Former Deputy Finance Minister In Farm Dispute

The former Deputy Minister of Finance, Terrence Mukupe, is seeking to have resettled farmers at Mt Olympus Farm in Goromonzi evicted so that he can take over.

According to reports, Mukupe owns Farmtel Investments and the company has, through its lawyers Mangwana and partners, written to seven farmers instructing them to move off the land. A letter written by Farmtel to one of the farmers reads:

We represent Farmtel Investments (Pvt) Ltd, kindly note our interests.

Our instructions are to the effect that you are in unlawful occupation of a plot, Mt Olympus Farm Chishawasha B.

The said plot is under the control of our client, who was allocated and given developmental rights to the same by the Ministry of Local Government in 2016.

Your continued presence has hindered progress and the execution of the agreement between our client and the Ministry of Local Government.

When contacted for comment by Newsday, the former MP for Harare East referred the publication to Farmtel management. Said Mukupe:

Is there my name on the letters? Just talk to Farmtel, not Mukupe. Speak to the CEO of Farmtel. The guys at Mangwana will direct you to the guys at Farmtel.

The farmers under threat of eviction have offer letters and have reportedly approached the Lands Commission, which has, in turn, summoned Mukupe for a hearing and clarification on the issue.
