The Zimbabwe Anti-corruption Commission (ZACC) has revealed that it fears for the lives of its members after receiving threats from cabinet ministers and other high-profile individuals. This information was contained in a report which was presented to parliament by the Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa. Part of the report reads:
In the period under review, ZACC investigated a number of corruption cases, large and complex, involving high profile figures, including Cabinet Ministers as a result of public reports, information and inquiries among other sources
There were incidences of political interference, including threats by ministers against ZACC officers. This compromises investigations and puts the life of officers in real danger
Last year ZACC made headlines after it tried to arrest Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development Professor Jonathan Moyo for misappropriating funds from Zimdef. The case is still before the courts after Moyo made a Constitutional Court application challenging ZACC’s power to arrest him.
