Man in court for insulting ZRP officers over corruption

Zephania Virimai (32) of Chiredzi appeared before Chiredzi Magistrate Tafadzwa Mhlanga on Thursday 14 September 2017 facing charges of undermining police authority. He allegedly insulted two Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) officers. He accused the officers of depositing funds collected from members of the public through corrupt means.

The Prosecutors allege that Virimai insulted Lazarus Nyahonzo and Slyna Nyamaropa, who were depositing some cash at the CBZ bank branch in Chiredzi, saying:

Mbavha idzo ngadzibvepo (Thieves move away from there)

Zvimapurisa zvinobhenga mari yecorruption (Rogue police officers who bank corruption money.)

The prosecutors allege that there was a real risk of engendering feelings or hostility towards such police officers or the police force or exposing the ZRP officers to contempt, ridicule or low esteem.

Virimai pleaded not guilty and the trial will continue on 4 October.
