Activists in Bulawayo and Harare have approached the High Court after police in the two cities banned protests which were planned for this Thursday.
Going under the banner ‘This Constitution, Our Constitution Campaign’, the Bulawayo march is being organised by the Zimbabwe National Students Union Bulawayo Youth Arise, Zimbabwe Activists Alliance, Zimbabwe Liberations Peace Forum, Combined Mutare Residents Trust, Zimbabwe Activists Alliance, and Tajamuka, among others.
The activists approached the police on November 10 seeking permission to hold a march on November 17 in the city’s central business district. In response, the police on Monday denied the grouping the authority to march, saying they did not follow the proper procedures. In Harare, the police blocked the #Munuwesemuroad demonstration and in a letter dated, 12 November, 2016, Officer Commanding Harare central district, Chief Superintendent Chizemo JT, directed the demonstrators to cancel their planned march.
The convenor of the umbrella body, Abigale Mupambi, criticised the police decision and said they would be approaching the courts to have the ban overturned.
