The Deputy Minister of Energy and Power Development Magna Mudyiwa said her ministry has issued a directive to all government departments to switch off all lights after work as a measure to save electricity.
Responding to a question by Zanu-PF proportional representative member Nyarai Tsuura who wanted to know the government’s policy regarding switching off of lights at Government offices, Mudyiwa said:
… my Ministry has since written to all Ministries emphasising on the need to save energy and switching off the lights after hours.
The directive comes at a time when the country is in the throes of debilitating powers cuts that at times run up to 18 hours a day.
Zimbabwe is currently generating far much less electricity than it needs due to low water levels at Kariba Hydro Power Station and constant breakdowns at the Hwange Thermal Power Station.
