South Africa’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Bobby Monroe, has denied reports of xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and other African migrants in his country.
Speaking at a joint media briefing with Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Geoffery Onyeama, the high commissioner described the attacks as ‘sporadic acts of violence.
Monroe added that businesses belonging to other South Africans were also affected in the violence.
The violence grounding South Africa has seen several foreign-owned shops and trucks burnt to ashes. Owners were physically assaulted in the streets.
Some videos which circulated on social media today suggested that South Africa nationals intended to attack foreign nationals residing in that country using machetes and knives.
