Former Malawi President Accuses Govt Of 'Importing' Dead Bodies To Boost COVID-19 Numbers

Malawi’s former President, Joyce Banda, has accused the government of Peter Mutharika of bloating COVID-19 figures and abusing resources of the pandemic in the country.

Banda accused the government of importing a dead body from South Africa to increase the number of COVID-19 deaths to receive more donor funding as a well as to scare citizens ahead of a presidential election rerun. She said:

They have imported a dead body from South Africa to increase the number of Covid-19 deaths in the country so that people will be scared ahead of the fresh presidential elections.

… The way the government is abusing Covid-19 funds from the donor community is disheartening as much is being spent on allowances than for the intended purposes.

Banda made the remarks while speaking at a Tonse Alliance mega rally in Blantyre on Monday.

Malawi has 101 coronavirus cases, including 37 recoveries and 4 deaths.

According to Minister of Health Jappie Mhango, 13 of the cases are Malawians who returned from Zimbabwe and were tested at Mwanza border and two are truck drivers.

The other three cases have been recorded in Karonga, Blantyre and Nsanje.
