A 49-year-old man from Hwedza, Mashonaland East Province is on the run after allegedly killing his mother over allegations of witchcraft.
The suspect, Everisto Magaisa, reportedly attacked his mother Faustina Magaisa with an unknown object on Wednesday morning and left her unconscious.
He then informed his brother Francis, that he had assaulted their mother and left her unconscious.
Francis informed the village head who rushed and found the victim lying in a pool of blood.
Police were informed and and came and rushed her to Mt St Marys Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
ZRP seputy spokesperson for Mashonaland East Province Assistant Inspector Misheck Denhere confirmed the incident to The Herald. He said:
After assaulting his mother, he went to his brother’s homestead where he also indicated that he was looking for his cousin Jealous whom he accused of dating his wife some time back.
He also indicated that he was intending to confront his other brother whom he accused of telling him that he was a psychiatric person.
Mental illness is a significant concern in Zimbabwe and one of the biggest challenges the country faces is the lack of resources and funding for mental health services.
Another challenge is the stigma surrounding mental illness in Zimbabwe. 
Many people still believe that mental illness is a sign of weakness or spiritual possession, and this can prevent individuals from seeking help.
Economic hardship, unemployment, and poverty in Zimbabwe have contributed to a rise in mental health issues, including depression and anxiety.
The signs of mental illness include sudden or extreme shifts in mood, an increased desire to isolate oneself from friends and family, and unexplained aches and pains, headaches, fatigue, or other physical symptoms that do not have a clear medical cause.
Mentally ill people may experience thoughts of self-harm or suicide and abuse alcohol, drugs, or other substances.

Hwedza Man Kills Mum Over Allegations Of Witchcraft

Some villagers in Igusi Village in Ward 10, Nyamandlovu, have been threatened with eviction for refusing to consult witch hunters popularly known as “Tsikamutanda”.
The witch hunters claim to be on a mission to eradicate witchcraft by removing goblins from some of the homesteads and demand livestock and money as a form of payment.
Some villagers support the actions of Tsikamutandas but others are vehemently opposed to them.
One of the victims told <a href="https://cite.org.zw/villagers-threatened-with-eviction-for-refusing-to-consult-witch-hunters/">CITE</a> that she was given a 24-hour notice to vacate the village. She said:
<blockquote>
I was given 24-hour notice to leave the area as I refused to entertain the witch hunters.
I ended up going after being forced and they demanded a payment of US$400. I refused to pay that amount.
</blockquote>
She said after the incident, she was accosted by some villagers who demanded to know why she had refused to pay the Tsikamutandas.
Village head Grace Mpofu said her hands are tied over the issue, adding that people are not forced to consult the self-proclaimed witch hunters. Said Mpofu:

They came through the headman and the chief, my role was to only welcome them. If people want them, there is nothing I can do.
</blockquote>
… I did not hear that, those are lies. If someone doesn’t want to see the self-proclaimed witch hunters they are not forced, we announced that.
Ward councillor, Johannes Sibanda confirmed the eviction threats saying it a violation of villagers’ rights. He said:
<blockquote>
This thing is being controlled by the headman, they don’t inform me about anything but the matter is true, this is what is happening in our area.
As a councillor, I tried to reason with the headman but as it is I have been failing to get hold of him.
To me this is nonsense, I have even tried to teach people about human rights but it seems the village head is the one threatening them.
I also advised people that anyone evicted should come to me before leaving, but so far no one has been evicted, there are just threats only.

It is a punishable offense to employ a witch hunter under the Witchcraft Suppression Act Chapter 9:19. Section 5 states that:
<blockquote>
Any person who employs or solicits any other person (a) to name or indicate any other person as a wizard or witch; or (b) to name or indicate by means of witchcraft or by application of any of the tests mentioned in the paragraph (b) of section eight or by the use of any non-natural means any person as the perpetrator of any alleged crime or other act complained of or (c) to advise him or any other person how, by means of witchcraft or by any non-natural means whatsoever, the perpetrator of any alleged or other act complained of may be discovered; shall be guilty of any offence and liable to a fine not exceeding fifty dollars or, in default of payment to imprisonment for a period not exceeding six months.
</blockquote>

Villagers Threatened With Eviction For Avoiding Tsikamutanda

A family from Emahlabathini Village in Inyathi, Matabeleland North Province, is now living in fear after they found blood randomly sprinkled on their doorsteps together with a white blood-soaked cloth with the names of the whole family written on it.
A family member Taffy Khabo (38), told <a href="https://www.bmetro.co.zw/scare-as-family-finds-blood-sprinkled-on-doorstep-white-blood-soaked-cloth-with-names-of-the-whole-family-inscribed-on-it/">B-Metro</a> that the incident occurred on Thursday last week. He said:
<blockquote>
The whole family is now living in fear. What happened is that when I woke up early in the morning on Thursday last week I discovered some blood sprinkled all over the doorsteps, an indication that a ritual was performed in our yard while we were sleeping.
The blood was smelling as if it had been kept somewhere for some time before it was used.
The whole incident was confusing because we couldn’t figure out why anybody would leave blood on our doorstep.
There was also a white cloth that had the names of the whole family on it. I had to call fellow villagers to come and witness the bizarre scene and assist me to find ways to deal with it.

Khabo said the family consulted prophets to help explain the situation and the spiritualists said that someone close to the family had planted black magic to bring suffering into their lives. He added:
<blockquote>
When they came the prophets performed some rituals to cleanse the yard. They took the white cloth that was soaked with blood and with our names and burnt it.
</blockquote>
Emahlabathini Village head Frank Hlalakuhle said he was yet to receive details of the incident.
