The Herald has reported that the leader of the opposition MDC Alliance Nelson Chamisa has fired 145 party employees. The publication further reports that the dismissed workers were recruited by the party’s founding leader Morgan Tsvangirai.
The state-owned paper also reports that the move was motivated by divisions that have grounded the party. It is believed that the workers in question served in the offices of Tsvangirayi and former Secretary General, Douglas Mwonzora.
This comes at a time when Chamisa appointed his national executive committee members last week. Sources to the Herald claimed that party leaders clashed over the election of provincial executive members and the recent selection of national executive council members. There are allegations that there is factionalism within the party.
The allegations are believed to have been confirmed by party insiders who said:
It’s true, roughly 130 to 145 employees were dismissed. The security personnel, directors, coordinators and office orderly seconded by the former prime minister Tsvangirai were fired with immediate effect.
