Secretary for War Veterans in the Zanu PF Politburo, Victor Matemadanda who is also Emmerson Mnangagwa’s ally said former President Robert Mugabe must use his cattle at Gushungo Dairy in Mazowe to compensate Gukurahundi victims in Matabeleland and Midlands provinces.
Matemadanda said this while addressing colleagues at Mutare Polytechnic College in Mutare on Friday. He also said Mugabe is sorely responsible for Gukurahundi because he did not consult anyone when he deployed the Fifth Brigade to Matabeleland in 1983. Said Matemadanda:
Gukuruhundi is now being portrayed as if it was war between Ndebeles and Shonas. This was war between Mugabe vs Ndebeles and the people of Zimbabwe. If we keep quiet we are wedged in between and we will continue being asked why we killed the Ndebeles. He was the Commander In Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces then. The Service Chiefs were sent on orders. Soldiers work under oath and they carry out orders. If they are instructed to kill their mothers and they don’t take orders they are killed. We should not leave people to get political mileage of the dead.
