Prominent Bulawayo surgeon Dr Kelvin Tendai Kaseke, who was based at United Bulawayo Hospitals has died. He was 44.
According to United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH), Acting Clinical Director Dr Harrison Rambanapasi, Dr Kaseke died at Avenues Clinic in Harare.
He was seeking medical treatment after developing an illness. Said Dr Rambanapasi:

He passed on at around midnight. He suffered a short illness, he fell ill about two weeks ago and had to seek treatment.
He developed an emergency while he was there, where he was bleeding in the head.
He also was suffering from hypertension, which likely contributed to his condition.
It is unfortunate that he failed to respond to treatment and succumbed to the illness.
</blockquote>
He said Dr Kaseke’s death is a blow to the medical fraternity. Said Dr Rambanapasi:
<blockquote>
He was a senior surgeon at UBH. He held one of the highest offices in the history of Zimbabwe’s medical history.
UBH has lost a brilliant surgeon, his family too. He was a loving and responsible man.
The greatest blow is on the medical fraternity. I personally worked with him and I gained a lot of knowledge and expertise from him. I must say I am truly gutted by his death.

Renowned United Bulawayo Hospitals Surgeon Dies

The United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) is set to open an obstetric fistula clinic. The clinic will be the first such health facility in the southern region of the country. The construction of the clinic was funded by the United Nations Development Fund (UNDP).
The UBH acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mr Richard Sithole revealed in an interview that the clinic was targeted at helping women with urinary incontinence problems. He said:
<blockquote>UNDP gave us these funds to put infrastructure and we are almost complete with the structure. This is the first clinic to be put in a public hospital in the southern region as we have one in Chinhoyi.
This surgery is critical for women because it’s a condition that many women suffer from but they have nowhere to be treated. Private hospitals that offer such health services are expensive for an ordinary patient so this has come as a rescue for members of the public.</blockquote>
Mr Sithole said that most women are not aware that the condition needs medical attention. He said:
<blockquote>The majority of women with this condition do not know that it is something that should be treated. When they come for some other treatment like pregnancy check, through comprehensive screening, medical practitioners discover that the women have such conditions and they are referred for treatment.</blockquote>
Sithole said that the clinic is likely to be opned this year. He also said that the clinic has two theatres, one for operations and the other for other maternal services.

UBH Set To Open New Clinic, First In Southern Region

Bulawayo is set to have another hospital to ease pressure on Mpilo Central and United Bulawayo Hospitals.
Bulawayo Provincial Affairs Minister Judith Ncube said the hospital will be in Luveve suburb and offer primary health care. She declined to give a date for commencement of construction work. She said some logistics have to be put in place first. Ncube said consultations were underway with potential land developers to map the way forward. Said Ncube:
<blockquote>We want to engage stakeholders including residents who should give an input to what exactly they want from the hospital. We need another hospital to help decongest Mpilo and UBH which are currently tackling minor health issues. Ideally these two hospitals are meant to cater for conditions that need specialists for five provinces.</blockquote>

New Hospital To Be Constructed In Bulawayo

United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) is expected to resume non-emergency surgeries after it suspended them as they awaited delivery of pain killer, pethidine.
UBH chief executive officer Ms Nonhlanhla Ndlovu yesterday said,
<blockquote>It was a market issue and we had to attend to emergency cases only because our supplies had dwindled. We are expecting supplies of both pethidine and morphine this week so that we resume normal operations.</blockquote>
Due to the current economic environment, public health institutions are struggling to survive impacting negatively on their operations particularly drug stocks. Last month, Harare Central Hospital also temporarily suspended non-emergency surgeries due to shortage of the same pain killers and antibiotics.
