MDC leader Nelson Chamisa wants the formation of a transitional authority that will lead to fresh elections.
Chamisa has hitherto rejected to meet President Emmerson Mnangagwa for dialogue, demanding that MDC officials arrested during the January protests be released first.
In an interview with the Standard newspaper, MDC spokesperson Jacob Mafume said:
For us, it’s not about power-sharing. It’s about the need to create a life for the people. It’s about how do we bring an end to the suffering of the people.
That is what can make the party happy. That is what will make my president happy.[The process] has to lead to reforms politically and economically.
Dialogue should result in the adoption of a roadmap to legitimacy following last year’s shameful elections.
If there is agreement on the above, there must be an implementation mechanism, which in the MDC’s view, is a national transitional authority.
Chamisa and Mnangagwa have come under increasing pressure especially form the churches who see dialogue as the way forward to extricate the country from the economic mess it is in.
