Former Cairns Foods employee wins $2,6 million case after he was fired 25 years ago

Mr Stanford Selemani who is a former employee of Cairns Foods Limited, won an award of more than $2,6 million after he was fired in 1992 on charges of absenteeism following his admission at Harare Psychiatric Unit for treatment.

Selemani successfully sued Cairns Foods at the Labour Court and High Court which ruled that the firm should have terminated his contract on medical grounds, since he had offered to retire on medical grounds. He obtained a writ of execution, which enables him to attach and auction Cairns property to recover $2 614 380 plus interest that is due to him. Cairns Foods is now challenging the writ of execution granted against it, saying Selemani’s son Brian who was appointed as his father’s representative because of his mental condition, was not involved in the writ case. Selemani has however recovered.
