Young Zimbabweans are leaving the country in large numbers since the disputed 23 August Harmonised Elections, a new report has shown.
Most of the emigrants are destined for South Africa, Botswana, the United Kingdom (UK), the United States and Canada.
The majority of those who are leaving the country were said to be frustrated by diminishing economic opportunities.
According to a recent report by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), Canadian, US and UK embassies have been busy processing visas for Zimbabweans intending to leave the country.
The report says 55% of people leaving the country were from Matabeleland South and 14% from Harare. The report says:

Seventy per cent of migrants indicated that South Africa was their final intended destination.
Of the migrants going to South Africa, 37% were looking for livelihood opportunities, 19% were looking for employment and 15% were travelling for family reunification.
Twenty-six per cent of those travelling to South Africa were females aged between 26–35 years.
Of the surveyed migrants, 10% indicated that Botswana was their final intended destination.

The IOM report said 48% of those leaving for Botswana were looking for employment, while 16% were travelling to conduct commercial activities.
The report also said 12% were looking for livelihood opportunities, while 28% of those travelling to Botswana were males aged between 26 and 35 years. It added:

Of those looking for employment, 34% were planning to stay for a period between six months and 12 months, whilst 8% indicated that they were planning to stay in Botswana for more than a year.

Responding to questions from the <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/theindependent/local-news/article/200018316/zim-youths-flee-in-droves">Zimbabwe Independent,</a> Respect Gono, director-general at the Department of Immigration said Zimbabweans leaving the country were refusing to fill in departure forms.
As a result, records at the Department of Immigration did not show an increase in migration. She said:

Zimbabwean nationals leaving the country have resisted filling out departure forms hence making it difficult for the department to collect such statistics.
</blockquote>
Gono also said officers at various ports had not reported any significant increase in the number of youths leaving the country after the elections.

Young Zimbabweans Leaving In Huge Numbers | Report

Award-winning journalist Hopewell Chin’ono has advised young Zimbabwe to leave the country for greener pastures if they can.
Posting on his X Page, the 52-year-old said that Zimbabwe is a broken country with no opportunities for young people except for criminals or those linked to political elites. 
Chin’ono said there is nothing wrong with young Zimbabweans migrating to the United Kingdom and starting as carers.
He also said Zimbabwe “is a mess, it will be a mess for a long time unless a miracle happens or someone fearless emerges to take on the corrupt elites and bring revolutionary change.” Wrote Chin’ono:

My advice to young Zimbabwean people from the bottom of my heart speaking from experience is that if you can leave the country, PLEASE LEAVE NOW!
Don’t waste your youthful days doing nothing when people of your age are progressing elsewhere.
I left Zimbabwe at 23 in 1994 and was able to build the foundation for the life I live today in Britain from my education to my award-winning professional career.
I would never have done it in Zimbabwe with only ONE TV station owned by the Government and a collapsed economy run by corrupt politicians.
I secured visas for all my young family members in the past 20 years so that they could have the same head-start I got in life because I knew that they would grow old with nothing to their name if they stayed in Zimbabwe.
Some have now moved from Britain to Australia because they had an opportunity to build their lives in a country where things worked.
The politicians in Zimbabwe have no viable plan for you, you either choose propaganda or you choose to build yourself.
Zimbabwe is a broken nation with no opportunities for young people except for those of a criminal type or those linked to political elites.
I am 52 years old, there are people of my age who have never had a title deed in their name, and there are people of my age who have never been on holiday, the same will happen to you if you stick around doing nothing hoping for a miracle to happen.
There are many opportunities for young people across the world, to start as a carer in Britain and build themselves up.
Don’t say that nobody didn’t tell you! Life is one big road with loads of signs, you choose which sign to follow.
To those who have left the country, learn something from my journey, DON’T forget those that you left behind.
Sending them money to buy bread is a sign of responsibility, but it won’t change their lives, you will end up resenting them because they will become an irritating financial burden to you. Help them get out!
I want to end by saying this, politicians earn their living by selling dreams, it is up to you whether you want to live in Lala-Land or you want to do something about your sorry circumstances.
Zimbabwe is a mess, it will be a mess for a long time unless a miracle happens or someone fearless emerges to take on the corrupt elites and bring revolutionary change.
The current political actors have no ability to change anything or to help you change your lives. LEAVE and if you do, remember those that you left behind.

"Please Leave Now", Chin'ono Advises Young Zimbabweans To Seek Greener Pastures Abroad

Zimbabweans based in South Africa have welcomed the decision by the Government to establish e-passport and national identity card application and enrolment centres in Cape Town and Johannesburg.
The Registrar General’s Office recently announced that the centres will be opened in the two South African cities before the end of 2023.
Currently, Zimbabweans living in South Africa who need passports can access application forms for the passports in the neighbouring country but have to travel back home to submit the forms.
Speaking to <a href="https://www.sundaynews.co.zw/zimbabweans-welcome-passport-offices-in-south-africa/">The Sunday News</a>, the chairman of the Zimbabwean Community in South Africa Ngqabutho Mabhena said the move was a welcome development. He said:

We welcome the move by the Zimbabwean Government to allow access to passports in Johannesburg and Cape Town because previously people have been struggling.
They were able to access application forms for the passports but to have them submitted at the passport offices in Zimbabwe was the challenge, if you are a Mabhena, a person with the same surname had to submit your papers and it was problematic.
We are glad that people will now be able to get their passports from here.

Christine Mainato who resides in Johannesburg, said that applying for passports has been a nightmare. She said:

All these years, we had to return home two months before your passport expires and apply for one and return to South Africa while it is being processed.
Some were then forced to apply for emergency passport services which were too expensive for most of us.
This is because we never had the luxury of staying for a month in Zimbabwe waiting for the passport due to work commitments.
But I am glad now we can do it from where we are.

She said she will be able to even apply for e-passports for her children born in South Africa who did not have the travel documents.
According to the Civil Registry Department of Zimbabwe, more than 100 000 e-passports have been issued since the introduction of e-passports in January 2022.

Zimbabweans In South Africa Welcome Passport Offices In Joburg, Cape Town

South Africa’s Border Management Authority (BMA) Commissioner Mike Masiapato has said Zimbabweans who cross the border into South Africa without passports to buy scarce goods and go back to their country are not necessarily criminals. 
Speaking on the SA television channel Newzroom Africa, Masiapato said BMA is not targetting all Zimbabweans who cross the border into South Africa without passports but those involved in criminal activities such as smuggling contraband.
Masiapato conceded that passports are very expensive for some Zimbabweans to acquire in their home country yet they need to buy groceries in Musina for re-sale back home. He said:

We have committed to start engaging along the separation of the various groups of people that we are dealing with so that we can be able to isolate those individuals who are supposed to be a target of law enforcers, those who are supposed to be the criminals.
If you were to look at the situation between us and Zimbabwe, it basically presents a number of groupings for different purposes.
A typical example is… we have a lot of Zimbabweans who have documents, who basically come into South Africa in Musina town in particular to procure normal foodstuffs, things that they need to go and sell back in Zimbabwe primarily because they are not able to access them on the Zimbabwean side either because they are too expensive or they are unavailable. Those ones we facilitate on a daily basis.
But there is a second group which is fairly the same kind of people who want to come and buy things and go sell them but they don’t have passports.
The reason they don’t have passports is the expensive nature of the reality of getting a passport on the Zimbabwean side and don’t they access them.
They are not necessarily criminals, they just don’t have passports. So they will then cross the border into South Africa and buy things.
So those are the ones that we are going to be able to have a mechanism as to how do we address those groups of individuals with the Zimbabweans.
Then we separate those who must be the real target of our work and those who are pushing illegal things.

BMA is now the third armed service in South Africa after the South African National Defence Force and the South African Police Service.
It is mandated to perform border management functions within ports of entry as well as the law enforcement area.

Zimbabweans Crossing Into SA Without Passports To Buy Groceries Are Not Criminals, Says Border Management Authority Official

The Zimbabwe Consulate in Johannesburg, South Africa, has warned Zimbabweans about a fake website purportedly representing the Civil Registry’s Office of Zimbabwe.
In a public notice dated 03 October 2023, the Consulate said fraudsters and scammers are behind the website, www.makombeofficial.org.
The consulate also flagged an organisation called “Zim Connect” which claims to recover lost documents such as plastic and metal IDs, Passports, Marriage Certificates, Birth Certificates, Non-Marriage Certificates and Police Clearances. Reads the notice:

The Consulate wishes to advise members of the public that there is a fake website by the name: www.makombeofficial.org purporting to represent the Civil Registry’s Office of Zimbabwe.
The fake website, which is also published on various social media platforms, falsely purports to provide the general Zimbabwean public at home and abroad, with a facility to apply for all registry documents such as Birth certificates, National Registration Cards and Passports online.
Please note that the fake website is the work of fraudsters and scammers who intend to defraud unsuspecting members of the public of their hard-earned money.
Furthermore, the Consulate is aware of fliers issued by a shadowy organization calling itself ‘Zim Connect’, which is falsely purporting to recover lost documents such as plastic and metal IDs, Passports, Marriage Certificates, Birth Certificates, Non-Marriage Certificates and Police Clearances.
The Consulate further reiterates that it does not have agents who act on its behalf in the provision of civil documents and consular services.
Members of the public are advised to remain vigilant and avoid falling victim to the above-captioned fraudsters.

Fraudsters Target Zimbabweans In South Africa

South African opposition politician Gayton Mackenzie has urged the Department of Home Affairs to deal with Zimbabweans resident in that country who will protest against the results of Zimbabwe’s Harmonised Elections.
Mackenzie, who is the leader of the Patriot Alliance (PA), said the Department of Home Affairs should deport all Zimbabwean nationals in South Africa who have vowed to march to their embassy to protest against election results from the 23 August Harmonised Elections. He said:

Home Affairs should stand ready at the Zimbabwean Embassy to deport the whole lot.
</blockquote>
Reports indicate that scores of unhappy Zimbabweans in SA were planning to march to their embassy in Pretoria in protest of the election results.
The general feeling is that the elections were rigged, unfair, and unequally conducted.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa was declared the winner of the presidential race and his ZANU PF party won the majority of seats in the National Assembly.
Mackenzie said Zimbabwean nationals who chose to protest in South Africa against Mnangagwa and ZANU PF are “cowards”. He said:

Mnangagwa won the election by 52.6% of the votes, slightly beating CCC leader Nelson Chamisa, who received 44% of the votes.

SA Opposition Leader, Gayton Mackenzie, Labels Zimbabwean Nationals "Cowards"

Former Finance Minister Tendai Biti said that Zimbabweans now face another five years of “frightening” grinding poverty, corruption and underdevelopment after ZANU PF won the 2023 Harmonised Elections.
ZANU PF candidate Emmerson Mnangagwa won 52.6% of the votes cast thereby avoiding a run-off.
Biti has implored SADC to ensure that it finds lasting solutions to Zimbabwe’s perennial problems after the regional body condemned the manner in which the 23 to 24 August elections were conducted. <a href="https://twitter.com/BitiTendai/status/1695740830063993324?s=20">Said Biti</a>:
<blockquote>
It’s “de javu” once more. Another contested and bitter election. A ritualistic process rejected even by the pro-status regional body SADC.
To Zimbabweans, it is a prospect of a further 5 years of attrition, poverty, extraction, corruption and underdevelopment that is most frightening.
Zimbabweans deserve better. They deserve a time-out from 44 years of banditry. The hope now is for the regional body to accept its report and realize that the Zimbabwean crisis requires external agency in pursuit of a lasting solution. Flawed processes produce illegitimate outcomes.
</blockquote>
The country’s main opposition party, CCC, has rejected the presidential election results, insisting that it won but its victory was “stolen”.

Zimbabweans Face Another Five Years Of "Frightening" Poverty, Corruption - Biti

A 45-year-old Zimbabwean biker who crossed into South Africa illegally was arrested on Friday after a high-speed chase in Tembisa with officers from the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD).
The spokesperson for the EMPD Constable Marie Mashishi said the man, who was riding a motorbike, initially ignored instructions to stop and later produced a “fake” Zimbabwean driving licence. <a href="https://www.iol.co.za/news/crime-and-courts/not-so-fast-food-delivery-biker-in-high-speed-chase-with-cops-arrested-for-fake-zim-licence-in-ekurhuleni-2dfb1ff1-23da-4a7e-b30d-d97f52ce329f">IOL</a> quoted Mashishi as saying:

On Friday 17 March 2023 at 1 pm, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Tembisa precinct officers arrested a 45-year-old male driver for being in possession of a doubtful official document in the Tembisa area.
Metro police officers busy with law enforcement on Andrew Mapheto Drive near Esangweni section made an attempt to stop a motorcyclist for riding inconsiderately.
A biker ignored instructions and a chase ensued, until he was cornered, on Straight-line Road, near the Caprivi entertainment centre.
The undocumented lawbreaker, from Zimbabwe, was handcuffed and taken to the Rabasotho police station after producing a fraudulent Zimbabwean-issued driver’s licence to officers.
A case of fraud has been registered and charges under the Immigration Act could be added against him.

Mashishi said the Zimbabwean man is set to appear before the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court soon.
The biker’s red Big Boy scooter was impounded by the police and was towed to the Tembisa EMPD precinct for safekeeping.

Zimbabwean Biker Arrested After High Speed Chase With South African Cops

A South African soldier and a Zimbabwean national were arrested in Musina, Limpopo Province for allegedly attacking police and helping six-armed robbery suspects awaiting trial to escape from police custody on Monday morning.
Kedibone Albert Langa (38), a member of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and Thabani Sibanda (28) from Zimbabwe appeared in a Louis Trichardt court on Tuesday.
The duo was remanded in custody to 22 March this year.
In a statement on Tuesday, Limpopo Province South African Police Services (SAPS) spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said one of those arrested was a brother of one of the escapees. He said:

The (SAPS) Team followed up on information received about the suspects and arrested a 28-year-old Zimbabwean national who is believed to be the brother of one of the escapees and a member of the South African National Defence Force aged 38.

The six Zimbabweans, Forward Shumba, 26, Shingirai Nyandome, 32, Brilliant Sibanda, 26, Erick Sithole, 35, Moses Zambara, 32 and Alex Nkomo, 35, were being transported by police when their accomplices violently freed them.
Langa and Sibanda are believed to have been among the suspects who engaged in a shoot-out with SAPS officers to free the six men.

South African Soldier Arrested For Aiding Zimbabwean Robbers Escape

Three engineering lecturers from Zimbabwe and Rwanda whose contracts were terminated by a college in South Africa withdrew their case against the college in the court on Tuesday, 14 March.
The lecturers, whose contracts were terminated in January by the Port Elizabeth TVET College, withdrew their case today after the College agreed in the Port Elizabeth Labour Court that it will not retrench them.
<a href="https://www.groundup.org.za/article/dismissed-immigrant-lecturers-win-their-labour-court-battle/">GroundUp</a> reported that the fourth lecturer who was also dismissed, who is Zimbabwean, has not been appearing in court because he has another case pending with the college.
The four have been lecturing in engineering for several years.
On 12 January 2023, the college management wrote letters to the lecturers informing them that their services would be terminated on 1 February.
They approached the Labour Court which granted a provisional interdict in February setting aside the termination of their employment.
Lawyers representing Port Elizabeth TVET College then asked the lecturers to withdraw their case, but they refused.
Sangolinye Ngqungwana, a lecturer at the same college and shop steward for the National Union of Public Service and Allied Workers (NUPSAW), said the college had now sent the court an affidavit. Said Ngqungwana:

That changes the ball game completely. With the affidavit we have proof of them confirming under oath that they are not going to retrench. For that reason, we decided to withdraw the case.
</blockquote>
Deputy Principal Dorian Baartzes said the affidavit was to notify the court that the college was not opposing the case brought by the lecturers and had complied with the interdict.
Baartzes said they will comply with the Labour Regulations Act if it embarked on any retrenchment process.

SA: Dismissed Zimbabwean Lecturers Withdraw Labour Court Case

Six Zimbabwean nationals escaped from police custody in South Africa on Monday morning after their alleged accomplices engaged in a shoot-out with South African police to free them.
In a statement, the South African Police Services (SAPS) said the incident occurred outside Louis Trichardt, some 120 kilometres south of Beitbridge.
SAPS identified the six as Forward Shumba, 26, Shingirai Nyandome, 32, Brilliant Sibanda, 26, Erick Sithole, 35, Moses Zambara, 32 and Alex Nkomo, 35.
All six were awaiting trial for crimes committed in South Africa and were being transported by police when their accomplices violently freed them. Reads the statement:

The Police in Makhado have launched a massive manhunt for a group of heavily armed suspects who attacked and shot at Police members transporting six awaiting trial prisoners and managed to free them this morning, Monday 13 March 2023.
The suspects thereafter took the six prisoners and sped off in a grey Mercedes Benz and a white Toyota Bakkie.
The incident occurred along the Vivo road next to the first Sxhoemansdal turnoff outside Louis Trichardt… All escapees are Zimbabwean nationals.

Six Zimbabwean Prisoners Escape South African Police Custody After Gun Battle

A South African human rights activist and lawyer, Jos Venter, said it is illegal to deny children of undocumented foreign nationals entry at any school in that country.
Venter said this in response to Patriotic Alliance leader Gayton McKenzie who had called for the children of foreign nationals to be refused entry to South African schools.
Venter said McKenzie’s call was unlawful because education was a basic human right. He said:

It is absolutely illegal and Gayton McKenzie is wrong in his view, wrong in the law and at a practical level, the implementation of the law is problematic.
But we have the 2019 judgment from the Eastern Cape division of the high court, where the court expressly said that, based on a lack of documents, children can’t be refused admission to public schools.
</blockquote>
Last week, the South African pressure group <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Operation_Dudula">Operation Dudula</a>, said its members will camp outside schools across Gauteng Province to prevent undocumented foreign children and teachers to be part of day one of school.
