Traditional Chiefs Complain About Lack of Recognition

Speaking at the launch of the Zimbabwe Justice Sector Programme, Fortune Charumbira, the leader of the traditional chiefs complained about an apparent lack of recognition from the government at the inauguration of President Emmerson Mnangagwa in November. Said Charumbira:

Even the Head of State, I want to show you that these are realities that even learned people sometimes overlook. On the day he was inaugurated, we were all asked as chiefs to be there and we all came in nice gowns.

But the person, who wrote the salutations, forgot us. I didn’t hear about Chief Charumbira or any other chiefs and am sure it’s not his fault (Mnangagwa), but it’s the person who wrote the speech.

Last month Charumbira launched a vigorous defence of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s decision to hand over the cars to traditional chiefs. An unapologetic Charumbira said no one else deserved the cars as much as the chiefs. Said Charumbira.

Those vehicles are necessary for the status, dignity and respect of the traditional leaders. If anything, we deserve those cars more than anyone else in this country.
