South Africa-based academic and researcher Pedzisai Ruhanya has said that Nelson Chamisa’s legitimacy as the MDC leader was resolved at the just ended party congress.
Ruhanya also said that the Congress strengthened the party as it reunited a party that was marred by splits and divisions since its formation in 1999.
Speaking to the Daily News, Ruhanya remarked:
The nonsense and hogwash about Chamisa legitimacy has been put to rest by the people in Gweru. The MDC leadership problem was a political rather than legal matter and the people have spoken; the court of public opinion. Who can dispute this MDC team after this congress?
A few days before the congress, the High Court nullified Chamisa’s presidency in the MDC and ordered the convening of an extraordinary congress. It also ordered that the party reverts to 2014 settings where Thokozani Khuphe was elected party vice president.
This ruling sparked lots of controversies as other analysts opined that ZANU PF was behind the ruling as it wanted a split and weak opposition.
Chamisa has appealed the order at the Supreme court thereby nullifying the High court ruling. The Supreme court judgment on the matter is still pending. Meanwhile, Khuphe who has promised to give her all to reclaim the party leadership has since roped in constitutional law expert, professor Lovemore Madhuku to enforce the High Court order.
