Unidentified Gunmen Kill Mozambique Poll Observer Ahead Of Elections

Violence has reportedly erupted in Mozambique ahead of the Southern African country’s general elections slated for the 15th of this month.

Reports suggest that a Mozambique poll observer was gunned down in the ruling Frelimo party stronghold on Monday by unidentified gunmen fired several shots at the head of a local election observer mission, Anastacio Matavele.

Zim Morning Post reports that Matavele was shot as he was driving away from a workshop in Xai-Xai, the capital of the southeastern Gaza province.

The developments take place when Zimbabwe’s Minister of Defence, Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri is heading the SADC Observer Mission mandated to make sure Mozambique runs elections as per SADC guidelines.

There are four candidates vying for the president post in an election that will, for the first time in history, elect provincial governors.
