Zimbabwe Moving Backwards On Political Reforms - Britain

British ambassador to Zimbabwe Melanie Robinson on Monday met Vice President Constantino Chiwenga where she expressed concern over some regressive steps that the government of Zimbabwe has made in the implementation of political reforms.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Robinson revealed that she had exhorted Chiwenga to take corrective steps. She said:

I did express concerns about some of the backward steps that we have seen on reforms in the last two years and asked him to see what action he can do on that.

Following the disputed 2018 elections and protests that erupted in Harare before the results were announced, the government deployed soldiers resulting in the death of seven protestors.

Further, in January this year at least 17 people were shot dead during protests countrywide that had been triggered by a fuel price hike.

Since then, a number of human rights and trade union leaders have been abducted and brutally assaulted by suspected State security agents.
