"We Celebrate Africa Day By Being Proud Of Our African Roots," - Venezuela

The Venezuelan Embassy in South Africa has said that Venezuelans celebrate Africa Day by being proud of their African roots.

Africa Day is an annual commemoration for the formation of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), a precursor to the African Union (AU), that was founded on 25 May 1963. Posting on Twitter, the Embassy said:

In Venezuela, we celebrate #AfricaDay by being proud of our African roots. We reflect on the historic struggles of our African brothers & sisters. The unity of the African Continent is the future of the Global South. #StrongerTogether@DIRCO_ZA⁩ ⁦⁩ #AfricaDay2020

The official estimate of Venezuelan citizens with “pure” Afro-Venezuelan ancestry is 10 to 12 percent of the total population which constitutes about 1.8 million to 2 million.

Sixty percent of all Venezuelans, however, claim some African blood, and Afro-Venezuelan culture is acknowledged as an important component of national identity.
