At this year’s New Zealand’s Race Unity Aotearoa speech awards which happened in Auckland on Saturday, Takunda Muzondiwa spoke about being an immigrant from Zimbabwe, the power of language, and tells the story of how a man who sat behind her on the train had the audacity to touch her hair without asking.
The year 13 Mount Albert Grammar School student spoke about struggling to stay connected to her home in Zimbabwe while trying to create a new home in Aotearoa.
In her speech ‘Yesterday I was Africa, Today I’m Lost’, Takunda spoke about how blacks and other minority groups are forced by society to embrace white supremacy at the expense of their own cultural values.
