President Emmerson Mnangagwa has relaxed lockdown regulations on a number of sectors to avoid the total collapse of the economy.
The president said that the manufacturing sector must resume “limited” operations with responsible ministries urged to work closely with the Ministry of Health to make sure that there is no transmission of coronavirus.
He made the remarks while addressing the nation on the state of the national lockdown which he extended by two more weeks. The lockdown was due to expire tonight.
Mnangagwa added that this was in light of the importance of the sector to the country’s economy. He also said that essential services will remain allowed during predetermined working hours and places.
He also said that the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development was allowed to resume or scale up operations adding that workers should be tested and screened for coronavirus ahead of this expected development.
The workers had, for the duration of the lockdown, been confined to their workplaces.
Agriculture and security sectors also remain allowed to operate as they provide “essential services” to the nation, Mnangagwa said.
