ZINASU Vows To To React To 'Declaration Of War' By Govt

The Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU) said that it will push the government to reduce tuition fees at tertiary institutions which were recently hiked to astronomical levels.

Speaking during an interview with NewZimbabwe.com soon after handing over a petition to Higher and Tertiary Education Minister Amon Murwira’s offices on Thursday, ZINASU president Takudzwa Ngadziore said:

We are here to make it very clear to the Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education that the students are coming for him, he has declared war upon the students and they (students) will react.

Where there is injustice, the students will stand for themselves and what we want is education for all because it is not only for the privileged according to section 75 of our own 2013 amendment in the constitution.

ZINASU bemoaned the fees hikes effected at a time when most workers, especially those in the public service, are earning less than $1 500 per month.

Earlier this month, Minister Murwira said universities are not allowed to charge tuition fees exceeding $5 000 per semester.

Murwira also assured tertiary students that the government has set aside $90 million for student loans.
