British PM Theresa May Elusive When Asked If She Endorses Mnangagwa

When asked during an interview with ENCA if she endorses President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s leadership and the legal processes around it, British Prime Minister was elusive.

She said Mnangagwa is the elected President and has taken a key step by setting up an inquiry into the violence that saw soldiers shooting and killing protesters on August 1. Said May:

Well I was pleased to hear that President Mnangagwa had said that he was setting up a commission into the violence that we have seen taking place recently. I think that is an important step for Zimbabwe. I know President Ramaphosa was at the inauguration in Zimbabwe only earlier this week. I think there is a real opportunity for Zimbabwe now and I look forward to Zimbabwe being able to grasp that opportunity for the future.

When asked if she was endorsing Mnangagwa’s presidency May said:

The president is an elected president. He is making an important step in saying that he setup a commission of inquiry into what has happened in relation to the violence. I think that is a very important signal from him about the Zimbabwe he wants to see for the future and a Zimbabwe that is taking the opportunities for its people for the future.
