Mwonzora Remembers His 1990 Victory With ZUM

MDC secretary-general Douglas Mwonzora reminisced of a victory he had in 1990 when he was involved in the crafting of the constitution of the then main opposition, the Zimbabwe Unity Movement (ZUM).

Mwonzora revealed that he was at one point detained at the notorious Whawha prison. The formation of ZUM forestalled ZANU PF’s designs to make Zimbabwe a one-party-state. Said Mwonzora:

Passing by Whawha prison yesterday made me remember how I was detained there in 1990. My crime was drafting the constitution of the then main opposition party ZUM. It was sweet pain because against the odds we defeated Zanu PF’s one-party state project.

Zimbabwe Unity Movement (ZUM) was a political party in Zimbabwe. Its president was Edgar Tekere. The party is known for having challenged the unofficial one-party system that was existent in Zimbabwe in the early 1990s.
