"That, Of Course, We Frown Upon," As Subsidised Mealie Meal Is Hoarded And Sold Abroad

Finance Minister, Professor Mthuli Ncube has claimed that there are some individuals who are buying the subsidised mealie meal in the country and selling it at a higher price abroad.

New Ziana reports that the Minister observed that commodity which was being sold at a subsidised price of $50 per 10kg is finding its way across the borders. Ncube said:

I am aware some people are buying it at $50 and selling it across borders and making a margin by selling at a higher price.

That, of course, we frown upon, it is not something that we welcome and it should stop.

The revelation comes when Zimbabwe is importing maize from other countries including Tanzania to contain a severe food shortage which is said to have come as a result of the ElNino induced drought, Cyclone Idai and mismanagement of the country’s resources.

The United Nations reported that Zimbabwe needs food and handouts from sympathisers have already started coming in amidst reports that 2020 might also have little rains, a scenario that can also prolong famine in the country.
