A man named Sylvester Marima, who resides in Block 2 of Mbare Flats in Harare, Zimbabwe, has been convicted and handed a 10-year prison sentence at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison for the theft of armoured cables owned by the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC). The trial took place before Harare magistrate Ruth Moyo, with Tofara Chimbambo representing ZETDC during the proceedings. ZETDC is a subsidiary of ZESA Holdings.
What happened:
According to the prosecutor, Mandy Chigumira, the incident occurred on December 9, 2023. Marima took advantage of the absence of people on the ZETDC premises and illicitly gained access by forcibly opening a backdoor using an unidentified object.
Once inside, Marima caused damage to 15 core armoured cables that were positioned from the ceiling to the Zesa distribution board box. Additionally, it was revealed that he deliberately set fire to the cables to extract the valuable copper they contained.
The crime was brought to light by Taurai Mangombe, a nearby mechanic who noticed smoke emanating from the ZETDC premises. Curious, he decided to investigate the source of the smoke. To his surprise, Mangombe discovered Marima and his unidentified accomplices burning the stolen cables.
Promptly, Mangombe contacted the CID Minerals, Fauna, and Flora Unit detectives, leading to Marima’s subsequent arrest. Although the burned armoured cables were recovered by the police, Marima’s accomplices managed to flee the scene upon realising the presence of the law enforcement officers.
Chimbambo, the ZETDC loss control officer, was summoned to verify that the confiscated property belonged to the power company, confirming its ownership.
Marima initially denied the charges but was ultimately found guilty after the trial, resulting in a 10-year imprisonment at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison.
Copper cable theft is a significant issue in Zimbabwe and South Africa. It particularly affects organizations like ZESA, TelOne, and the National Railways of Zimbabwe. The theft has negatively affected the provision of essential services such as internet and electricity. Thieves steal these cables and then sell them in South Africa, where they are further sold to countries abroad.

Mbare Man Convicted Of Armoured Cable Theft Receives 10-Year Sentence

The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC), which is a part of the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA), has announced that there was a fault at the Insukamini 330KV Substation this morning. As a result, there was a loss of electricity across the whole country. Some parts of Zimbabwe have been experiencing prolonged power outages, even before the rainy season began. This is not a new problem for the country, as it has been struggling with insufficient electricity supply for many years. The peak demand for electricity in Zimbabwe is estimated at 1,850 megawatts (MW), but the current capacity falls below 1,200 MW from the country’s major power generation plants, including Hwange Thermal Power Station and Kariba Hydrothermal Power Station, as well as smaller thermal plants and Independent Power Producers (IPPs).
The main challenges contributing to the power shortage include ageing equipment, which the government and its partners are addressing by renovating power stations like Hwange Thermal. The Kariba Hydropower station is also producing less electricity than its capacity because the Zambezi River Authority limits water usage by Zimbabwe and Zambia. Additionally, there have been issues with coal supply, as miners are hesitant to supply power stations citing payment delays.

Fault At Insukamini 330KV Substation Leads To Loss Of Power On The National Grid - ZESA

The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC), which is a subsidiary of the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA), has announced that there will be planned power interruptions in the Eastern, Southern, and Western regions. The power utility said these interruptions are necessary for maintenance work and have been scheduled for specific hours.
The maintenance is planned for the Tokwe Bulk Supply Point on December 13, 2023, from 6:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
The affected areas include Masvingo City, Mucheke, Rujeko, Zimre Park, 4 Brigade, Clipsham, Morningside, Zimuto, Gokomere, Bikita, Nyika, Bikita Minerals, Marah Ranch, Nemamwa, Great Zimbabwe, Bushmead Water Works, Mushandike, Chivi, Mashava, Hama, Chirumhanzu, Zvishavane, Gwanda, Mberengwa, Chiredzi, Triangle Town, Triangle Mill, Hippo Valley, Rutenga, Mwenezi, Tokwe Mukosi, Beitbridge, Checheche, Chisumbanje, Zaka, Jerera, Mkwasine, Renco Mine, Mupapa, and many other locations in the region.
ZETDC advised customers in these areas to consider all circuits as live during this period, as power may be restored without prior notice.

ZETDC has stated that if you bought any electricity tokens before the upgrade, you must input them into your meter before the upgrade takes place. ZETDC says it will not take responsibility for any old tokens that were not used or recharged before the upgrade.

According to ZETDC, as of today, October 25, 2023, Zimbabwe generated a total of 1207MW of electricity. This electricity is produced from various power stations including Hwange Thermal Power Station, Kariba Hydropower Station, Small Thermals, and Independent Power Producers (IPPs). However, it is worth noting that the power stations in Harare and Bulawayo are not currently contributing to electricity production.

ZESA Experiencing Depressed Electricity Generation Due To Faults At Hwange Power Station

The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) is planning to raise electricity tariffs from US$0.1063 to US$0.1263 in order to raise funds. ZETDC is seeking to collect around US$2.95 billion to strengthen its network.
The utility also disclosed that it is owed US$243 million by electricity consumers and faces challenges in connecting 400,000 customers due to insufficient funding caused by low tariffs and vandalism of infrastructure. The ZESA subsidiary said non-cost-reflective tariff structures between 2009 and 2022 have resulted in a revenue deficit for the utility. The proposed tariff increase is currently being discussed in consultations led by the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA). Speaking at the ongoing ZERA-led consultations with consumers on the proposed tariff increase, ZETDC said:

The impact was failure to maintain, expand and rehabilitate the electricity infrastructure at the same level as the number of consumers increased.
In order to maintain credit worthiness, ZETDC has to pay US$35 million every month towards the servicing of a loan for the upgrade of Hwange 7 and 8 power generators to the Chinese who did the rehabilitation works.

ZETDC also stated that the current electricity tariff rate of US$0.1063c, which was last approved in 2019, is insufficient to meet their financial obligations and power generation needs. ZETDC has acknowledged the concerns raised by residents regarding their contributions towards acquiring transformers and other infrastructure. The utility clarified that while there are different methods of making contributions, they bear the ultimate responsibility for maintaining their infrastructure.
To address issues of vandalism, which has led to the need for 27,000 transformer replacements, ZETDC plans to introduce anti-intrusion detectors for transformer protection. Residents who wish to contribute towards securing their transformers can coordinate with ZETDC officials, but the mechanism for these contributions needs to be reviewed to ensure transparency and accountability. ZETDC said it recognises the importance of working collaboratively with residents to address infrastructure challenges and improve service delivery.

Zimbabwe Gives Update On Hwange Power Station's Units 7 And 8 Commissioning

The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) has announced that the 300MW Hwange Unit 7 has been temporarily removed from the grid for system evaluation before the final commissioning phase.

Engineers have taken it off the grid for evaluation of all systems in preparation of the final phase of commissioning (performance guarantees test).
This entails temporary removal of 300MW from the grid resulting in our customers not enjoying the general power stability that had been obtaining in the past days.
The unit is expected back online within the next few days. Any inconveniences are sincerely regretted.

Hwange Thermal Power Station’s Unit 7 was <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2023/03/21/hwange-power-station-unit-7-synchronised-successfully/">synchronised and began feeding electricity into the national grid on March 20.</a> The synchronisation was successful, and 41MW of electricity was fed into the grid 20 minutes after the process began.
The unit is expected to reach its installed capacity of 300MW by June this year. 
Zimbabwe is expanding the Hwange power station with two 300MW units – Units 7 and 8 – funded mainly by China. The Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) expects Unit 8 to generate power in October.
On Wednesday, May 10, three power stations – Harare (11MW), Kariba (586MW), and Hwange (326MW) – were generating a total of 923MW, according to ZPC.
The company also reported that on Thursday (today), the three above, out of five power stations, were generating a total of 853MW. Harare 
was generating 11MW, Kariba (522MW) while Hwange was generating 320MW.
According to the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC), the estimated electricity demand at peak in Zimbabwe is around 1 800MW.

ZETDC Says Hwange Unit 7 Has Been Temporarily Removed From The Grid

Electricity Prepaid Token Purchase Down Till 6 May Evening - ZESA

Industry warns that paying electricity tariffs in US$ will worsen Zimbabwe’s economic crisis. <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/ZESA">Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA)</a> has announced that it will charge power usage in US$, but this move is seen as exacerbating the already dire situation faced by companies, which are experiencing prolonged power outages of up to 20 hours a day.
The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Confederation_of_Zimbabwe_Industries">Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries (CZI)</a> acknowledges that ZESA imports electricity and pays in US$, but urges the authority to assume the responsibility of obtaining foreign currency and to remove it from the burden of companies. NewZimbabwe cites CZI as saying:

However, while this need is clear, the liability for raising this foreign currency should not be passed on to business.
Rather, ZESA should be able to purchase foreign currency from the auction or WBWS like every other importer, rather than getting the prerogative of charging in only one currency in a dual currency environment, where businesses earn a portion in ZWL$.

The industry in Zimbabwe is experiencing increased costs due to power cuts, which are causing damage to machines and increased production costs due to the usage of alternative energy sources.
CZI added that the payment of electricity tariffs in US$ is making it more difficult to do business and promoting dollarisation, which has more disadvantages than advantages for the industry. However, there is hope for improvement in the situation in 2023, as Kariba water levels are expected to improve from April to November of that year due to improved rainfall patterns.
The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) expects Kariba Power Station to feed 775MW by mid-April to May 2023, up from the current 350MW.
Hwange Unit 7 was added to the national grid in March 2023 and Hwange 8 is expected to be complete by June 2023. The two power stations are expected to add 600MW to the grid, which would see power cuts declining by May 2023.

Paying Electricity Tariffs In US$ Will Worsen Things - Industry

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/ZESA">Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA)</a> has said Bulawayo waterworks are exempted from load-shedding.
This came after the Local Government Ministry met council officials as well as officials from the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) to get an appreciation of the water challenges in Bulawayo.
During the meeting, ZETDC, a subsidiary of ZESA, reportedly undertook to ensure that the city’s water pumping and treatment works are exempted from load shedding.
Commenting on the outcome of the meeting, ZETDC acting western region general manager Engineer Lloyd Jaji, confirmed that the power utility would work on exempting the city’s pumping and treatment works from load shedding. Eng Jaji told <a href="https://www.sundaynews.co.zw/no-more-power-cuts-at-water-works-load-shedding-reprieve-for-zitf-period/">The Sunday News</a>:

If the situation allows, we will surely be exempting their pumping and treatment works from load shedding so as to allow smooth pumping and increase in water supplies from the city. Yes, for now they have dedicated lines to their stations, where the Esigodini line is carrying them but if we get adequate supplies from our power sources, we will be exempting their stations totally from any load shedding.

Bulawayo Mayor Clr <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Solomon_Mguni">Solomon Mguni</a> also reiterated that ZESA assured the local government authority that the city’s waterworks would be exempted from load-shedding. He is cited as saying:

It was a closed-door meeting with lots of assurances, basically, the issue of exemption of the treatment works to power cuts by ZETDC and rehabilitation of boreholes at Rochester and Epping Forest by ZINWA and other water projects that may require Government funding came up for discussion.

Bulawayo, Zimbabwe’s second-largest city, is facing one of its worst water crises in recent years, which has seen the council adopting a 72-hour water-shedding schedule to conserve available supplies until the next rainy season. However, the local authority has had to constantly suspend the 72-hour shedding schedule replacing it with a provisional water supply restoration schedule, attributing that to erratic power supplies at water stations.
BCC claimed they were only receiving 8-10 hours of power supply a day, resulting in a drop from the early March 2023 system input volume.
While exemption of power cuts at the city’s waterworks is likely to reduce the crisis, the National Matabeleland Zambezi Water Project is seen as the answer to solve perennial water challenges in Bulawayo. The project is expected to be completed this year, with the construction of Lake Gwayi-Shangani and the Shangani Bulawayo pipeline close to completion.

Waterworks Exempted From Load-shedding - ZESA

ZESA Holdings subsidiary, Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC), says it is generating 951 megawatts (MW) of electricity against a national peak demand of 2 200MW.
The power shortage has resulted in the country experiencing electricity blackouts of up to 18 hours per day in some areas.
Despite the successful synchronisation of Hwange Unit 7 into the national grid, ZETDC call centre supervisor Milton Zata said they were still facing challenges. <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200009437/zesa-only-generating-951mw">NewsDay</a> quotes Zata as saying:

ZESA Generating 951 MW Of Electricity Against Demand Of 2 200MW

The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) in conjunction with the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) have advised members of the public to be alert as there could be fallen electricity poles or cables in their areas. In a statement seen by Pindula News, the two companies urged members of the public to report such incidents to avoid loss of life. Reads the statement:
Do not touch low-hanging or fallen electricity poles or cables even if they appear harmless. They are usually live and you may be electrocuted.

ZESA Deploys Officers To Replace Post Paid Meters With Prepaid Meters

The Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) last week met energy consumers at Sunningdale Community Hall in Harare to share information on the safe use and efficient use of energy products.
The engagement was held in partnership with the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC), the Harare Residents Trust and the Consumer Council of Zimbabwe.
The engagements are premised on offering the residents an opportunity to raise their energy-related concerns and complaints and how such are handled through the “complaints handling procedure.
Eng. Nelia Mupereka bemoaned the loss of lives and limbs due to electrical accidents as a result of disregarding safety advice in handling electrical infrastructure.
<h2>Major causes of recorded electricity accidents:</h2>

i). Unsafe practices or operations by members of the public constitute the biggest part of the accidents at 40% of the recorded cases.
ii). Some of the attributed malpractices include illegal connections.

iv). Overloading of electricity adapters and engaging unqualified and unauthorized personnel for domestic electrical installations.

Reports of people who died while tampering with ZESA equipment have been on the rise. In some cases, ZESA employees were implicated.

ZERA Lists Major Causes Of Recorded Electricity Accidents

The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC), a subsidiary of <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/ZESA_Holdings" title="ZESA Holdings">ZESA Holdings,</a> has announced that all foreign currency earners are required to pay electricity bills in United States Dollars with effect from the 1st of October 2022. Forex Earners Required To Pay Electricity Bills In USD With Effect From 1 October

Security agents implementing an operation dubbed “No to Cross border Crimes” Thursday intercepted copper cables worth around US$100 000 that were being smuggled to South Africa. 
The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Energy_Distribution_and_Transmission_Company">Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC)</a> and the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/National_Railways_of_Zimbabwe">National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ)</a> have positively identified part of the recovered cables as theirs.
The police are yet to make arrests after the driver of the truck that was carrying the cables fled upon sensing that he had been detected by intelligence officials at the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Beitbridge">Beitbridge Border Post.</a>
Team leader, Chief Superintendent Bekezela Ndlovu said intensive investigations into the matter were underway. She told <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/trucker-transporting-us100-000-stolen-zesa-cables-flees-from-police-at-border/">Chronicle:</a>

We are yet to make any arrests and our intelligence officers are firm on the ground following up on the case.
Initial indications are that our officers reacted to a tip off and swooped on a South African bound commercial truck at the border.
Unfortunately, the truck driver escaped before they could get to him and we have leads and are looking for him.

Ndlovu said following a physical examination, it was discovered that the truck was laden with nearly 5 tonnes of copper cables with a street value of US$97 400.
She said the copper cables, copper scrap, used cans consignment, the horse and trailer had been seized and handed over to the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Revenue_Authority">Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA).</a>
Ndlovu said they had deployed enough manpower and discovered the methods some criminals are using to smuggle goods in and out of the country. 
She said police had also busted a number of warehouses around Beitbridge town which were being used to store smuggled goods from South Africa.

Beitbridge: Security Intercept US$100K Worth Of Copper Cables Being Smuggled To South Africa

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Energy_Distribution_and_Transmission_Company">Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC)</a> has said more than 350 000 households who have applied for electricity connection are still waiting to be connected to the grid, 
ZETDC commercial director Mr Ralph Katsande there were numerous challenges to connecting new clients, mainly involving the required infrastructure. He told The Herald in a recent interview in Victoria Falls:

As a country, we are facing a backlog of over 350 000 that require connection. We have got a customer base of over 850 000 and potentially we can connect another 360 000, but we don’t have backbone infrastructure to do that.

He said in the last couple of months, ZETDC had been on a recapitalisation drive to mobilise funds for projects including acquiring replacement equipment.
ZETDC is also fighting thieves stealing cables and transformers, despite the minimum 10-year-sentences for this.
Energy production and availability are part of the priority areas for the Government in its development agenda as the power supply is key to economic stabilisation and growth.
Katsande said ZESA and ZETDC had come up with interventions to enable the utility to play its role in economic growth.
Some of the interventions include increasing power generation to augment supply and signing up agreements with independent power producers to eliminate load shedding and eventually make the country a net exporter.
ZETDC also has slightly over 23 000 customers who are off supply for long periods because of vandalism, which is costing the utility US$4 million per year in equipment damage and US$1.6 million per month in revenue.

ZETDC Says 350k Still Waiting To Be Connected To The National Grid

The Permanent Secretary for Energy and Power Development, Dr Gloria Magombo has said power supplies are set to normalise from today after almost a week of exceptionally high-level load shedding.
The power transmission and distribution arm of ZESA attributed the prolonged blackouts to breakdowns of four generation units at Hwange Thermal Power Station and a far smaller challenge at Kariba South last weekend.
Speaking on Tuesday 29 September 2022 in the capital after yesterday’s Cabinet meeting, Dr Magombo, said:

The situation which we have had in the past week or so is that we had lost a number of units at Hwange which were due for service.
These are occurrences which have been happening over the past couple of months due to the age of the equipment and we have also had a challenge or two in Kariba. We have managed to restore one of the units back in service. The situation was exaggerated on Tuesday when we had a system fault which took the whole system out which lasted for about four and half hours.
By end of day yesterday, we had two units in Hwange that were in service with about 245MW added to the grid. This still caused serious load shedding because the supply-demand gap was much higher than normal.
We are working on another two units in Hwange, Unit 4 and Unit 2 which will be coming back by Friday (today). By tomorrow we will have at least four units in service in Hwange which will give us almost 400MW and this power shortage will ease and significantly improve the supply situation in the country.
</blockquote>
Magombo said a bush fire on the main grid along the Alaska-Warren line Number 2 shut down that line and consequently, a number of other lines were lost including those bringing in imports.
She added:

1). all 7 units in Kariba were restored within four and half hours together with the imports and the independent power producers managed to come in.
2). Units 3 and 4 in Hwange were now firing and feeding the grid.
3). Thermal units took longer to bring up to full output even when repaired.
4). Unit 7 at Hwange was above 95 per cent complete and the commissioning of completed circuits has already started.
5). Unit 7 would be supplying a commercial load of 300MW into the system by November while Unit 8 will be completed by the end of the first quarter of next year.

Govt Says The Power Situation To Significantly Improve

Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs) as well as households have lamented over power outages which they say have had a huge negative impact on their businesses and lives.
The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC), a subsidiary of ZESA Holdings this week announced new power cuts, blaming generation problems and shrinking imports.
The load-shedding can last more than 16 hours daily.
Members of the public are reportedly being forced to throw away rotting meat from fridges in a development that has also affected butchers who do not have alternative power sources.
Motor vehicle repair shops, as well as hammer mills in the high-density areas, have also been left struggling with increased costs of running generators to keep their businesses going.
Industrialists recently warned that the crisis could worsen considering that Eskom which supplies ZESA with about 400MW is struggling to meet the demand in South Africa.
Eskom, South Africa’s power utility is also facing power generation challenges due to ageing equipment.

ZETDC Apologises "For An Unplanned Nationwide Power Outage"

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/ZESA">Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA)</a> on Tuesday 27 September 2022 announced that Zimbabwe had experienced a national blackout as of 1030 hrs.
The local power utility said the blackouts were a result of a loss of power on the national grid. 
The authority said it had established that the Hwange Power Station had tripped out adding that efforts were underway to restore the national grid. Said ZESA in a statement:

Kindly note that we have experienced a National Blackout as at 1030hrs this morning.
We will advise on changes.

The blackouts come barely days after the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC), a ZESA subsidiary warned members of the public to brace for increased load-shedding which was attributed to technical challenges being experienced at Kariba and Hwange Power Stations as well as import constraints. 
The crisis is expected to take some time considering that one of the biggest suppliers of electricity, Eskom, South Africa’s power utility, is failing to generate power enough to meet local demand.
Industrialists actually believe that the situation might get worse if South Africa moves to purchase electricity from neighbouring countries as that will result in power prices going up.
Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce (ZNCC) president Mike Kamungeremu recently said the country needs to quickly focus on its own power generation, as power shortages in South Africa threaten local industry.
Meanwhile, ZESA says <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Kariba">Kariba</a>’s two generating units that are being constructed have the capacity to generate 300MW of power while <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Hwange_Power_Station">Hwange</a> will see two more units being added with a combined capacity of 600MW.
This still would only narrow Zimbabwe’s power deficit of between 1 000MW and 1 600MW.

"We've Experienced A National Blackout As At 1030hrs This Morning" - ZESA

Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce (ZNCC) president Mike Kamungeremu said the country needs to quickly focus on its own power generation, as power shortages in South Africa threaten local industry.
Over the past few weeks, South Africa’s power utility, Eskom, reported that several coal-powered generation units had broken down owing to old age and poor maintenance.
There are fears that power blackouts in South Africa will result in:

1). reduced power supply to Zimbabwe. Eskom used to sell up to 400MW of electricity per month to Zimbabwe
2). a delay in delivery of imports from SA by local industry.,
3). a rise in electricity prices in the region as SA will look beyond its borders to secure electricity for its industry.

Kamungeremu told NewsDay Business that Zimbabwe has other options but should now focus on ensuring that its power generators can produce enough power for the whole nation. He said on Eskom’s power blackouts:

It could have some effect since we import power from them but I don’t want to read much into that. We have other options like Mozambique and Zambia but our real focus must actually be on our own power generating infrastructure.
We have been informed that Hwange 7 and 8 are nearing completion and that’s sweet news to our ears. We would rather look forward to the 600 megawatts expected from those plants than worrying about power cuts in South Africa.

Zimbabwe has a power deficit of between 1 000MW and 1 600MW and as a result, has been importing US$17 million worth of power monthly to meet the local electricity generation shortfall.
Shortages of foreign currency limited imports. Last year, ZESA spent US$225 million on power imports.

The government is upgrading and adding new generation units to the power plants at the Kariba and Hwange power stations. 
Kariba’s two generating units that are being constructed have the capacity to generate 300MW of power while Hwange will see two more units being added with a combined capacity of 600MW.

ZNCC President Says Zimbabwe Should Focus On Own Power Generating Infrastructure

ProPlastics, one of Zimbabwe’s largest pipe manufacturers, has reported that it lost 19 days of production due to power cuts in the first half of the year 2022. 
The company has recently opened a new 500mm PVC pipe factory line to meet growing demand from construction.
In the past three years, Zimbabwe experienced a huge power crisis, the biggest since 2016. 
Authorities attribute the crisis to ageing equipment at the country’s power generators such as Hwange Thermal Power Station and Kariba Hydro Power Station.
At the peak of the crisis, some regions in the country would go for up to 18 hours without power.
Last week, the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC), a subsidiary of power utility ZESA Holdings, rolled out an<a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/zesa-explains-increased-load-shedding-hours/"> increased load shedding countrywide</a> citing “depressed generation on the grid coupled with increased electricity demand as a result of increased economic activities.”
Zimbabwe’s power-generating capacity is 1 400 megawatts, but the projected national peak demand is 2 400 megawatts.
The southern African country imports some electricity from South Africa and Mozambique, nevertheless, imports are not enough to cover the deficit.
Some companies have been resorting to expensive diesel generators to continue operating. Some have installed power systems and are even selling the surplus to the state.

ZESA has in the past attributed some power cuts witnessed countrywide to vandalism of its properties including transformers and cables. 
In August last year, <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/zesa-loses-23-000-transformers-to-vandals-in-bulawayo/">Zesa reported that it had lost 23 000 transformers and 76 000 cables in Bulawayo</a> to thieves adding that they needed to be urgently repaired. 
Thieves risk 30-year-jail terms. In 2019, then Minister of Energy and Power Development, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Fortune_Chasi" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Fortune Chasi</a>, warned members of the public against vandalising ZESA properties or buying stolen electricity infrastructure. He said:

If we find anyone with two litres of transformer oil, one will be imprisoned for 30 years as well.
We are now close to 3 000 transformers stolen, the unfortunate part is that people are dying trying to steal ZESA cables and transformers.

ZETDC experiences an average of 5 cases of vandalism of transformers or cables every day.

Thieves Steal ZESA Cables Plunging Some Parts Of Harare Into Darkness

A fire outbreak has disrupted power supply in some parts of the Bluff Hill suburb in Harare.
<a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/fire-plunges-bluff-hill-into-darkness/">The Herald</a> reports that the fire burnt to ashes a Zesa Holdings transformer along Campbell Town Road leaving some households without power since Thursday night.
Harare City Council chief fire officer Mr Lovemore Mafukidze confirmed the incident but referred further questions to Zesa. He said:

There was a fire outbreak in Bluff Hill where a Zesa transformer was burnt. The fire apparently disrupted electricity supplies to some properties around the area, but Zesa would have finer details on the issue.
</blockquote>
Zesa spokesperson Ms Prisca Utete referred questions to the power utility’s Harare region general manager Abel Gurupira. He said:

I am yet to receive a report of the incident, but the company’s policy is that only the public relations department is allowed to speak to the media, so Ms Utete should be handling this.
</blockquote>
The Zimbabwe Electricity Distribution and Transmission Company, a ZESA subsidiary issued a statement on Friday saying engineers were seized with the matter. Reads the statement:

Fire Disrupts Electricity Supply In Bluff Hill - ZESA

Ecocash has revealed that ZETDC has set a minimum purchase amount for electricity tokens using Ecocash. The new directive is with effect from the 18th of October 2019. In a statement, Ecocash said:
