Schools Are Not Allowed To Increase Fees Without Govt Approval - Coventry

The acting Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Kirsty Coventry on Friday said schools are not allowed to increase fees by more than 20 per cent without government approval.

Coventry further directed schools not to levy fees in any currency other than the Zimbabwean dollar. She said:

Schools that need to increase fees and levies need to submit the applications to the secretary of Primary and Secondary Education for approval.

We don’t want schools that are going to be making huge profits, they are there to provide education. Payment of fees and levies shall be made in Zimbabwean dollars.

For the avoidance of doubt, requests by schools for payments in specific currency are not acceptable.

She also said no child should be denied education on account of outstanding fees and school heads are not allowed to withhold exam results for pupils whose parents or guardians have fees arrears.

Timeous release of results will enable the learner to proceed with their education without hindrance, Coventry said.
