Gokwe Nembudziya legislator Justice Mayor Wadyajena has urged fellow MPs to help the country prepare to fight the pandemic that has infected 8 people in Zimbabwe and claimed the life of Zororo Makamba by forgoing their salaries and allowances for one month, Newsday reports.
Said Wadyajena:
This pandemic may wipe us all out if we don’t wake up. Our country is ill-prepared to fight COVID-19, much like the rest of the world.
If we truly represent the people, every single MP, permanent secretary and senior government official must sacrifice a one-off salary and allowance donation to the fund
The idea was reportedly well-received by other legislators like MDC’s Douglas Mwonzora who said it should be implemented immediately. MPs earn a basic salary of about $10 000 a month plus allowances according to the publication.
