I Resigned For The Sake Of Peace And Development in Zim: Mugabe Tells AU Chairperson

African Union (AU) chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat has said that former president Robert Mugabe claimed that he resigned because he wanted peace and development for the country. Said Mahamat,

I met him (Mugabe), we exchanged views, and he also explained why he resigned. It was for peace and development of the country. And we appreciated that very much.

This was the first time I was visiting the country. I could not go without meeting him. Since President Mugabe forms part of the heroes of who fought for the independence of Zimbabwe and the continent, he is a common heritage for us.

Mugabe finally stepped down after 37 years in power when the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) launched a military intervention code named Operation Restore Legacy in November last year.
