The Zimbabwe National Army is looking to hire qualified candidates to be trained as Officer Cadets. They have vacancies that need to be filled within the army.
To be eligible for the position, candidates should:
1). Have at least six points at ‘A’ level and pass five ‘O’ level subjects with a grade of ‘C’ or better, including English Language and Mathematics. Having higher qualifications will be an advantage.
2). Candidates should be between 18 and 22 years old for ‘A’ level holders, and up to 26 years old for those with Diplomas or Degrees.
3). They should also be single.
4). Male candidates should have a minimum height of 1.65m and weigh not less than 55 kgs, while female candidates should have a minimum height of 1.55m and weigh not less than 53 kgs.
5). Applicants need to include their contact details and references in their application letters.
6). They should submit their application letters along with certified copies of their academic and professional certificates at designated venues within their provinces and districts from February 5 to February 19, 2024.

Successful candidates will undergo a selection process at the Zimbabwe Military Academy in Gweru. The training program will last for 21 months, after which candidates will be commissioned as Second Lieutenants in the Zimbabwe National Army.

Zimbabwe National Army Seeks Qualified Officer Cadets To Fill Vacancies

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_National_Army">Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA)</a> has advised members of the public to ignore a fake advert circulating on social media saying the army is not recruiting at the moment.
The army warned that criminals are using social media to scam people by falsely claiming that recruitment exercises are being held. A fake advert which says the army is recruiting is currently circulating on WhatsApp.
In a statement Director Army Public Relations Colonel Alphios Makotore said the members of the public should be wary of such elements insisting the advert was of the year 2021. Col Makotore said the army uses credible platforms to engage the public on recruitment exercises. He said:

The Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) would like to inform members of the public to be on the lookout for a fake ZNA recruitment advert circulating on social platforms.
The fake advert is an old copy of the ZNA recruitment advert flighted in 2021 which some mischief makers are circulating to mislead and defraud unsuspecting members of the public.
It is against this background that the ZNA would like to categorically reiterate that the ZNA has not flighted any recruitment advert for 2023. In the same vein, the ZNA does not use social media for the purpose of recruitment.

Col Makotore emphasized that the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) doesn’t involve any third parties or charge fees during the recruitment process. He said they had reported the incident to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) to bring the offenders to justice.
He also advised the public to be cautious and report any suspicious individuals pretending to be army recruitment agents adding that anyone caught associating with fake adverts will be prosecuted. Fake Advert, ZNA Is Not Recruiting

The government has offered a 400% pay hike for the soldiers and police much to the annoyance of teachers who were offered a 50% increase.
Teachers are currently the lowest-paid civil servants, earning around ZW$36 000 plus a US$120 foreign currency component.
Teachers rejected a 50 per cent increase in their local currency wages during the National Joint Negotiating Council meeting last week.
<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Obert_Masaraure">Obert Masaraure</a>, leader of the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Amalgamated_Rural_Teachers_Union_of_Zimbabwe">Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ)</a> criticised the government for selectively applying standards. NewsDay quotes him as saying:

The 50 per cent offered to other civil servants including teachers is a joke; unfortunately, we can’t laugh it off because families are starving.
We will not allow government to discriminate against any section of workers.
To that end, we shall force the employer to pay teachers a living wage. US$1,260 is the minimum demand from teachers.
Soldiers have guns but we have our collective force as workers.
The government is warned not to keep on stretching our patience. They will be faced with a tsunami of workers’ protests.

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Raymond_Majongwe">Raymond Majongwe</a>, secretary general of the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Progressive_Teachers_Union_of_Zimbabwe">Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ)</a>, echoed Masaraure’s remarks. He said:

We don’t challenge that soldiers have been paid, we celebrate that at least somebody has realised that soldiers are being underpaid but then why then cherry-pick and choose soldiers over the teachers; why not give us the same.
Remember in the past, teachers were the first to be paid. They have turned it around.
They have paid the soldiers first, they have paid the police, they have paid the nurses and teachers who come last in that rank and file. That is unacceptable.

Zimbabwe Congress Of Public Sector Trade Unions (ZCPSTU), organizing secretary, Charles Chinosengwa described the government’s selective awarding of a 400% pay hike to soldiers and police as a divide-and-rule tactic capable of bringing ruin to the education sector.
Observers view the government’s decision to award soldiers and police a 400% wage increase as an attempt to appease the security sector ahead of harmonised elections scheduled for July this year.

Soldiers, Police Get 400% Pay Hike

A 22-year-old man was arrested for stabbing and killing a soldier on Christmas Day, according to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP).
A police statement seen by Pindula News does not state the reason behind the murder. Reads the statement:

The ZRP has arrested Ronald Ncube (22) for a murder case in which he fatally stabbed a ZNA officer, Simesihle Mkandla (24), with a knife at St Luke’s Business Centre on 25/12/22. The Police express concern with suspects, who are moving around with okapi knives and attacking people who will be trying to stop them from using the weapons to commit crime.

Meanwhile, ZRP Silobela has arrested Blessing Maphosa (40) for a case of murder in which he allegedly assaulted Mandla Moyo (47) several times on the head with a log after the victim had tried to rebuke him during a domestic dispute with his wife.
The incident occurred at Mazibeka village on 25 December 2022. Moyo victim sustained head injuries and succumbed to the injuries on 27 December 2022.
 In another case, the ZRP is appealing for information which may lead to the arrest of Clever Mudzengerere (24) in connection with a murder case in which he allegedly fatally assaulted Tungamirirai Munyanywa (28) in the company of two unknown accomplices, in Mudzi on boxing day.

A 22-old Man Kills A Soldier On Christmas

A <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_National_Army">Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA)</a> and Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) officers who allegedly robbed a Chinese mine in Mazowe were arrested on Tuesday.
Tawanda Marumahoko (ZPCS) and Godfrey Chibanganye (ZNA) appeared before <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Bindura">Bindura</a> regional magistrate Amos Mbobo facing a robbery charge.
The duo pleaded not guilty and was remanded in custody, according to <a href="https://bulawayo24.com/index-id-news-sc-national-byo-226327.html">Bulawayo24</a>.
<h2>What happened:</h2>
Prosecutor Edward Katsvairo alleged that on November 12, 2022, the armed duo together with their 12 accomplices pounced on the Iron Cap mine to rob pregnant carbons.
In the gold industry, activated carbon is used to recover gold from the gold-cyanide complex also known as the cyanide process. It is a technique for extracting gold from low-grade ore by converting the gold to a water-soluble coordination complex.
The duo tied security guards with brickforce before robbing them of their phones.
They proceeded to the storeroom where they robbed 300 kilograms of pregnant carbons valued at US$2 142.
A police report was filed leading to the arrest of the duo.
There have been several reported robbery cases involving serving or retired members of the uniformed forces prompting Parliament to summon military chefs to explain the trend.
Some observers attribute the trend to the economic challenges in the country.

Armed Soldier And Prisons Officer Rob A Chinese Gold Mine

Defence minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri and Home Affairs colleague Kazembe Kazembe lamented the dire state of affairs in the security services.
Muchinguri-Kashiri said the poor budgetary support for the ministry had resulted in soldiers being the subject of public ridicule and insults, according to <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/govt-funding-crisis-soldiers-fed-sadza-and-beans-publicly-ridiculed-says-defence-minister-police-situation-desperate-warns-home-affairs-colleague/">NewZimbabwe</a>.
Speaking during the ongoing Parliamentary consultations for the 2023 national budget held in Harare at the weekend, Muchinguri-Kashiri said:

Soldiers do not have adequate accommodation; they need to be in barracks.
They are given all sorts of names, they use public transport, they are insulted on a daily basis and whilst on duty, they sometimes go without food.
On the food items they are supposed to be getting 53 items but this has been reduced to five items only. Soldiers were going for Sadza and beans without cooking oil daily.

Home Affairs minister Kazembe Kazembe said the situation was equally bad for the country’s police service. He said:

The police force situation is very desperate.
You should actually be thanking the police that we still have sanity and tranquillity in our country because of the situation these men and women are going through.

ZANU PF’s Buhera South legislator Joseph Chinotimba warned the ministers to remember that their security was provided by these disgruntled officers, adding that the situation was a national security threat.

Parliament’s Defence Committee Chairperson Levi Mayihlome (ZANU PF) added that there is gross disgruntlement over police transport allowances.
Independent Norton legislator, Temba Mliswa questioned the prioritisation of scarce resources pointing out that while critical services were underfunded, the government still managed to find the money for ministers’ vehicles and housing loans.
He claimed ministers had two government issue luxury vehicles, adding they were also given housing loans of US$500 000 each.
Speaker Jacob Mudenda challenged Parliamentary committees and government departments to come up with domestic resource mobilisation strategies to help alleviate poverty across the country.

Ministers Lament The Dire State Of Affairs In The Security Services

A Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) soldier was shot dead by police detectives pursuing a gang of suspected armed robbers, who included three other army officers, in Birchenough, Mutare.
The now deceased army non-commissioned officer was identified as Elliot Kandiyero (27) of 3 Brigade in Mutare, <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/zna-soldier-killed-in-armed-robbery-attempt-police-arrest-seven-accomplices/">NewZimbabwe</a> reported.
The arrested suspects are;

1). James Keriphanos Makombe (22), a private of ZNA 1 Brigade in Bulawayo, 
2). Lance Corporal Oswald Kaseke (27) of ZNA Military School of Music and Corporal 
3). Maxwell Kuwanda (32) of 5 Brigade in Kwekwe.
4). Peterson Chiripiwako (33) of Nyanga,
5). Owen Dzinduwa (26) of Nyanga,
6). Collius Kamuti (40) of Nyanga, 
7). Timothy Mawere (29) of Bikita.

A leaked Zimbabwe Republic Police’s Criminal Investigations Department (CID) internal memorandum dated October 2, 2022, says the <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/armed-robber-dies-in-shootout-with-police-at-birchenough-bridge-business-centre/">shootout occurred at Birchenough Bridge Shopping Centre</a> leading to the death of one suspect and the arrest of seven others.
Reads the memo seen by NewZimbabwe.com, “This memorandum serves to advise and put on record the circumstances surrounding the above subject matter.

On 1 October 2022, at around 2000 hours accused persons 1, 2, 3 and 4 were arrested by details from ZRP Bikita and Nehanda Business Centre after they received a tip off that the accused persons were intending to commit armed robbery at the business centre.
The four accused persons were taken to ZRP Bikita where they were interviewed by detectives from CID Homicide Harare and CID Nyanga.
During the interviews it was established that the accused persons were arrested whilst waiting for their five (5) accomplices who were armed so that they could execute their plan.
Detectives then received information to the effect that the five accused persons were at Birchenough Bridge Business Centre and were driving in a white Toyota Cresta registration number ADE 8291.
Detectives from CID Homicide swiftly reacted to the information and proceeded to Birchenough Bridge Business Centre and spotted the accused persons’ getaway car parked at the shops.
Detectives approached the accused persons’ vehicle and identified themselves but the accused persons bolted out of the vehicle.
The now deceased Elliot Kandiyero, who was armed with a Mosrberg, fired shots towards detectives whilst Moses Tengera who escaped also fired shots from a suspected revolver.
Detectives fired back and managed to arrest accused 5, 6, 7 and 8. Upon arrest, detectives recovered the Mosberg with serial number 46B159 and 3 x 12 bore live rounds of ammunition from the now deceased who got injured during the shootout.

The now deceased was rushed to Birchenough Bridge District Hospital for treatment but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Searches were conducted on the robbers’ car and a 24-pound hammer and a machete were recovered.
Investigations are in progress.

Update On Birchenough Shooting: ZNA Soldier Shot Dead, Other Army Officers Arrested

A former army officer reportedly smuggled guns from South Africa to Zimbabwe as a cover for the importation of the wrong guns.
The guns were ordered from the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) for the Presidential Guard, an elite unit responsible for protecting the President, <a href="https://thenewshawks.com/arms-smuggling-saga-deepens-as-new-details-on-the-deal-emerge/">NewsHawks</a> reported.
<h2>What transpired:</h2>
The order came from the ZNA and was first given to Ukubambana Commodities (Pvt) Ltd managing director Gladman Chipidza who then contracted former army doctor and now arms dealer Gugulethu Mabhena.
Mabhena reportedly bought the wrong consignment which was later rejected. 
Mabhena smuggled the guns into Zimbabwe through Beitbridge, but instead of taking back the wrong consignment, he sought to construct an elaborate cover-up for the mistake.
He allegedly told the police that the guns were going to the Zimbabwe Defence Industries (ZDI)’s Alphida Production in Domboshava.
Police insisted on seeing the documents prompting Mabhena to rope in ZDI general manager Hope Goliath Mutize to claim that the guns were ordered by his organisation.
Mutize, who is out on bail, then ordered Group Captain Leonard Matambo, an Air Force of Zimbabwe senior commissioned officer who works for the ZDI, to intervene and write a letter claiming the consignment.
Matambo was, however, arrested on 29 August for allegedly trying to facilitate the smuggling into the country of the weapons by Mabhena.
The two were arrested and charged with conspiring to smuggle 31 AK-47 rifles and 62 magazines. 
Sources told the NewsHawks that:

1). Mabhena bought the wrong model of guns which was rejected by ZNA as that would raise security, financial and accountability issues. 
2). He didn’t even have an export permit from South Africa or an import permit for this. 
3). Mabhena couldn’t take them back as that would be risky to smuggle them back; so he decided to take them to ZDI as several government departments were demanding answers.

The case is now being investigated.

Zimbabwe’s court-martial has sentenced three soldiers to 15 years in prison each for armed robbery, theft and unlawful entry.

As the military justice and deterrent sentences against rogue elements of the force continue to be dispensed, Lance Corporal Ndlovu Fortune and privates Manyanga Ratiel and Masase Kainos were on 05 March 2022 sentenced to 15 years imprisonment each by the Zimbabwe Defence Forces General Court Martial.
They were convicted of armed robbery, unlawful entry and theft after a fully contested trial before the General Court Martial seating in Bulawayo last week. They had all pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The trio, who were all serving with 4 Infantry Brigade in Masvingo, committed armed robbery, unlawful entry and theft cases in and around Masvingo between January and July 2021. Ndlovu was reduced in rank to private before all three were discharged from the Zimbabwe National Army with ignominy, and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment each for the offences. The Zimbabwe National Army has warned that any of its members caught on the wrong side of the law will face the full wrath of the law.

The area is in a gold mining region where illegal gold mining activities are rampant. Investigations have revealed that the incident involved artisanal miners (Makorokoza) who were fighting amongst themselves. ZRP Esigodini reacted and dispersed the rowdy artisanal miners. The Army encourages Journalists to always check with the police to verify information and incidents before rushing to publish unverified stories.

Zimbabwe National Army Responds To Reports Saying Soldiers Assaulted Villagers After Beer Dispute

The Zimbabwe Defense Forces (ZDF) has deployed hundreds of heavily armed soldiers in areas in and around Chiredzi thereby causing panic among villagers.
Some villagers from Chilonga where Government plans to evict 12 000 families to give way to a Lucerne grass project who spoke on condition of anonymity said they were afraid that the Army will use force to evict them. Said one village head who declined to be named:

There are hundreds of soldiers who are armed like they are in the battlefield. They are armed to teeth, it’s frightening. 

</blockquote>
Deputy director of Army public relations, Lieutenant Colonel Alex Zuva confirmed the deployments in a statement to The Mirror but said that these were routine training programmes. He said:

The exercise is part of routine training that ZDF conducts regularly in fulfilment of its Consitutional mandate. The field training exercise is beig conducted jointly with other security services including ZRP and the President’s Department. The training is being conducted in areas under Chief Sengwe, Chief Chitanga, chief Mpapa, Chief Neromwe, Chief Chilonga and Chief Gezani.
As part of the ZDF Community Assistance programmes, a COVID-19 vaccination programme will run concurrently with the exercise. The field training exercise which started on September 27, 2021 is expected to end on October 23, 2021.

Masvingo Centre for Research Advocacy and Development (MACRAD) director, Ephraim Mtombeni said it is unprofessional and wrong for the Army to deploy in a civilian area without giving clear information to allay inevitable fear.
Mtombeni said what raised more eyebrows is that Zanu PF District Coordinating Committee (DCC) chairperson for Chiredzi Siyaki Mundungehama is doing the public relations for the Army by issuing statements to villagers. He added:

ZDF should make use of areas like Gonarenzhou. The presence of ZDF in Chilonga without clear communication instills fear in communities. Further, Zanu PF should not issue statements on behalf of ZDF. These are distinct institutions which must perform their duties as stipulated by the law.

Mundungehama’s statement to the villagers indicated that soldiers (ZDF) will be displaying their drills (Military Exercises) in most of the wards if not all, starting from October 7, 2021, until the end of the month.
It urged villagers to carry on with their usual chores and not to be afraid of them, “but you should respect them because they are your children, brothers, fathers, mothers, and sisters who protect you from the enemies.”

Heavily Armed Soldiers Deployed In Chiredzi

A Gweru farmer on Monday stumbled on a plastic bag with three AK47 assault rifles on a plot on the outskirts of Gweru. 
Gweru police have since requested help from the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) bomb disposal unit and army engineers to inspect the bag. 

Mr Malvin Chimwe (40) of Mkoba 14 was digging on a small plot along the Lower Gweru Road when his hoe hit the pack of three AK47s assault riffles stashed in a plastic bag underground. He said:

At first, I thought my long and sharpened hoe had ripped into debris of some sort, but when I swung the hoe a second time I realised there were metal objects.
</blockquote>
Mr Chimwe said he was frightened when he then realised that his hoe had hit some dangerous weapons and quickly dashed to an elderly man a stone throw away. 
The elderly man confirmed that Chimwe had stumbled upon guns. Chimwe then made a report at Nehanda Police Station in Mkoba. 

Mr Chimwe said police came and sealed off the area and sought the services of army experts.
A police source close to investigations said the army bomb disposal experts and engineers discovered that in addition to the AK47 assault rifles, there were also four fully charged AK 47 magazines, again hidden underground.
The AK47 rifles were rusty, a sign that shows that they had been hidden underground probably for more than 5 years.
Similarly, the four fully charged AK47 magazines were also looking old and were wrapped in a plastic material.
While some in the area wondered if the weapons had been hidden during the liberation war, police sources said there was a possibility that the weapons could have been used and abandoned by armed robbers.

Farmer Stumbles On A Plastic Bag With Three AK47 Assault Rifles

An examination cheating scandal has rocked the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) after over 100 soldiers reportedly forged Ordinary Level (O’ Level) mathematics results to secure promotions.
A pass in O’ Level maths is one of the prerequisites for junior commissioned officers to sit for military examinations before they can be promoted to the rank of captain.
The NewsHawks was told that the officers have been given up to November 2022 to present genuine results slips which are confirmed by the Zimbabwe School Examinations Council.
The publication further reports that the army careers department and units last year conducted an investigation into exams cheating which revealed that the officers had misrepresented to the military that they had passed the subject when they had not. A military source said:
<blockquote>_A lieutenant can actually be promoted to the rank of captain without undergoing PCC although they will be required to under the training at Nyanga’s All Arms Battle School._
_Internal investigators worked with the Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (Zimsec) and it is during these investigations that it was found out that the passes which the officers had presented were forged. By then, all those who sat and passed the examinations had already been promoted to the rank of captain. The board saw it fit to instruct them to rewrite the exams instead of stripping them of their ranks due to the large numbers. So as it stands their results have been nullified._
_The officers were working with colleges and some Zimsec officials who failed to beat the system in terms of authenticating the forged results._</blockquote>
Officer cadets, who undergo 24 months of training at the Gweru-based Zimbabwe Military Academy (ZMA), are expected to have at least six points at Advanced Level and five O’ Level subjects, including maths and English, to get enrolled.
ZMA can waiver maths for a number of reasons including that potential recruits are from marginalised societies where the pass rate is low due to their peculiar circumstances.
After the pass-out parade at the ZNA, the officers are deployed to various units as second-lieutenants and after making a firm commitment to continue to serve, they then undergo the platoon commanders’ course (PCC) at a later stage.
At this stage maths then becomes a must for one to sit these examinations.

An army helicopter crashed in Ruwa this Friday. The chopper caught fire, only remains are seen in the video below. Details are still sketchy.
People who reportedly attended the scene say a Black Thunder helicopter crashed in Pioneer road near Mapfeni dam Goromomonzi and all who were aboard were burnt beyond recognition.
The flying bird dropped on top of a house and some of the occupants died when the house caught fire. Pioneer road is from James farm.
They add that it looks like there were four (4) people aboard, 3 males and one (1) female. The lady is the one who can be identified. The added:

Vose four vafa no survivor takwanisa kuona kamwana kadiki sucking age kakuvara zvakaipisisa. Helicopter dzava2 neine Red Cross sign. [We arrived with at least 7 fire extinguishers to quench the fire with the help of the local people who were using buckets to pour water. All four who were aboard died, no survovor. We only saw a very young kid who sustained serious injuries. There are two helicopters involved now with another one which has a Red Cross sign.]</blockquote>

It is alleged that the robbers have been to Chegutu, Kadoma, Chinhoyi, Christon Bank and Mazowe. We present below ZNA’s statement in full.
<blockquote>ARMED ROBBERIES ALERT: CRIMINALS USES THE ZNA NAME AND UNIFORMS
The Zimbabwe National Army would like to alert members of the public that a gang of armed robbers is on the prowl in Mashonaland West Province. The robbers are using the name of the ZNA and ZRP to dupe unsuspecting victims of their valuable properties. They gain access into private premises upon production of fake search warrants.
The gang, numbering between four and six criminals, will be dressed in ZNA camouflage uniforms and others in civilian attire acting as Criminal Investigations Department police officers.
The robbers then produce these fake search warrants to unsuspecting individuals. Whilst the victims will be in a state of panic and fear they then confiscate goods and other valuables. The fake warrants are purportedly signed by the Commander Defence Forces claiming that the bearer has the authority to search premises or individuals and seize any articles which may lead to acts of terrorism.
Unsuspecting members of the public have resultantly been robbed and there have been a number of reports of such robberies through the use of these fake search warrants in Chegutu, Kadoma, Chinhoyi, Christon Bank and Mazowe.
The Zimbabwe National Army would like to categorically state that it is not conducting any such operations and all those purporting to be representing the organisation in such acts are criminals. The fake search warrants have been recovered and are being used by the police as exhibits.
Members of the public who are approached or come across any of these bogus soldiers and police officers must immediately report to their nearest Police Station or the Zimbabwe Military Police Investigations Branch, on cellphone number 0712 831 705 or landline (0242) 252 094.</blockquote>

Former ZIPRA liberation warfighters have implored the Zimbabwean military and other security agents to refrain from harassing citizens during enforcement of Covid-19 prevention measures.
The call for restraint is made after Vice President Constantino who is also the minister of Health and Child Care on Saturday announced fresh lockdown measures.
Speaking to <a class="vglnk" href="http://newzimbabwe.com/" rel="nofollow">NewZimbabwe.com</a> ahead of the commencement of the new lockdown regime this Tuesday, ZIPRA Veterans Association deputy secretary-general, Job Ndlovu, said:
<blockquote>We are appealing to government through Defence Minister Oppah Muchinguri and Commander Defence Forces Philip Valerio Sibanda to make sure that citizens are not harassed by the security forces.
The security sector is there to protect the citizens of this country. They are not there to abuse and threaten people.
People are afraid to see heavily armed soldiers wielding AKs in the streets.
People should be more afraid of Covid-19 than soldiers who are peacekeepers.
Zimbabwe is a democratic country where people should not be afraid of their army.
We applaud the government for introducing the lockdown measures to curb the spreading of Covid-19, but we are very concerned that the government has not announced anything on the issue of social welfare on those people whose income is going to be affected by the lockdown.
It was better if the government was going to provide food hampers to the people like what is happening in other countries.
People are coming from the holiday and they do not have any money.</blockquote>
During previous lockdown regimes, soldiers and police officers who were implementing the measures used sheer force leaving some injured.
A handful of cases on the brutality of state security forces are still pending.
Fears abound that the “overzealous” security officers will once again violate human rights in the name of enforcing the lockdown.

Lockdown: War Vets Call For Security Agents Restraint

Harare-based journalist, Paidamoyo Muzulu has said security forces in Zimbabwe are being given elite treatment compared to all other government workers.
The NewsDay columnist speaks amid reports that soldiers recently received nearly $8 000 while police officers received $5 000 compared to a paltry $1 400 teachers received in allowances. Muzulu said:
<blockquote>… the situation has dramatically changed in the two years post the November 2017 military coup. The boys in uniform have a new status — they are more equal to other civil servants because of their collective contribution in the making of the new regime.
Treasury initially announced that it was funding for the re-establishment of garrison shops to cater for the boys in uniform’s needs in their cantonments.</blockquote>
Other government workers including health caregivers and teachers have been embarking on flash protests over poor salaries and poor working conditions.
It has to be noted however that preferential treatment of the security forces did not start when President Mnangagwa ascended to power in 2017 as his predecessor, the late Robert Mugabe’s administration on several occasions allocated more resources compared to other sectors.
Analysts say the resources dished to the security sector could be used to revive al the collapsed sectors for the benefit of the whole nation.

"The Boys In Uniform Have A New Status," NewsDay Columnist On Soldiers, Civil Servants Salaries' Disparity

Three police officers and a soldier died on the spot on Sunday when a police vehicle they were travelling in veered off the road, hit a telecommunication pole and rock before overturning.
The accident occurred at 106-kilometre peg along Harare-Shamva-Madziwa Road at around 4 pm.
The Herald reports that six were injured and are admitted at Shamva and Bindura Hospitals.
The tragedy was confirmed by police national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi who said names of the deceased will be released after their next of kin have been advised.
Nyathi expressed his condolences to families of the deceased and a speedy recovery to the injured.

FULL TEXT: Health Ministry Approaches The Army As Nurses Go On Strike

The Zimbabwe National Army is reportedly seeking to evict 100 villagers in Wengezi, Manicaland, saying they were illegally resettled in a military cantonment 36 years ago.
3 Brigade commander, Brigadier General George Chitsva has already written to the Rufuka Village 14B residents giving them until June 30 to leave the area or face eviction.
The letter dated May 7 which is believed to have been delivered to the villagers last week observes that the army was allocated the land in 2003. Reads the letter in part:

<div>You are expected to comply by vacating the cantonment area by June 30, 2020 or face forceful removal. Please cooperate and comply.</div>

<div>This letter serves to remind you that you must vacate from Wengezi Military Training Area by June 30, 2020.</div>

<div>The area is reserved exclusively for military use as provided in the Government Gazette No 82 of 2003.</div>

<div>A representative of the villagers, Stephen Choto, refuted claims made by the army in the letter that the villagers settled themselves in the area, adding that they were settled there legally around 1984.</div>

<div>He said they were shocked and that the army is now saying the area was gazetted in 2003 and we were never informed of any such development.</div>

<div>He said they will engage Ministry of Lands on the matter.</div>

Army Evicting Villagers Who Were "Illegally" Resettled 36 Years Ago

A payslip of an officer in the Zimbabwe National Army has suggested that some soldiers are getting ZW$3 683.07 as their salary.
Using the intebank rate (25), it means they are getting US$147.732 and about US$52.62 dollars at the parallel market rate.
This comes when inflation in the country continues to rise unabated.
Commenting on the payslip, Alex Tawanda Magaisa, the former Chief of Staff for the late founding leader of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), Morgan Tsvangirai said:
<blockquote>The irony is the soldier earning these crumbs while political elites make millions through corrupt deals will beat up &amp; shoot at his fellow citizens who are seeking a better life. And fellow leaders in the region turn a blind eye to this state brutality. Be careful of them.</blockquote>
A South African national, <a href="https://twitter.com/BlessingsRamoba/status/1269344564189560837">Blessing Ramoba</a> said the payslip must serve as a lesson that once the South African economy has collapsed, it will be difficult to come back.
Ramoba warned against “politicians who have no knowledge of economics.”

The Zimbabwe Republic Police is reportedly telling members of the public who are in Harare City Centre to clear the city “now!”
Advocate Fadzayi Mahere, the spokesperson of the opposition MDC Alliance posted on Twitter this morning saying police are moving around town instructing the public to leave the city. She posted:
<blockquote>Just stepped out of the High Court where I was arguing a case. Armed police and soldiers with a loudspeaker telling us to clear the street. “Budai mudhorobha.”

The police were this morning turning away vehicles which were en route to town with reports suggesting that only those deemed to be providing essential services were being allowed to pass.

PICTURE: "Clear The City Now" - Police, Soldiers Tell The Public

A truck carrying soldiers deployed to enforce the COVID-19 lockdown order in Mashonaland East province was involved in an accident on Monday while chasing a commuter omnibus in Murewa.
The truck veered off the road and landed on its side injuring soldiers aboard. Eyewitnesses told NewsDay that 
army officials were pursuing a commuter omnibus ferrying people towards Mutawatawa when the truck overturned.
One anonymous eyewitness said:
<blockquote>The truck was pursuing a commuter omnibus while effecting lockdown rules at Murewa Business Centre.
It is during the chase when the truck was involved in an accident after veering off the road. For the past three days, Murewa Business Centre was a no-go area as the officers were a bit ruthless.</blockquote>
Another witness said some soldiers who were on board sustained some injuries.
Meanwhile, Mashonaland East provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tendai Mwanza said he was yet to 
get the details of the accident.

Soldiers Narrowly Escape Death While Chasing Commuter Omnibus

A 27-year-old Bindura man, Tichaona Maforo was recently arrested and dragged to court for impersonating a soldier and controlling mealie-meal queues.
Representing the state, Prosecutor Thembinkosi Mananga told the court that on April 13, Maforo, who was in civilian clothes, joined members of the Zimbabwe National Army in controlling a mealie-meal queue while pretending to be a soldier.
Maforo reportedly followed soldiers on the 21st of April and joined in the controlling of the queue.
The matter came to light when one of the soldiers, Isaac Ngwana (24), quizzed him about his credentials.
He was arrested and he has appeared before magistrate Tinashe Ndokera and was fined $2 000 for impersonating a soldier and controlling mealie-meal queues.
The magistrate also said that failure to pay the fine, Maforo would spend 40 days behind bars.

Fake Soldier Arrested At A Mealie-Meal Queue

Soldiers who were critically injured in an accident that happened along the Kariba-Makuti Road on Sunday have been transferred to Harare for more advanced treatment while the rest of the 21 injured remained at Kariba District Hospital.
The development was announced by the Director Army public relations Lieutenant Colonel Alphios Makotore on Monday. He said:
<blockquote>Initially, the injured were evacuated to Kariba District Hospital to receive medical assistance. Five of the seriously injured were then airlifted by an Air Force of Zimbabwe helicopter to Harare.
One member who has serious head injuries has been admitted at Parirenyatwa Hospital for specialist attention and his condition is stable.</blockquote>
He also said that four of the injured were now receiving treatment at Josiah Magama Tongogara Barracks, while the most critically injured is at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals.
Makotore added that investigations to establish the cause of the accident noted that the driver lost control of the vehicle while on a sharp and steep curve.
One soldier died in the accident.

Soldiers Critically Injured In Kariba Airlifted To Harare For Advanced Treatment

The High Court of Zimbabwe has this Tuesday ordered Zimbabwe Republic Police, the army and other law enforcement officers to respect human rights, dignity and fundamental freedoms.
The determination was on a case in which Lucia Masvondo and the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights challenged brutality on Masvondo.
