Zimbabwe Yet To Reach Peak Of The Coronavirus Outbreak

Zimbabwe is yet to reach the peak of the coronavirus outbreak as it has not recorded many local transmission cases, an official has said.

Lead Epidemiology Surveillance Operations Covid-19 Response and Deputy Director Epidemiology and Disease Control in the Ministry of Health and Child Care Dr Isaac Phiri, however, said Zimbabwe can avoid experiencing many local transmission cases as measures have been put in place to curb that. He said:

Zimbabwe is yet to reach the peak of the outbreak as we do not have many local transmission cases. Once we start to record more local transmission cases then it will be possible to know the peak.

We are hoping we don’t reach that stage where we have many local transmission cases as we have instituted measures so far to curb that which include the quarantining of returnees, increased testing of these returnees, contact tracing of those that have been in contact with the known cases and the participation of the whole of Government in the response.

The country’s cumulative COVID-19 cases rose to 567 after six (6) more people tested positive for the virus on the 27th of June 2020.

All the six news cases were returnees from South Africa. Returnees from across the Limpopo have so far accounted for over 70 per cent of Zimbabwe’s coronavirus cases.
