Police are not allowed to torture suspects: Mnangagwa

Vice-President Emmerson Mnangagwa who is also the Minister of Justice said that police and other law enforcement agents are not allowed to torture arrested people as part of their investigations.

Mnangagwa made the assertion in Parliament after MDC-T MP Emma Muzondiwa asked if the police were allowed to torture people under investigation.

The Vice President responded with:

The government policy and legislation forbids administration and application of torture because Zimbabwe is party to the international treaty against torture.

If there are specific incidences the MP must report the cases to the ministry.

However, the Vice President conceded that Zimbabwe was yet to ratify the treaty on torture, meaning that it is yet to be made official.
