"We're Getting Near Freedom," Chamisa

Opposition MDC leader Nelson Chamisa has set an ultimatum of five months within which Zimbabwe must address the political crisis which his party says is the cause of the socio-economic crisis in the country.

Addressing party supporters at Chisamba grounds in Mutare recently, Chamisa said his party was giving dialogue a chance hoping that the ruling ZANU PF will agree to it or the MDC would take other options. He added:

We are getting near freedom, we are near Canaan. We have only five months to finish the issue of politics in the country. We need 2020 (next year) to clear political challenges we are facing as a country. We can’t be a country that is in a perennial election mode.

His remarks came after the ZANU PF’s 18th Annual People’s Conference at which president Emmerson Mnangagwa expressed the will to have a dialogue with all stakeholders, but not outside POLAD which the MDC rejected.

There has been a standoff between ZANU PF and MDC since last year’s elections which the MDC says were rigged to put Mnangagwa in power. Analysts claim that the impasse has immensely contributed to the socio-economic crisis in the country.
