ZEC turns down nurses & doctors request to vote from their workplaces

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) yesterday turned down a request by local doctors and nurses who were represented by the Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors’ Association, Zimbabwe Nurses’ Association and Zimbabwe Association of Doctors for Human Rights (ZADHR), to be allowed to vote from their respective work places. ZEC chairperson Rita Makarau said that the law does not allow them to vote from their workplaces even though they are on national duty.

Said Makarau:

The law does not provide for postal voting beyond diplomats, and at the same time, the legal framework does not allow for out-of-ward individuals to vote even though they will be on national duty.

However ZADHR executive director Calvin Fambirai said it was important for nurses and doctors to register in the wards that they work in.
