The People’s Patriotic Party, an <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">opposition party</a> in Zimbabwe, has informed the <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">United Nations</a> Secretary-General, Mr. Antonio Guterres, of their decision to boycott the country’s upcoming <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">harmonised elections</a> on August 23, 2023. The party claims that the elections will not be conducted in a fair and transparent environment.
In their letter to Mr. Guterres, the People’s <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">Patriotic Party</a> leader, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zvaringeni_Samuel_Chasi/">Zvaringeni Samuel Chasi</a>, stated that the elections lack the representation of civil rights and the general masses of Zimbabwe. The party believes that the current situation in Zimbabwe is similar to the period between 1979 and 1980, when the <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">United Nations Security Council</a> passed resolutions 445 and 448.
The party claims that their independence lies in the hands of their forefathers and ancestors who fought for the liberation of Zimbabwe, but their aspirations have never been realised. The People’s Patriotic Party accuses the ruling party, ZANU PF, of looting the country’s resources and implementing <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">genocidal massacres</a> against citizens.
The letter also highlights the atrocities committed by ZANU PF, including the <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">Gukurahundi massacres</a> of 1983-87, which resulted in the deaths of “±40,000 people.” The party claims that ZANU PF’s <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">junta regime</a> has forced millions of citizens into exile as refugees or asylum seekers.
In a letter seen by Pindula News, the People’s Patriotic Party justifies their decision to boycott the elections as a stand against the terrorist actions of ZANU PF. They believe that participating in <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">fraudulent elections</a> would be a betrayal of the citizens of Zimbabwe. Reads the letter in part:
<blockquote>
The following grounds listed below and brought to your attention, sustain the resolution in boycotting the puppet elections;
1] The Electoral Reforms (attached)we demanded and castigated for were considered to be ‘redundant’ where as power being deprived from citizens we proposed public consultations, gazette and referendum being a common denominator for all the stakeholders.
2] Dictatorship is at reign whereas harmonised elections were introduced as monopoly. Its paramount importance to hold disbanded elections with consideration given to the humanitarian crisis upon the citizens of Zimbabwe and failure to hold peaceful and free elections.To curb violence, conflicts and disputes separate Presidential Elections were key for 2023 together with and Abolishment of Senate serving a derail in impeachment process.
3] The Monthlanthe Commission of Inquiry on 1 August 2018 with its reports and recommendations led by Former South African President as arbitrator were nullified with zero implementations regardless of military shootings inflicted upon defenceless citizens who lost their lives. No guarantee is assured to citizens’ safety if the elections are not Monitored and Supervised by the UN.
4]Despite opposition winning resoundingly 2008/2018, the Judiciary is captured with incentives such that petitions referred to court are lost with endorsements from Sadc and AU such they sympathise with their fellow revolutionary parties in fraudulent elections as they share the same ideology, philosophy and doctrine.
5]Delimitation Boundaries were conducted by Zanupf not Zimbabwe Electoral Commission alongside its Joint Operations Command aimed at segregation and annihilation of opposition command centres with amnesia to the electorate.
6] The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission is partisan not independent with appointed immediate family members directly biologically related to Zanupf presidium aimed to manipulate election results. The same officials participate in active politics in violation of constitution of Zimbabwe witnesseth by their engagement in primary elections and functions of #Zanupf.
7].Voters Roll is systematically controlled not publicly availed and released in time to all stakeholders with captured biometric data being used by #Zanupf in violation of constitution in their internal primary and scheduled elections with estimated ±40% Registered Electorate revoked on Voters Role by virtue of clause 5.
8] Selective application of the law with harsh penalties, incarceration of opposition leaders and activists without bail or trial and victimisation of their immediate family members targeted to instil fear to opposition is not resolved with particular mention to Job Sikhala together with Jacob Ngarivhume lest we forget the youthful generation in detention centres.
9] Nomination Court fees was autocratically inflated aimed in reduction of opposition parties and candidates not eligible for political parties funding with only ±1% or equilibrium of at least #3 Political Organisations with potential access to funding and fielding of required threshold of candidates thus also directly reducing the number of participants, observers, agents from other parties in the final ballot counting routine. Balance of ±120 political parties face risk of extinction based on their ideology and principles
10] In reference to Nomination Court process, stipulated in clause 9, the technicality of less than #3 parties fielding candidates is aimed to disqualify opposition candidates, in this particular case the Citizens Coalition Change who face a threat on infiltration and duplication of candidates by bogus Forever Association of Zimbabwe (hereinafter referenced as FAZ a military affiliate aimed to manipulate electoral system to favour of Zanupf)
11]The Draconian measures in clause 5, 9 and 10 indicate falsified victory by Zanupf aim to technically knockout opposition representative of national interests with a proclamation of being unopposed in selected constituencies and boundaries, equivalent of estimated ±33.3 % both local authority and parliament from vacant seats.
12] The fixed 2nd day of October 2023 runoff date in the event of no winner 23rd August 2023 is a decoy and theatricality in congruent to nomination court filings which were calculated at misleading stakeholders with reference to clause 11 where propaganda with state assisted media in the course to the final nail in the coffin against democracy the cartel junta remains with odds of ± 20 % to acquire the mandate 51% thresh hold to maintaining the reign of judges.
13] The Patriotic Bill introduced now snatches the freedom of speech citing zero tolerance of opposition and any utterances from such being treason with indefinite imprisonment and an augmentation of dictatorship depriving citizens their rights to in gathering and social media contributions.
14]Headman and Chiefs are being instructed to force all their kraals to vote for Zanupf or else will face eviction in their communal lands which is unconstitutional with a vote pattern targeted from each polling station with after spiced effects of delimitation exercised in clause 5.
15] an estimated personnel of ±12 000 Joint Operations Command is in full deployment nationwide to the core of grassroots polling stations, courtesy by aide of FAZ in clause 10 with objective of coordinating the election in partisan manner to influence election result and outcome in favour of #ZanuPf from the 210 constituences,1970 wards and approximate *10 970 polling stations not convincingly being publicly availed with only non-existent stations in some instances and duplications.
16] In the Presidential Bid for 2023,the delimitation in clause 5 and use of voters roll in clause 7 brings to gravitas the explanatory in clause 15 where as the voter turnout with most citizens deprived of Diaspora vote reducing to estimated ± 40 % with manipulated results whereas from the fixed polling stations designed to hold maximum of 1500 voters ,the FAZ expertise aims to achieve 200 – 800 votes drawn from urban to rural votes with aide of captured rural leadership cited in clause 14,thus {ie} 200 x 10970 polling station based voters can induce and secure a 2,2 mil votes / ±60% victory for #ZanuPf fraudulently in a low voter turnout with such figures inflated in uncontested Zanupf ‘stronghold’ areas as stratagem.
17] In the event opposition candidates are succefully nominated and approved to stand in the courts, a landslide victory by in this case will be on the cards for Citizens Coalition Change the only representative of potential opposition and mantle of democracy in the scheduled elections which may not be a favourable result for Zanupf ready to unleash violence at all costs despite never having faced retaliation or rebellion. Therefore its tantamount for the United Nations to supervise these fraudulent elections without freedom of movement to campaign and media.
18] There is high risk to SADC Refugees/Asylum beneficiaries being deprived of their universal rights to be driven home against their will to vote in a fixed election which does not alter a revolution but retains the junta regime while citizens are used as bait in xenophobic attacks. In as much as Zimbabweans wish to be in their native land, the environment in their home country is not lucrative of human rights.
19] Various sectors from health, education, energy, roads, water and sanitation could have been prioritised with equipment whereas an estimated total ± USD 10 Billion is being used by political stakeholders in a hyperinflation country with ordinary citizens penniless and succumbing to poverty whilst politically funding is accessible in the scramble for power.
20] The objectives, philosophy and cardinal pillars of People’s Patriotic Party outlined in its constitution are not represented in this primitive election which does not value its citizens or founding principles where one party solely determines the fact of 15 million citizens .Patriotism is not pledging allegiance to #Zanupf but the love of one’s country with its inhabitants than taking citizens as lifeless objects disguised as voting statistic in personal quests.
21] Political Dialogue within the boundaries of Zimbabwe has beyond unreasonable doubt proved deceptive to citizens with Unity Accords-1987 ,Global Political Agreements- 2008, Monthlathe Commission- 2018. The Crisis in Zimbabwe is beyond any local or regional negotiations with exclusion of perhaps Lancaster House Agreements of 2023 but imperative to value the traditions and customs of Zimbabwe as its sole custodians are the chief curators on this subject having risen to liberate their kingdom, not pens and guns used by one regime past 43 years.
Boycott of the Elections does not signify failure to defend the Vote of 2023 but the lack of environment that allows fairness and transparency. These freedoms we will fight, side by side, throughout our lives until we have won our liberty!

Zimbabwe Opposition Writes To UN Explaining Decision To Boycott August 2023 Elections

The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations says it is ready to assist farmers in Matabeleland South Province in managing rangeland degradation.
Rangeland degradation is a decrease in plant species diversity, plant height, vegetation cover and plant productivity.
FAO Zimbabwe International resilience specialist Alexander Carr said rangeland productivity has declined, leading to reduced carrying capacity for livestock.
He urged the Government to ensure that policies and regulations are in place to support rangeland conservation while FAO equips farmers with the skills and knowledge to achieve this.
Carr was speaking during a meeting with some of the farmers in Bulawayo on Friday last week. He said:

Rangelands play a crucial role in supporting the livelihoods of pastoral communities, providing grazing land for livestock and a source of income from meat and dairy production hence they should be of utmost priority be preserved.
Changes in temperature and precipitation patterns have altered the distribution and abundance of plant and animal species, leading to changes in ecosystem dynamics.
As a result, rangeland productivity has declined, leading to reduced carrying capacity for livestock and lower yields of meat and dairy products.
This may include practices such as rotational grazing, improved water management as well as the use of alternative sources of livelihoods to reduce pressure on rangeland resources.

Speaking at the same event, the permanent secretary for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Matabeleland South, Latiso Dhlamini-Maseko said:

By restoring degraded rangelands, we can increase their productivity and resilience, improve the livelihoods of pastoral communities, safeguard biodiversity and reduce the risk of land degradation and desertification.

Matabeleland South Province receives low seasonal rainfall which makes the rangeland highly susceptible to degradation.

United Nations' FAO Pledges To Assist Farmers In Matabeleland South

The global population reached 8 billion on 15 November 2022, with India projected to surpass China as the world’s most populous country in 2023.
In a statement issued prior to the milestone, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said:

This year’s World Population Day falls during a milestone year when we anticipate the birth of the Earth’s eight billionth inhabitant.
This is an occasion to celebrate our diversity, recognize our common humanity, and marvel at advancements in health that have extended lifespans and dramatically reduced maternal and child mortality rates.
At the same time, it is a reminder of our shared responsibility to care for our planet and a moment to reflect on where we still fall short of our commitments to one another.

<a href="https://www.un.org/en/desa/world-population-reach-8-billion-15-november-2022">According to the United Nations</a>, the global population is growing at its slowest rate since 1950, having fallen under 1 per cent in 2020.
The latest projections by the United Nations suggest that the world’s population could grow to around 8.5 billion in 2030 and 9.7 billion in 2050.
It is projected to reach a peak of around 10.4 billion people during the 2080s and to remain at that level until 2100.
More than half of the projected increase in the global population up to 2050 will be concentrated in eight countries: the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and the United Republic of Tanzania, said the United Nations.
Countries of sub-Saharan Africa are expected to contribute more than half of the increase anticipated through 2050.

World Population Reaches 8 Billion

President Emmerson Mnangagwa left the country on Monday night for New York, United States of America, to attend the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
This year’s UNGA will be the first to be held face to face following a two-year break because of COVID-19-related travel restrictions.
For the last two years, UNGA has been taking place virtually through pre-recorded speeches.
Mnangagwa was seen off at the Robert Mugabe International Airport by Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, Cabinet Ministers, senior Government officials and service chiefs.
He is expected to address the UNGA during the course of this week.
UNGA 77 which is running under the theme, “A watershed moment: transformative solutions to interlocking challenges”, started on Monday, 19 September.
In a press briefing on 14 September, UN secretary-general António Guterres said dialogue and debate are key to finding solutions to the challenges facing the world which include war, hunger and climate change, among others. He said:

Our world is blighted by war, battered by climate chaos, scarred by hate, and shamed by poverty, hunger and inequality.
As fractures deepen and trust evaporates, we need to come together around solutions. People need to see results in their everyday lives, or they will lose faith in their governments and institutions, and they will lose hope in the future.
That hope can indeed only come through the dialogue and debate that are the beating heart of the UN and that must prevail next week against all divisions.

Mnangagwa Off To New York For UN General Assembly

A United Nations official on Tuesday indirectly rejected claims by Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Nelson Chamisa that he was in talks with the UN to supervise Zimbabwe’s general elections next year to ensure transparency and fairness.
Chamisa, who rejected the outcome of the 2018 presidential election, citing rigging allegations, has in recent weeks claimed the CCC was arranging UN supervision of the 2023 harmonised elections.
He made the latest claim at his party’s “Thank You” rally in Chinhoyi on Sunday.
UN Resident and Humanitarian Co-ordinator for Zimbabwe, Edward Kallon, told <a href="https://newziana.co.zw/2022/09/13/un-rubbishes-chamisa-claims/">New Ziana</a> that the UN required a mandate from either the General Assembly or its Security Council to supervise elections in a member country.
He said the UN last supervised an election in 1989 in Namibia when the country gained independence. Said Kallon:

UN electoral supervision requires a mandate from the General Assembly or the Security Council.
It has been undertaken in the context of decolonization, and at the request of the relevant government.
The most recently UN supervised elections were in Namibia in 1989 in a peculiar context.

Kallon said technical assistance was now the most common type of support given to member states by the UN. He said:

The United Nations provides different types of electoral assistance. Technical assistance is the most common form of support provided to Member States.
In Zimbabwe, UNDP has been providing support to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission since 2016, through the ZIM-ECO (ZEC capacity-building) project, which provides technical support to the electoral process in Zimbabwe.

UN Official Rejects Chamisa Claims

The government has criticised some civil servants who are directly soliciting United Nations agencies for invitations to attend meetings in New York.
In an internal memorandum seen by Pindula News, Agriculture Permanent Secretary, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/John_Basera">John Basera</a> condemned the conduct which he described as “undiplomatic”. 
Basera said the United Nations recently expressed concern over the development. Reads the memo addressed to all directors and department heads:

<h2>CONCERN OVER THE CONDUCT OF ZIMBABWE GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS TRAVELLING TO NEW YORK</h2>
The matter above refers.
The United Nations Secretariat has complained to our Mission in New York over the conduct of some Government Officials who directly contact the Secretariat soliciting to attend UN meetings.
The practice is unprocedural and undiplomatic and, therefore, Government Officials are hereby directed to desist from such behaviour.
It is also of concern that there are other scenarios where delegates travelling to New York for UN sessions end up attending the sessions virtually or travel to the sessions out of time, and attend closing sessions
This is unnecessary wastage of resources.
In line with the pronouncement by his Excellency the President (Emmerson Mnangagwa) on the need to apply prudence when undertaking foreign trips, officials in the ministry are called upon to take note of the observations above in order not to bring the country’s name into disrepute.

United Nations Complains Over Zimbabwean Officials Who Solicited To Attend UN Meetings

Human rights activist <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Farai_Maguwu">Farai Maguwu</a> says Zimbabwe is on the verge of a civil war due to the current wave of political violence which he says need to be contained.
Maguwu speaks after reports that ruling ZANU PF party supporters recently attacked supporters of the opposition Citizens Coalitions for Change (CCC) led by Nelson Chamisa.
Tensions between and within the two parties have been rising in the past twenty-four months as the country heads for elections scheduled for sometime next year.
Maguwu, who made the remarks in an interview with NewsDay yesterday, noted that violence witnessed during recent by-elections was a shadow of what was to come next year. He said:

This is an election that should not take place and this is an election we are not prepared to host. Zimbabwe has been in permanent election mode since the year 2000. The more elections we have, the deeper our economy sinks and the more people flee the country as economic refugees. Zimbabwe elections are not meant to choose the leaders but are meant to tick the box.
There should be no elections for the next 10 years and a transitional government. We need to weed out corruption and put the real criminals looting from the private sector and government in jail.
Zimbabwe needs time to heal, the violence we have begun to see in by-elections, it’s just a picture of what is going to come in the upcoming elections, we might see a mini civil war.

Violence has continued despite open denunciation by political elites.

Human Rights Activist Farai Maguwu Says Zimbabwe Is On The Verge Of A Civil War

CCC leader Nelson Chamisa wants the United Nations (UN), the African Union (AU) and SADC to supervise Zimbabwe’s next elections scheduled to be held in 2023 to avoid the possibility of a contested outcome.
Addressing a “Thank You” rally at Nyamhunga Stadium in Kariba on Sunday, Chamisa also urged his supporters to vote in large numbers to make vote rigging difficult. He said:
<blockquote>
We expect reforms to be done before elections, but even if they refuse, go in numbers and vote to make rigging impossible.
I am talking to the UN, SADC [Southern African Development Community] and AU [African Union] because the UN should be there, polling agents at every polling station and all eyes should be on the election.
The results should be traceable from the polling station to the national command centre and even the installation of the winner must be transparent.
Presidential election results should also be announced from the polling station and not take days before they are announced to avoid manipulation.
We do not want a situation where presidential results are kept a secret. Presidential results should not take five to six days like what is happening at the moment.
Results must be displayed at polling stations just like council and parliamentary results.
</blockquote>
Chamisa also criticised the manner in which Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) commissioners are appointed saying the process is open to manipulation. He said:
<blockquote>
We are looking into the ZEC issue because Mnangagwa is staffing it with his colleagues’ relatives for fear of losing the elections, but we do not care even if he becomes the chairperson of ZEC.
We want to win this election, we want to change Zimbabwe, we want to win big as long as you vote in numbers.

Zimbabwe has had a history of contested elections since the formation of the MDC in 1999.
In the last election, Chamisa refused to concede defeat to President Emmerson Mnangagwa, whom he accused of stealing victory in connivance with ZEC.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, 27 August, the ZANU PF candidate Spencer Tshuma won the Gokwe-Kabuyuni constituency seat after polling 10 727 votes against CCC candidate Costin Muguti who garnered 4 800 votes.

Mthwakazi Republic Party (MRP) youths on Wednesday begged the United Nations (UN) to intervene in Zimbabwe to protect them from alleged persecution by the government.
MRP accuses President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government of persecuting its members.
In March this year, Mnangagwa threatened to “shorten” the lives of MRP activists while addressing a ZANU PF rally in Chitungwiza.
Later in Gweru, the President described MRP as a “bunch of people possessed by Biblical demon Legion”.
Addressing journalists during a Press conference in Bulawayo, MRP youth league member Mudenda Chilumbo, said:

We demand the prosecution of living perpetrators of the Gukurahundi genocide by the intervention of the Criminal Court of Justice.
This will avert the barbaric systematic torture of people, especially Mthwakazi activists.
The perpetrators include Mnangagwa, Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga and Sydney Sekeramai, among others.
As MRP we believe that organisations like the UN have a possible provision in their charter to deal with the gross human rights abuses.
It should be known that our Mthwakazi people are ill-treated and justice should be done to avert future injustices.
</blockquote>
Chilumbo cited several incidences where Mnangagwa made threats against the Mthwakazi Republic Party. Chilumbo said:

We are disgruntled against the laws that are put in place to suppress our party. This follows the utterances that were made by Mnangagwa on March 23, when he was addressing a rally in Chitungwiza and he said he will shorten the lives of Mthwakazi activists.
Again on 23 June, when he was addressing locals at Bata Company in Gweru, he referred to Mthwakazi activists as possessed by a demon.
In Marondera, he repeated his threats through the prosecution of our members leading to the sentencing of MRP members to three years each.

He also demanded the release of the MRP9, that is, Welcome Moyo, Mongameli Xukuthwayo, Sibongile Mlotshwa, Latifa Banda, Busi Moyo, Livson Ncube, Nkosilathi Ncube, Maxwell Nkosi, Tinnos Nkomo and Ackim Ndebele who were jailed a combined 25 years.
Chilumbo alleged Bulawayo magistrate Tavengwa Sangster was under instruction from President Mnangagwa when he convicted the MRP activists.

MRP Calls For UN Intervention In Zimbabwe Over 'Persecution'

The security situation in Ukraine deteriorated rapidly following the launch of a Russian Federation military offensive on 24 February 2022. The armed violence escalated in at least eight oblasts (regions), including Kyivska oblast and the capital city of Kyiv, as well as in the eastern oblasts of Donetsk and Luhansk which were already affected by conflict.
The escalation of conflict has triggered an immediate and steep rise in humanitarian needs as essential supplies and services are disrupted and civilians flee the fighting. The UN estimates that 12 million people inside Ukraine will need relief and protection, while more than 4 million Ukrainian refugees may need protection and assistance in neighbouring countries in the coming months.
On 1 March 2022, the UN and humanitarian partners launched coordinated <a href="https://reliefweb.int/sites/reliefweb.int/files/resources/Ukraine%20Flash%20Appeal%202022.pdf">Flash Appeals</a> for a combined $1.7 billion to urgently deliver humanitarian support to people in Ukraine and refugees in neighbouring countries.
Within Ukraine, the plan requires $1.1 billion to meet the escalating humanitarian needs of more than six million people affected and displaced by military operations over the next three months. Outside the country, the UN requested $551 million to help Ukrainians who have fled across borders, principally to Poland, Hungary, Romania and Moldova.
<a href="https://www.un.org/sg/en/node/262085">Amin Awad</a>, the UN Crisis Coordinator for Ukraine <a href="https://ukraine.un.org/en/173985-statement-united-nations-crisis-coordinator-ukraine">called for an “immediate</a> humanitarian pause”, on 5 March, in the fighting between Russian and Ukrainian forces, as UN aid supplies continue to arrive in the country.

Russian Invasion Of Ukraine Has Created Dire Humanitarian Crisis - UN

Zimbabwean military officer, Major Winnet Zharare, has received the 2021 United Nations Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award.
Major Zharare received the award from UN Secretary-General António Guterres during a ceremony marking the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers on Thursday, 26 May. Guterres said in a tweet:

Through her work in South Sudan, Major Zharare has demonstrated the invaluable role of women in building trust, advocating for change &amp; forging peace.

She deployed to UNMISS in November 2020 and served in Bentiu, South Sudan, from 2021 to 2022.
Throughout her 17-month-long service, she advocated for gender parity and women’s participation, within her own ranks, among local military counterparts, and in host communities.
The United Nations “Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award” was created in 2016.
It recognizes the dedication and efforts of an individual military peacekeeper in promoting the principles of United Nations Security resolution 1325 (2000) on women, peace and security, as nominated by Heads and Force Commanders of United Nations peace operations.

Major Winnet Zharare Receives United Nations Peacekeeping Award

The United Nations (UN) has honoured a Zimbabwean soldier, Major Winnet Zharare, who recently completed her assignment as a peacekeeper with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).
Military Observer Major Zharare (39), will receive the 2021 United Nations Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award.
She will receive the award from Secretary-General António Guterres during a ceremony marking the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers on Thursday, 26 May.
Secretary-General António Guterres commended Major Zharare for her award. He said:

Major Zharare is a role model and a trailblazer. Through her service, she has demonstrated the invaluable role that women play in building trust, advocating for change and forging peace.
Her example shows how we will all gain with more women at the decision-making table and gender parity in peace operations.
</blockquote>
Major Zharare expressed her gratitude and pride for being selected to receive the award, which, she said, “motivates her to maintain her course towards gender equality”. She added:

My parents gave us equal opportunities with my brothers, so I believe that equal opportunities should be given to both men and women in all aspects of life.
</blockquote>

UN Honours Zimbabwean Soldier, Major Winnet Zharare

The United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator to Zimbabwe, Edward Kallon, has urged the Government to create a conducive environment that allows Zimbabweans who have emigrated to return home and contribute to the development of the country.
Kallon also implored western countries to remove targeted sanctions that they imposed on Zimbabwe at the turn of the millennium.
Kallon made the remarks while speaking at a media briefing in Bulawayo on Tuesday 26 April on the backdrop of the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace, celebrated annually on April 24
He said Zimbabwe should address human rights abuses and ensure free fair credible elections, among other things. Said Kallon:

I don’t think any Zimbabwean wants to go to another country and I would end by also encouraging the government to make sure they have an enabling environment facilitated for Zimbabweans to come back and rebuild this beautiful country.
You have the human resources, brilliant Zimbabweans who have common interests and natural endowment.
You need foreign direct investment but it is not going to come in the volumes required to push this country forward if sanctions are in place.
That’s why we are saying review sanctions. We call on the government to address human rights abuses, ensure free fair credible elections, open up civic space and encourage civic participation.
I’m sure Zimbabwe will be the Zimbabwe it used to be, a country so strategic with an endowment that it can make its people live a very, very comfortable life.
</blockquote>
In response, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Nick Mangwana deplored xenophobia, saying Zimbabwe is ready to assist its nationals in South Africa. Said Mangwana:

It’s really sad (that) we at this stage of African solidarity, unity, multilateral approach and borderlessness, I would say the affairs and situation where Africans are discriminated against by Africans.
It’s tragic that these xenophobia sentiments are being whipped and in some cases politicians.
Should there be any of our nationals who want any other type of support they should approach our embassy in South Africa and they will arrange to give the support that is needed.
</blockquote>
Earlier this month, Zimbabwean Elvis Nyathi was brutally murdered by a mob in Diepsloot, Johannesburg, for not having a passport.
South Africans blame foreigners for the high levels of crime and unemployment in that country.

UN Official Tells Zimbabwe To Address Human Rights Abuses

Zimbabwe has explained the rationale behind its decision to abstain from voting against Russia when the United Nations General Assembly put the Ukraine crisis for a vote on Wednesday.
The vote was 141 to 5, with 35 abstentions. It came after the 193-member assembly convened its first emergency session since 1997.
In a statement, the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Amon Murirwa, said Zimbabwe prefers dialogue between Russia and Ukraine, instead of sanctions as they will only worsen human suffering. The statement read:

As you are aware, there was a vote in the UN General Assembly yesterday 2 March 2022, on a resolution on Ukraine. Zimbabwe abstained in that vote.
We wish to assure you that Zimbabwe is a strong believer in the United Nations Charter and all its principles and purposes including the peaceful settlement of disputes.
The situation in Ukraine is a very complex one and is deeply rooted in the history and geopolitics of that region.
Zimbabwe believes that it is the duty of the international community not to make that situation more complex than it already is.
The International Community must tirelessly work towards the facilitation of dialogue aimed at finding a durable solution to the situation.
Zimbabwe is not convinced that the resolution adopted yesterday points in the direction of dialogue. On the contrary, it poured more fuel into the fire thus further complicating the situation.
As you know, Zimbabwe does not support the imposition of unilateral coercive measures or unilateral sanctions of any kind on any member state for that matter, as this is contrary to the United Nations Charter. Unilateral sanctions have never worked to resolve any situation.
On the contrary, sanctions unleash untold humanitarian crises and the human suffering of ordinary people.
Zimbabweans, have been victims of unilateral sanctions for over 20 years and would not wish this on anyone. Dialogue is the way forward.
Zimbabwe, therefore, commends the Russian Federation and Ukraine for initiating dialogue and urge them to intensify their efforts towards finding a durable solution to the conflict taking into account the security interests of both parties.
It is for these reasons that Zimbabwe abstained from the vote on the resolution on Ukraine in the UN General Assembly on 2 March 2022.

Zimbabwe Vigil Coalition yesterday published the Zimbabwe Vigil Diary which detailed the chaos that engulfed Zimbabwe these past few days and said it might come as a surprise to some that Zimbabwe has been elected to the United Nations Economic and Social Council despite the current economic and political turmoil in Zimbabwe:

Whatever Mnangagwa was praying for the other day we doubt it was for a walkout by doctors and nurses and the arrest of the Health Minister. Hardly anyone seems to have paid attention to the President’s national day of prayer. Perhaps they were too busy trying to get something to eat while avoiding being beaten up by police and soldiers.
Maybe Mnangagwa was praying that there won’t be a coup? Well someone answered by sending security forces into the city centres of Harare, Bulawayo and Kwekwe to make sure. This seems to be the view of presidential spokesman Charamba though other Zanu PF sources claimed it was merely to enforce the non-enforceable Covid lockdown.
But the Good Lord has stopped short of saving the economy. We can understand why. Not even the President can be allowed to let his family and friends steal a disproportionate amount of the country’s wealth. We must economise and make a little looting go a long way in these straitened times.
Health Minister Obadiah Moyo, facing charges of corruption, appears to have allowed overpayment of millions of dollars on Covid-19 equipment, benefitting Mnangagwa’s son Collins. No sooner do we get rid of Mugabe’s kids washing their watches in champagne and driving Lamborghinis than we get this ‘new dispensation’ . The scandal follows revelations that Mnangagwa’s ‘advisor’, tycoon Kuda Tagwirei, has made millions of dollars from a dodgy government deal involving buses bought from China (see: <a href="https://www.theindependent.co.zw/2020/06/19/mnangagwas-ally-pockets-us54m-in-fresh-bus-deal/)">Mnangagwa Ally Pockets $54 Million In Fresh Bus Deal)</a>
As for our valiant doctors and nurses and other civil servants, the latest ludicrous pay proposals can only encourage them to join in the looting since soon there will be no other way of surviving. The Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition has expressed its full support for the healthcare workers and called on the government to ‘seriously address the rampant corruption that has caused devastating effects on the country’s economy’. Don’t’ be surprised: the UN works in a mysterious way. Not so long ago it chose Saudi Arabia to chair a committee on human rights!

The United Nations (UN) yesterday dismissed as “nonsense” online media reports that it had approved the intervention of a multinational force to Zimbabwe.
The reports followed a visit by UN Under Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Mr Mark Lowcock, who committed $10 million. The United States is providing an additional $15 million for humanitarian assistance aimed at mitigating the effects of drought-induced food deficit. In an interview with The Herald yesterday, UN Resident coordinator Mr Bishow Parajuli said:
<blockquote>I asked myself whether I was dreaming when I read about it. It is not only nonsense, but absolutely nonsense. It is not even worth to get a response from us. That is totally unfounded and mischievous. That is very unfortunate.</blockquote>
