Former Vice-President Phelekezela Mphoko has been advised by the government that he is free to return home. Mphoko is yet to return to Zimbabwe after the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) launched Operation Restore Legacy when he was in Japan on government business. Instead of returning home after he concluded his business in Japan, Mphoko proceeded to Botswana where he holds vast business interests. Mphoko is reported to be afraid to come back home as he fears that he may be arrested for corruption-related crimes or obstruction of justice after he stormed two police stations and ordered the officers to release people who had been arrested.
However, he is reported to have been ordered to leave Botswana by the 1st of December by his hosts. The Zimbabwean government, on the other hand, has said that Mphoko is welcome to return home.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services Mr George Charamba said:
Former Vice President Mphoko spoke to the President and was assured that he is free to return to Zimbabwe and contribute to the rebuilding of the nation.
Like any other Zimbabwean, he is free to come home and assist in growing the economy and the country. Hopefully, he will be making his way home soon.
