Protestors on Saturday clashed with the police in the United Kingdom after about 1000 counter-demonstrators to the Black Lives Matter campaign also took to London’s streets vowing to protect historic monuments that have been targeted in recent days.
Statues of historical figures including Winston Churchill – Britain’s World War Two leader whom demonstrators call a racist – have been boarded up to avoid becoming flashpoints.
Demonstrations have been taking place around the world following the death of African-American man George Floyd in Minneapolis after a white policeman knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes.
Police had urged Black Lives Matter protestors not to enter into the streets after the counter-demonstrators had encamped around areas where protests were expected, the advice was ignored.
Police have imposed route restrictions on both groups and said rallies must end by 5 pm.
