The World Health Organization (WHO) has acknowledged there is emerging evidence that the coronavirus can be spread by tiny particles suspended in the air.
An official said the airborne transmission could not be ruled out in crowded, closed or poorly ventilated settings cautioning however that the evidence is preliminary and requires further assessment.
WHO made the admission after 239 scientists from 32 countries, in an open letter, had accused the United Nations agency of underestimating the possibility of airborne transmission.
Jose Jimenez, a chemist at the University of Colorado who signed the paper, told the Reuters news agency that the purpose of the letter was to make WHO “acknowledge the evidence.” He added:
<blockquote>This is definitely not an attack on the WHO. It’s a scientific debate, but we felt we needed to go public because they were refusing to hear the evidence after many conversations with them.</blockquote>
The UN agency has for four months insisted that Covid-19 is transmitted via droplets emitted when people cough or sneeze.
If the evidence to suggest airborne transmission is possible is confirmed, the advice on how to prevent the virus spreading may have to change and could lead to more widespread use of masks, and more rigorous distancing.

COVID-19: WHO Admits Possibility Of Airborne Transmission

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned African states against lifting coronavirus restrictions saying that this can exacerbate the spread of the virus.
The warning was issued by WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus on Friday while speaking at his daily press briefing. He said:
<blockquote>I know that some countries are already planning the transition out of stay-at-home restrictions, WHO wants to see restrictions lifted as much as anyone.
At the same time, lifting restrictions too quickly could lead to a deadly resurgence, the way down can be as dangerous as the way up if not managed properly.
WHO is working with affected countries on strategies for gradually and safely easing restrictions.</blockquote>
He also said that although the number of coronavirus cases and deaths is still insignificant in comparison to that of other continents, the rate at which the virus is spreading on the continent is alarming particularly taking into consideration that most countries’ health systems are collapsed.
Ghebreyesus also observed that the virus was now spreading to rural areas which is a frightening development since rural areas normally have inadequate resources compared to towns.
Meanwhile, some affected African countries are reportedly mulling easing measures they implemented to stop the spread of coronavirus due to their economic and humanitarian effects on the citizenry.

President Robert Mugabe has been appointed the first ever goodwill ambassador on non-communicable diseases (NCD) by the World Health Organisation (WHO). The announcement was made by WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus at the ongoing WHO Global Conference on NCDs in Uruguay.
Non-communicable diseases are diseases of long duration and generally slow progression such as Alzheimer’s, Asthma, Cataracts, Chronic Kidney Disease, Chronic Lung Disease, Diabetes. These are emerging as a global threat and are becoming the leading causes of death globally, killing more people each year than all other causes combined.

Mugabe Appointed WHO Goodwill Ambassador on NCDs

Speaking at at the launch of the Zimbabwe Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) national action plan and the AMR Situation Analysis Report, World Health Organisation (WHO) representative in Zimbabwe, David Okello said some food and water being consumed in the country contains antibiotics that may lead to the development of antimicrobial resistance.
Antimicrobial resistance happens when bacteria, viruses, parasites and fungi develop resistance against medicines that were previously able to kill them. Said Okello:
<blockquote>Already, massive use of antibiotics by food industries combined with irrational and unprescribed dispensing is largely fuelling the development of antimicrobial resistance. The food that we take and some of the water we buy may contain certain portions of antibiotics, which may cause resistance in the near future.</blockquote>
