The UKAid through the Department for International Development (DFID) funding has deployed 32 social workers to offer counselling services to children affected by Cyclone Idai in Chimanimani.
A statement by the organisation noted:
Social workers have been deployed with Unicef assistance to respond to the protection needs of vulnerable children and affected caregivers including young mothers.
The deployed social workers have supported 2 956 children including 152 children with disability with psychosocial support, bereavement counselling, identification, documentation, tracing and reunification services to separate and unaccompanied children in Chimanimani.
The UKAid is also sensitising chilldren and caregivers on protection from sexual exploitation, abuse and parenting support.
This initiative follows calls by both governmental and non governmental organisations for the need to provide psycho-social services to Cyclone Idai victims.
Alex Gasasira, World Health Organisation country representative argued that the cyclone could have left the survivors traumatised. Gasasira said:
The way the cyclone occurred might have been a very emotional experience for the victims and they will definitely need counselling.
