SA Opposition Leader Wants South Africa To Secure Its Borders

Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane says his party’s immigration plan involves securing South Africa’s borders.

Maimane launched the party’s registration elections poster in Soweto. He said South Africa has to secure its borders to protect the rights of its citizens. Said Maimane:

For a country to work, you need to always ensure there’s rule of law. Everybody has to be registered. All we’re asking for is that we secure our borders so the rights of the citizens are protected….in all communities.

South Africa has become a place of refuge for Zimbabweans seeking employment opportunities. Last year, over 180,000 Zimbabwean nationals living in South Africa applied for official documentation to allow them to stay, work, study and conduct businesses legally in the country. Figures from South Africa’s 2011 Census show that there are about 1.7 million “non-South African citizens” living in South Africa. This number includes figures from other countries and not Zimbabwe alone.
