Zimbabwe has been told to clean its diamonds or totally lose its diamond market share to synthetic diamonds if environmental and human rights issues are not addressed, the Daily News reports.
This was said by Zimbabwe Environmental Lawyers Association (ZELA) official Shamiso Mtisi who said;
Due to the emergency of synthetic diamonds, natural diamonds are slowly losing market share as they are associated with wars, child labour, environmental harm, and human rights violations.
This means countries like Zimbabwe may lose out if we don’t clean up our diamonds and adopt responsible sourcing measures like carrying out human rights related impact assessment and environmental reservation principles which resonate with the consumer of this day.
America banned Zimbabwe diamonds on American markets this year due to alleged unethical practices at diamond mines.
