Doctors Stand Firm On Interbank Indexed Allowances

The Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association (ZHDA) has commended efforts that the government is making to resolve issues affecting health workers.

In a statement on Monday morning, ZHDA secretary-general Tawanda Zvakada, however, reiterated doctors’ demand to have their call allowances indexed to the prevailing interbank rate. Said Zvakada:

We acknowledge the attempts by our government so far in trying to address the genuine pleas raised by our doctors.

… We maintain our demand for having our on-call allowance reviewed at the prevailing inter-bank rate of that month.

Doctors have been on strike for over a month now citing incapacitation. The government has responded by awarding them a “paltry” 60 per cent which they rejected as insignificant.

Meanwhile, President Emmerson Mnangagwa has threatened the doctors with unspecified action, accusing some them of being influenced by external forces to destabilise the country’s health sector.
