Senate Blocks Khupe From Firing MDC Alliance Senator

MDC Alliance senator for Matabeleland North Phyllis Ndhlovu will continue to carry out her duties despite her recall by the MDC-T led by Thokozani Khupe, deputy president of the Senate Mike Nyambuya has said.

This comes after High Court Judge Justice Joseph Martin Mafusire recently barred MDC-T from recalling MDC Alliance legislators until their court application, at the Supreme Court, contesting the party’s right to recall them has been determined.

Nyambuya said Ndhlovu will continue to carry out her duties as the recall matter is before the Supreme Court. He said:

On June 30, 2020, Parliament was notified by the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T) party that the Hon. Sen. Phyllis Ndhlovu for Matabeleland North province among others had ceased to be a member of the MDC-T party and therefore no longer represented the interests of the party in Parliament with effect from 30th June 2020.

However, in a letter of the same date, the MDC-T party informed Parliament that due to litigation in the Supreme Court, Hon. Phyllis Ndhlovu had not ceased to be a Member of the party; hence she remains a Senator for the Matabeleland North Province.

Khupe has been expelling from Parliament legislators who were voted into office on the back of MDC Alliance president Nelson Chamisa’s popularity.

Khupe and her allies have taken advantage of a Supreme Court ruling which nullified Chamisa’s election as the MDC-T president in 2018 by the party’s National Council.

She lost dismally in the 2018 elections but has been firing Chamisa’s allies who beat her party’s candidates following the controversial ruling.
