rangers and suspected poachers.

Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Authority (ZimParks) has opened a number of its parks to local tourists following the government’s decision to open the tourism industry for local tourists, the Chronicle reports.
Speaking to the publication ZimParks spokesperson Tinashe Farawo said the lockdown has almost crippled them as they rely heavily on tourists to fund their conservation activities:
<blockquote>Last week Government gave us the greenlight to open our national parks to visitors, so we have made a decision to open most of the parks.
We rely mostly on tourism to fund our conservation activities and this includes law enforcement as well as reacting to human/wildlife conflict incidents.
Over the past three months, we have been facing serious challenges in terms of responding within reasonable time, to human/wildlife conflict incidents because we were not generating income.</blockquote>
Farawo also said ZimParks was putting safety measures in place to ensure that their parks will not be COVID-19 hotspots:
<blockquote>We are putting mechanisms in place to ensure that our people will be safe, we don’t want to be a source of Covid-19. All our staff are undergoing the mandatory Covid-19 test so that they are ready to receive visitors.
We are busy regularly sanitising areas, which visitors patronise, we will also be doing the basic screening checks for our visitors.We want to assure visitors that as ZimParks, we are doing all reasonably possible to guarantee their safety and thus urge them to visit our parks.</blockquote>
The government opened up the tourism sector to locals last week but did not lift the ban on intercity travel.

ZimParks Opens Its Parks To Local Tourists

Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) rangers reportedly killed a suspected rhino poacher during a shoot-out at Save Valley Conservancy in Masvingo Province on Monday last week.
The incident was conformed by ZimParks spokesperson Mr Tinashe Farawo who alleged that two other suspected poachers escaped leaving their firearms at the scene. He said:
<blockquote>It is unfortunate that one suspected poacher was shot dead in Save and two other suspected poachers managed to escape. We were able to recover a rifle that we suspect they were using, a silencer and four rounds of ammunition.</blockquote>
Farawo also said that rangers are in high alert following previous shoot-outs which claimed the lives of some rangers. He added that rangers resort to using force since it is difficult to arrest someone who has firearms.
He also said that the incumbent matter was still under police investigation and no arrests had been made.

Suspected Poacher Killed In Shoot-Out, Colleagues Escape

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Masvingo">Masvingo</a> reservoir Tugwi Mukosi has been gazetted as a recreational facility and will be awarded a Lake status soon, The Herald reports.
According to the publication, the name change is expected to spike the development of tourism which will benefit surrounding communities.
Speaking to the publication, ZimParks Spokesperson Tinashe Farawo said:

We understand that the process to gazette the dam (Tugwi-Mukosi) as a recreational facility is already underway and once that happens it will become Lake Tugwi-Mukosi just like other bigger national dams in the country. 
That process (gazetting as a recreational facility) will undoubtedly lead to development of tourism projects at the dam because currently it is still under full control of Zinwa.

According to Mr Farawo, after the dam has been gazzated as a lake, a proposed game park around Tugwi-Mukosi will start.

Tugwi-Mukosi To Be Awarded Lake Status

The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) has granted permits for the relocation of 600 elephants from <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Save_Valley_Conservancy" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Save Valley Conservancy</a> to three national parks at a cost of US$3 million.
2 000 impalas, 50 buffaloes, 40 giraffes, a pack of wild dogs and two prides of lions are also to be translocated. Speaking to The Herald on Monday, ZimParks spokesman Tinashe Farawo said:
<blockquote>The elephants and other animals are set to be translocated to <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Chizarira_National_Park" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Chizarira National Park</a> (in Gokwe), Sapi National Park (a private game park in Mashonaland West near Mana Pools) and Mavuradonha Wilderness Safari Area (a private game park in Mashonaland Central).</blockquote>
Farawo said that the reason why the animals are being moved away from Save Valley Conservancy is that they have exceeded their ecological carrying capacity.
The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Hwange_National_Park" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Hwange National Park</a> is also under threat as it now has 53 000 elephants while it should handle 14 700 jumbos.
