ZBC Fails To Broadcast President Mnangagwa's Independence Speech

Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) faced a number of hurdles when it tried to broadcast President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s prerecorded independence speech thereby reviving calls for the licencing more “capable” Television Stations.

The broadcast was characterised by interruptions and cuts and other challenges and was eventually cancelled.

The speech comes when Zimbabwe has attained 40 years after independence, a milestone which some say is hollow as the hope that was heralded by independence is long gone.

They say that the country is now worse off compared to what it was at independence while a few individuals, mainly political elites are leading lavish lifestyles.

They also attribute the deteriorating state of affairs to the ruling ZANU PF which they say has, since the era of former President Robert Mugabe, plundered the country’s resources.

During the speech, the president paid tribute to “gallant sons and daughters” who fought in the armed struggle which brought independence.

He also said that Zimbabwe must enhance production for the economy to tick. He also took the opportunity to thank stakeholders, individuals, organisations and countries that are assisting Zimbabwe fight the novel coronavirus pandemic.
