A Zimbabwean healthcare worker has been awarded more than £25 000 after she was fired by bosses only days after arriving in the UK when they found out she was pregnant.
The <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12314927/Healthcare-worker-30-came-UK-Zimbabwe-better-version-awarded-25-000-employment-tribunal-sacked-pregnant.html">Daily Mail</a> reported on Wednesday, 19 July that Felicity Khupe did not tell bosses she was pregnant when offered employment.
She left Zimbabwe for Britain in 2022 while expecting her second child after a UK firm sponsored her to come.
The 30-year-old was fired after they found she was six months along on her second day.
Khupe then sued Comforting Hands Recruitment for unfair dismissal and maternity discrimination and a tribunal said she “missed out on the excitement of being a mother” and now “lives in fear of being deported”.
The company, based in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, trains staff for deployment to residential homes and nursing homes across Yorkshire, East Riding and the North East.
Giving evidence to the tribunal, Khupe said when she said she was pregnant, the care coordinator said it was a bit tricky and she needed to talk to the director about it.
She said the director visited her the next day, telling her that “unfortunately” because of her pregnancy she could not continue working there. Said Khupe:

[She told me] she was cancelling her Course of Sponsorship so I have to go back to Zimbabwe and I have to do it as soon as possible as I would be given 30 days by the Home Office after which my visa would be cancelled.

Khupe further told the tribunal that she left company accommodation the following Saturday, just one week after arriving from Zimbabwe.
She said she would have taken six months of unpaid maternity leave if she had been able to keep her job, from October 2022 until April this year.

UK: Zimbabwean Healthcare Worker Fired For Being Pregnant Awarded £25 000 Compensation

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has extended by another six months the tribunal investigating suspended Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) commissioner John Makamure.
The three-member tribunal is chaired by retired High Court judge Justice Maphios Cheda. The other members of the tribunal are Harare lawyer Charles Warara and Regai Thandiwe Hove.
It was established on 21 October 2022 to investigate whether Makamure failed to disclose his involvement in political activities, which is inconsistent with the duties and functions of a commissioner.
The tribunal will also investigate whether Makamure directed one Lee Sung to fund his political campaign in Gokwe in return for his protection.
Mnangagwa extended the tribunal in terms of a Presidential proclamation gazetted as Statutory Instrument 30 of 2023 which reads in part:

Now, therefore, under, and by virtue of the powers vested in the President as aforesaid, I do hereby; by this proclamation amend Proclamation 4 of 2022, published in Statutory Instrument 172 of 2022, by insertion in paragraph (d) of the words ‘with an option of an extension of six (6) months after expiry of the initial five months.

Mnangagwa Extends Makamure Tribunal By Another Six Months

Local Government and Public Works Minister July Moyo has appointed a four-member tribunal to probe the allegations of misconduct against six suspended Chitungwiza Municipality CCC councillors.
Moyo said Chitungwiza Municipality would bear the costs of the inquiry.
The councillors are former mayor Lovemore Maiko, former deputy mayor Musa Makweza, CCC chief whip Richard Chamutsa, Peter Matiringe, Kudakwashe John and Chengetai Nyagondo.
The six were suspended on 10 October after they convened an “illegal” meeting on 07 October where Maiko was reinstated as mayor.
Chitungwiza had been without a mayor since March this year when Maiko was recalled by the Douglas Mwonzora-led MDC-T.
Efforts to hold elections to replace Maiko failed to take place since March after Harare Provincial Affairs and Devolution secretary Tafadzwa Muguti, acting mayor Kiven Mutimbanyoka and more recently a ZANU PF councillor Reginald Mashingaidze approached the High Court to block the move.
The councillors, however, went ahead and re-elected Maiko on 7 October leading to their arrest for convening an illegal council meeting.
Minister Moyo said a tribunal to investigate the CCC councillors would be chaired by Advocate Rachael Chibaya. Wrote Moyo:

Pursuant to the suspension, in terms of Section 114A of the Local Government Laws Amendment of 2016, I hereby appoint you as member of a tribunal to look into allegations of misconduct levelled against the councillors.
