Goods From Mphoko's Choppies Supermarkets Impounded, Donated After Failure To Pay Zimra

Former Vice president Phelekezela Mphoko’s Choppies Supermarkets had some of its stock confiscated by the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) after the business failed to pay duty. Some of the confiscated goods were donated to Bulawayo United Hospital (UBH) and Ingutsheni Hospital. Sources at Mpilo Hospital said,

Last week we received more than 50 cartons of 500 ml of Mayonnaise sauce from the government. The sauce was branded with the Choppies logo.

…We have already started serving our patients with the sauce.

Mphoko is currently locked in a battle to control the supermarket chain with former Botswana president Festus Mogae. Mogae is alleging that Mphoko owns only 7 percent of the supermarket chain, which he received to be the figurehead of the business as Zimbabwe did not permit foreigners to own more than 49 percent of any business.
